So the issue boils down to balance, right?
I mean - there is a reason in so many cultures in the world balance is a virtue.
To see what I mean maybe it's easier to apply it to all stakeholders involved.
The nutty guy in the e-mail:
Has an unbalanced view of how personally to take something that an artist provides on the internet. So unbalanced, that loses the ability to realize holy shit, I can make my own forum... which he totally could have but now he's a douche bag in our eyes so... too late?
However, you probably wouldn't want your entire fan base full of the casual office-space-esque robots filled with 'safe' attitudes.
The balance is probably a mature fan who cares about the work, maybe connects with some or all of it personally but then draws a line when it comes to things like 'omfg the rez is my best friend!'
The band, devs, moderators:
Are, in my eyes (biased as they are cause shit, I'm posting here), attempting to create a centralized place for fans to come together. By providing things like the google earth scavenger hunt, these forums, the freakin photoblog itself, its clear they are interested in interfacing with fans directly. But there is obviously the desire to not have fans cross the proverbial line.
Ok, so those two are pretty cliche. I think its most interesting when we view the idea of balance from our own perspective (IE the 'normal people' fans?)
So, us:
This may not be what you expect, but I kind of thing we're out of whack ourselves. Some of the fanboyism in response to the crazy e mail is a bit over the top, don't you think? It's not that I don't agree that wolfy went overboard... but we can't just react to it by saying 'ban the dude and screw the nuts'. I think having a discussion about what creates the over the top attitudes in the first place may be in order.
Anyways, I was kind of afraid this would come across as an unorganized rant but have done my best to keep it short-ish (I write code for a living, so I'm a shitty writer). I hope I didn't offend anyone and I have the utmost respect for what is being attempted with this community. I just think in any society, critical thinking of what creates the things we don't like is pretty important - not only banishment of those things.
