That's a nice attitude by Trent. I understand the explanantion though I am not a native speaker.
Thanks for the investment of time, attention and respect for the fans in this text.

I completely understand where you are coming from and why Trent, my only concern is that there IS something you can do...if you know the prices for your concerts are outrageous, then make the show that much better for the fans. A good example of this is when I went to LITS I paid a total of $60 for really great seats and it was the most awesome show I have ever seen (been going to shows since 1984 when my mom took me at age 10 to see Twisted Sister, over 200 concerts). The only comparison to that show was the White Zombie Astro-Creep show. Now, in your recent blogs and current festival videos, it shows a really stripped down show without much visual effects. This is fine for a $25-30 ticket in my book. But the ticket prices I am seeing for these shows are in the $75 for ok and $150 for good seats. All I am asking is....put on a show that reflects the ticket price or fans will feel a bit snubbed. Imagine what it is like to tell a good friend whom has never seen NIN all about LITS, convince them to pay in excess of $75 a ticket and then go and see a show that is basically a larger version of one of your club tour shows. Just because you have "gotten into bed" with livenation or whomever doesn't mean that you have to let them fuck you or your fans. No means NO! smiling bouncing smiley NIN has been my favorite all time band since Broken came out. I own almost everything NIN and have seen you 6 times, going on 7 coming May 8th. This is the most I will have ever paid for, not only yours, but anyones concert ticket. And if the show is hot...then it will be money well spent. LITS it up for us.

So, a show isn't good unless it comes with a ton of bells and whistles? Bullshit. I actually feel better about paying more to see a stripped down show, because for me it's about the energy of the music and not the flashing fucking lights.

Thanks TR for being one of the very few artists out there being vocal on this issue, but one thing in this post did worry me...

My guess as to what will eventually happen if / when Live Nation and TicketMaster merges is that they'll move to an auction or market-based pricing scheme - which will simply mean it will cost a lot more to get a good seat for a hot show.

Well thats no friggin bueno...
It's no secret that the music industry has taken a shit, but to see live music do the same is truly disheartening.

LITS was once in a lifetime. Not every show needs bells and whistles. I'm there to see NIN. Not the lights. The LITS visuals were just EXTRA icing on the cake.

and today, march 15th, will also be known as 'INTERNATIONAL THANK TRENT REZNOR DAY', seems fucked up that venues are charging exorbitant prices that go against what the artist actually would prefer,...there has to be a way, somehow, for this greedy policy to change,...the root of all evil is money,...self promotion??? boycott ( after the nin/ja tour, of course!!!) a free uhm, "woodstock,2010 @ the indpls motor speedway" oh, speaking of, they snagged 3doors down for carb day concert, that SUCKS!!! anyways, right on trent, and yeah, thanks for the insight w/the low-down on the capitalistic nature of the aforementioned agencies and their uhm, "representatives",...

Fascinating post and explanation, it's an issue that also pisses me off to. Unfortunately here in the UK ticket sales tend to be through the aforementioned Ticketmaster/LiveNation. The only other sites to get any major pre-sales are See Tickets and Gigsandtours.com who are essentially owned by the same people. As I recall your last UK tour pre-sales were through Gigsandtours.com so i'm really hoping that if you do make it back to the UK this year (for a headlining indoor tour), then you'll go through these guys again. TBH, they are far from great and frequently charge high handling fees but they still pale in comparison with the likes of Ticketmaster.

03/15/09 3:10 PM

I can't believe how much you guys are doing to help out the fans on this one, much appreciated dude.

Also thanks for the explanation, most people wouldn't take the time to paint everyone a picture of the bullshit that goes on

it amazes me how they can get away with these schemes for so long

03/15/09 3:11 PM

The business tactics in the US need to be revamped but there really is nothing we can do unless the whole system is torn down and then rebuilt. It is too bad that the people who go to the concerts are the ones who have to be toyed with but it is very rightous for the NIN and JA tour to try to cut the fans a break by offering pre-sales.

I so agree with you. The lights/screens/effects.. etc.. ADD to the show, not make it. I'd be just as happy seeing Trent sitting on a stool singing..than having tons and tons of lights, screens, fire, etc etc..

Goes without saying.. but I'm going to say it anyways.. You obviously Can't please everyone!!

The greed and corruption that occurs never ends. It is truly sickening. Time and time again people break the law to make a few extra bucks. Greedy fucking assholes. That's why someone like TR sticks out for me. He is someone with a conscience. Which isn't meant so much as a pat on the back, because people should have a conscience. People should give a shit. Which is why I'm also a fan of him as a person. I would never want to meet most celebrities. But Trent doesn't play that game. And it feels that there's no solution to this shit, just thank god at least someone out there is thoughtful enough to also be concerned about this.

LITS was amazing, but the quality of a concert should be decided by the music, not the light show. If NIN sucked musically LITS wouldn't have been half as entertaining as it was. Your going to get to see a more diverse set list, a more musically dynamic show, and an re-energized Trent (who is clearly going to love this tour)...how could that be bad?

Hey guys! I hope everyone has already thought of this, but it'd be kind of fun to make the scalpers cry by:
1. Buying as many tickets as you can... all of you.
2. Selling them at face value! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
3. ?
4. Profit!

03/15/09 3:53 PM

Well you know I'm gonna read the whole thing cause it's like one of the FAKING TOMES I would have written on the blog, and sometimes still do here. * grinning smiley

"The venue, the promoter, the ticketing agency and often the artist camp (artist, management and agent) take tickets from the pool of available seats and feed them directly to the re-seller..."." AHHHHH ISN'T THAT INTERESTING????

"TicketMaster even bought a re-seller site and often bounces you over to that site to buy tickets (TicketsNow.com)!" SON OF A BITCH!

"I'm the one busting my ass up there every night. The conclusion really came down to it not feeling like the right thing to do - simple as that." (YOU CHOSE WISELY REZNOR-SAN)

Sounds like the entire music industry as a whole (aside from the artists and their work) just FAKIN SUCKS. Period. I don't know how you guys stick with it as long as you do...You must REALLY love your work and feel it's a battle worth fighting.

And BTW You're FAR from boring. You actually come off as a very intelligent, genuinely nice, good hearted, somewhat down to earth caring musican/man/human being. There are worse things to be so SUCK IT UP BUCKO! (Sorry I'm in a CRANKY MOOOOOOD!) tongue sticking out smiley

*see other comment (BTW I also enjoyed the use of the word PLETHORA. It's a word that should be used more often in the English Language IMHO.

We thank you for that. Judging by what has been posted in the forums regarding presales in the past that percentage certainly doesn't feel enough for most venues. Not to sound ungrateful but any chance it can be increased to say 20%? I think that would take care of most hardcore fans...the poor ones at least.
In the current NINJA tour, does JA get 10% also?

Could you be a little clearer about you tour? Is that all of the US dates you plan to go to? If it is then I will have to travel but I don't want to buy a ticket for a date further away and then you add US dates closer to me soon. Please let us know Trent.

03/15/09 5:01 PM

When I first heard about this tour, I was incredibly excited—NIN & Janes Addiction is an amazing line-up. However, my excitement was premature, and as I slowly began to hear about the ticket levels and pricing, my heart sank. There’s just no way I can justify spending $150 per ticket right now with this economy and so much employment uncertainty. This will be the first NIN tour I will not only pass on purchasing tickets for multiple shows, but pass on tickets period.

Now, I know I could always opt for the lower price levels and bite the bullet for at least one show, but I have always enjoyed the experience that comes with seeing NIN live and up-close. For any other band, taking a backseat in the nosebleeds would be fine—being up close and seeing everything clearly with my own eyes and not on a gigantic screen is acceptable because I just don’t have as much personally invested in those bands. That’s not the case with NIN. I have been listening to NIN since I was 13, making them the one band that I have personally & continuously followed from youth through adulthood, and if I am going to watch NIN on a TV screen, I might as well watch it at home, on my TV, in my PJs with a bucket of M&Ms balanced on my belly.

We’ve all been hearing about the economy for some time, and I imagine there are many people who still see and hear the stories from some kind of distant impersonal and unaffected place. However, that’s not the case on my end. I work in the manufacturing/global import sector and the effects were immediate and dramatic. Every week, people are laid off at my corporation, and every day I go into work wondering if I am going to go home without a job and the ability to support myself. The only bright spot at work is that I work in Marketing and that is one job that is becoming more essential as the fight for every sale becomes imperative. That said, there’s still no guarantees, and there’s always that chance that my pink slip may be next. Two tickets at $150 apiece is the equivalent to 1/3 of my rent, and a week & a half less stress should I no longer have an incoming salary.

I understand that two headlining bands equals a higher ticket price, and under normal circumstances, it would be incredibly worth it. I just hate that there couldn’t be one lower flat price across the board available on a first come first-served basis during this period in the nation’s economy. I don’t believe for one second that there aren’t quite a few would-be concert-goers in the same boat as me, who are forced to make the hard choice of just saying no for this go-around. The situation with the ticket-scalpers just gives the slap a little bit more bite than normal.

I’m not upset with NIN or JA about the ticket prices, as I very much understand that they should feel free to establish their hard-earned value on the concert market. They are both acts that deserve the higher ticket price. Today’s my 30th birthday, and I am just a little bit down and felt the need to express my frustration about the overall situation, my personal circumstances and all its subsequent disappointments. I was excited about the tour, but now that it is out of my reach, it’s just one more crushing letdown on top of an already depressing situation.

At the end of the day, it is what it is, and I’ll just have to live with it.
