When I first heard about this tour, I was incredibly excited—NIN & Janes Addiction is an amazing line-up. However, my excitement was premature, and as I slowly began to hear about the ticket levels and pricing, my heart sank. There’s just no way I can justify spending $150 per ticket right now with this economy and so much employment uncertainty. This will be the first NIN tour I will not only pass on purchasing tickets for multiple shows, but pass on tickets period.
Now, I know I could always opt for the lower price levels and bite the bullet for at least one show, but I have always enjoyed the experience that comes with seeing NIN live and up-close. For any other band, taking a backseat in the nosebleeds would be fine—being up close and seeing everything clearly with my own eyes and not on a gigantic screen is acceptable because I just don’t have as much personally invested in those bands. That’s not the case with NIN. I have been listening to NIN since I was 13, making them the one band that I have personally & continuously followed from youth through adulthood, and if I am going to watch NIN on a TV screen, I might as well watch it at home, on my TV, in my PJs with a bucket of M&Ms balanced on my belly.
We’ve all been hearing about the economy for some time, and I imagine there are many people who still see and hear the stories from some kind of distant impersonal and unaffected place. However, that’s not the case on my end. I work in the manufacturing/global import sector and the effects were immediate and dramatic. Every week, people are laid off at my corporation, and every day I go into work wondering if I am going to go home without a job and the ability to support myself. The only bright spot at work is that I work in Marketing and that is one job that is becoming more essential as the fight for every sale becomes imperative. That said, there’s still no guarantees, and there’s always that chance that my pink slip may be next. Two tickets at $150 apiece is the equivalent to 1/3 of my rent, and a week & a half less stress should I no longer have an incoming salary.
I understand that two headlining bands equals a higher ticket price, and under normal circumstances, it would be incredibly worth it. I just hate that there couldn’t be one lower flat price across the board available on a first come first-served basis during this period in the nation’s economy. I don’t believe for one second that there aren’t quite a few would-be concert-goers in the same boat as me, who are forced to make the hard choice of just saying no for this go-around. The situation with the ticket-scalpers just gives the slap a little bit more bite than normal.
I’m not upset with NIN or JA about the ticket prices, as I very much understand that they should feel free to establish their hard-earned value on the concert market. They are both acts that deserve the higher ticket price. Today’s my 30th birthday, and I am just a little bit down and felt the need to express my frustration about the overall situation, my personal circumstances and all its subsequent disappointments. I was excited about the tour, but now that it is out of my reach, it’s just one more crushing letdown on top of an already depressing situation.
At the end of the day, it is what it is, and I’ll just have to live with it.
