I'm guessing this is a NO, but could I please get some clarification?

I'm a professional photographer. I've bought a ticket, and will be attending the show. If I get a photo that I feel would work well in my portfolio, may I use it for that? These photos would not be sold or given to clients; they would merely be a show piece. Again, I'm expecting the answer to be no, but I'd like to double check. Thanks!

And where are my manners? Thank you so much for working out such an incredibly fan-friendly policy! I'm looking forward to being able to experience, in some capacity, the songs that will inevitably played at shows other than the ones I can attend.

trent_reznor says
"Audio and video recorded at NIN/JA shows is for personal use only, and cannot under any circumstances be sold or used for profit in any way."

I'm assuming this is what you are looking for. Images will fall under the same rules, I'm sure.

Ok .. here's a tricky one ... Trent ....

If I brought a relatively small laptop (like 8-12" screen) .... rested it on my lap w/ lid down ... connected a basic video cam and mic ... could I broadcast a live feed to ... oh lets say my own personal web site and allow users to access for free ...

Or provide a live audio stream to the world free of charge??

I consider my portable laptop to be my camera and audio recording device ... will I be denied? Because this would be fucking cool. I could upload to youtube 5 minz after a melody ... broadcast live feeds ... provide live photos ... ohh I could pimp

P.S. broadcast via 3G internet stick - no microwaves or satellite dishes

I think common sense would say no.

To Trent and the rest of the NIN contingent...

The way you're turning the music/concert industry on its ass is both exciting and inspiring... as well as extremely smart... you all will certainly come out on top in the end and become more of a blueprint than you already are.

All the bullshit fans of music go through... from the skimming of prime seats off the top straight to secondary markets... to exorbitant ticket prices piled with service and convenience fees... to all the continuing stupidity of RIAA actions... and now those internet sheriff assholes covered in the latest Rolling Stone that your management spoke out against... what a myopic viewpoint so many of your peers hold...

I'm driving from Chicago to Noblesville to see NIN/JA in ALL its glory... and it's going to be such a god-damned pleasure to just walk straight through the turnstyles with my camera in hand instead of shoving my camera body down my pants, forcing my buddy to shove my 200mm lens down his and then sweating out the fear of confiscation for the whole show... have I ever sold any of the pictures I've taken? Nope, never once... just want a high quality memento in our digital age to share with my friends and the NIN/JA community... Thanks for being prescient enough to know the value in that. Thanks for the wisdom in crowd-sourcing pretty much the entirety of NIN.com... a bottomless well of cool shit to see...

I will support you until the bitter end brothers... financially and otherwise... Rock on.

Thank you Trent! I'm on the lawn for the Irvine show, now Trent has forced me to get a zoom lens for my DSLR Canon XSi. Well whats another $600+ on a lens for this show..hehe!

This is by far the coolest things a band has allowed their fans to do!! My G1 will shoot great audio and video of the event and i can twitpic and qik it from the venue shortly after the show! (Who twitters during a show anyway?) Just hope some A-Hole doesn't decide to ruin the experience by trying to think he's shooting an official NIN concert DVD/BD. Although the fan generated LITS show using Trent's source material have been amazing so I am glad his fans get to record and ultimatly make dvd images and compete openly for the top download spot. :-)

Oh hell yes! This is the best news yet out of the NIN camp, and that's after four glorious years of pretty much nothing but great news.

Well, okay, I guess perhaps this doesn't actually trump all the fantastic music that's been released, but still. ROCK ON.

(Edit: Oh, and THANKS!)

Thanks, Trent. That's awesome.

What if it's you I want to make out with? Because, damn, you're the sex.

I met you at the Jesus & Mary Chain and the Peter Murphy tour, by the way.
1990 was a good year.

I've been listening to you since you were just on college radio...

With regard to European Shows:

Most festivals provide information on what you can and can't take to the festival area.
from www.hurricande.de posted:
Taking pictures for privat use is permitted. Professional audio- and videorecording equipment is not allowed on the festival ground. Any abuse will be prosecuted.

I'm going there with a few friends. Since it only mentions "pictures" I'm going to ask about handheld audio recorders and hand-held cameras which are not "Professional", since I want to record sound while my friends videos the gig.

Roskilde allows you specifically to only take still pictures and Arvika festival simply mentions that video is forbidden... Not very detailed info I'm afraid.

So when in doubt, contact local management and ask!

And if they refer you to their website - which doesn't really say anything, tell them that NIN has a more clear policy on recording than any venue ever. Which is kinda weird, as the venues enforce the rules, so they should also clarify them...

Oh, and I used to work with Robin at the Masquerade.

In an effort to allow you to document your experience at the upcoming NIN/JA performances, we will be relaxing our photo/video policy (5/7/09 - 6/12/09 only).

Hey Trent,

that's really fine for all americans. Really.
And I understand that festivals are out of this policy as you mentioned on the front page. I go in concert on 6/29/09 in Dusseldorf / Germany and want to record your performances with a hand held camera as your policy it defines.

Do you allow us something similar? Or are there laws (probably to much laws?) which don't allow anything in Europe?

Best regards from Germany

Will they being pissed, when one is partying at the show and destroys their picture because of jumping and dancing etc. accidentally before their lenses? Is it even allowed to party at the show or must we stand still that all people with photohandys, cams and recorder can do their records?

Will do. However, what about the non-festival shows such as the one in Amsterdamn?
