NIN iPhone app rejection

As much fun as it is to discuss the merits of Apple vs their competitors, I can't help but wonder if the rejection is just the result of one Apple employee applying a standard a little more strictly than another Apple employee might.

The fact that they can't get the rejection reviewed and reversed more quickly than this certainly indicates that they aren't as friendly and responsive as they'd like us to believe, but the "core" (ha..I'm funny) of the issue might just be an employee having an off day.

Wow. I don't have an iPhone, and yet I spent an hour or so reading through some of this thread. Very interesting reading. Chances are this will be cleared up on Monday when the approval monkeys are back to work.

In the meantime, how is the tour (that has zero dates that I can attend) going?

05/03/09 10:39 PM

The other part of this is just stupid retarded business practices. The one thing that this app has been doing is moving itouches and iphones. Everyone has been ranting about how they have to get an iphone/itouch for *this* app.

Why the hell they don't just do expedited processing for apps as an additional fee is beyond me. Pay an extra oh I don't know 500 bucks you get bumped up the line. Just dumb.

Everyone - let me be clear. I love Apple products and as goofy and out-of-touch as their app approval process / policy is, I will still use them because they work 1000X better than the competition. This is not a debate, it's a fact. The iPhone is THE most elegant, modern smartphone at this point in time and it's perfect for what we want to do with the NIN app - except for the ludicrous approval process, and that's what I want to draw attention to.
Android is cool, but nobody has an Android phone. Blackberry is OK but the hardware is inconsistent and WinMo straight-up sucks balls. If Apple doesn't get it together, we will most certainly make it available to the jailbreak community. I didn't invest in this app to see it languish on the sidelines from an idiotic policy while this tour is in full swing.

I wholly agree. Linux is cool, too. LOL, but there aren't as many decent applications for production work. Although, it is getting better.

On the jailbreaking note, I would get it in a heartbeat, especially considering mine is already jailbroken, and it's very nice.

This isn't an Android versus Iphone thread but if it's so good how come I have never even fucking heard of it until now?

I don't consider myself someone who lives under a rock i am quite an informed person so....shitty promotion or what?

This is like the stupid Gizmondo thing that came out awhile ago trying to be the next PSP and tanked horribly.

Trent in all seriousness---if you hate Axl so much (which I agree with) WHY OPEN UP FOR HIM in 1991 in Europe for a few shows???? I mean at least Kurt openly REJECTED the offer to play with GNR...And when Faith No More opened for them, at least Mike Patton would talk shit about Axl ON STAGE...So why open up for someone you do not respect????

That's why you've shouldn't count on an iPhone App only, Apple are so fucked up in that manner.. it's ain't something new!

I know I'm obviously biased, but Android is a more viable platform. For instance, most iPhone people don't know this, but 3rd party apps cannot run in the background. Android allows for apps to run on startup and stay on. Push notifications, live alerts, and more. Your app could run in the background and notifications can be sent based on GPS, time, and other factors.

Just because there is only 1 handset in the US today with Android, doesn't mean it is not worth looking into. With nearly a dozen models due by end of the year, many are forecasting for Android to outpace iPhone in next 2-3 years. Many handsets, many carriers.

No stupid vetting process. No hypocritical gatekeepers. More functional software.

- AndroidGuys.com

*ahem*

For starters, the battery life on an iPhone isn't exactly the greatest, and it already has more than enough daemons running in the background, along with its bootloader and various other inner-workings. That is why there has been a big push for Apple to move the iPhone OS into push notification, which will decrease battery usage, and background processes would be a little more lenient on the battery.

Android looks great on paper, but will it live up to expectations? Only if it's on phones that can match the iPhone in usability AND looks, and I don't see that happening any time soon.
Android has around the same web browsing market share as the iPhone did at the same stage in its life. T-Mobile has a much smaller footprint and subscriber base than AT&T with most of the country in a slower, 2G network. Aside from that, there are 1 million sold in first six month. Many call the device clunky and unsexy. Not too shabby.

I personally see many press releases and developers saying how much more functional Android is with always on features. Android is not going after the iPhone. It's going after everybody else. Think 'Windows' for PC and MAC. Sure, one is sexier and has a dedicated following, the other is downright everywhere.

At some point, AT&T, Verizon, and all the others will have various Android handsets that outnumber Apple.

I'm not saying switch from iPhone and go Android only. I am only throwing out the idea that Android needs to be seriously considered for a more funtional nin: access app

thumbs up to MojoFilter for the Pimp Hand pic. Very good. I'm glad Apple's tedious approval process has been brought to our attention as consumers. It is silly. I don't understand why there are all the double standards between genres of music and formats (film vs. music). Hopefully, like most things Mr. Reznor posts, this will open some eyes out there so change can become a possibility.

So Trent vents some frustration at Apple, and all of a sudden 90% of the NIN community has always hated Apple and their products. Just reading over the responses in this thread really demonstrates why (i think) Trent posts so rarely here - people seem incapable of thinking for themselves.

There have already been calls to spam apple customer service, as well as a facebook group devoted to hating apple for this 'outrage'.

I obviously can't speak on behalf of Trent, but i have to say all the sudden knee-jerk reactions to everything he says, which seem to define a large chunk of the community here, cant be doing him nor NIN.com any favours.

Sounds like an idea is forming... I'm sure your tech team could get a set up a small Debain system and open something up. repo.nin.com does have a nice ring to it. If the EFF manages to get apple beat in their DMCA whine session, app sig checking could be a thing of the past (although I am sure they will try to tighten their grips)

Remember when Trent found out the outrageous prices being charged in Australia for Year Zero and he said onstage "fuck it, just steal it"?

I think that might have to apply here.

The idea of getting Spam for double penetration videos does seem appealing, though.

Remove all references to "TDS", but see if you can slip in some hidden Bukkake content past Apple.

In fact, start ratcheting up the level of true obscenity to ludicrous proportions, getting filthier with each re-submission. Shit, if they're going to block the app, you might as well give them a good reason.

They'll be begging for the original app with "TDS" intact in no time.

I'm reminded of that bonus feature in Fight Club where they discuss how the censors had a fit with that line Marla says while in bed with Tyler "I haven't been fucked like that since gradeschool". So when the censors made them change it, the new line she said was "I want to have your abortion" and the censors begged them to change it back to the original tongue sticking out smiley

Jesus fucking christ, shut the fuck up about your endless throbbing hard-on for Kurt already. No one gives a shit whether or not he was a mediocre-at-best musician or the channeled spirit of Bach. Just shut the hell up about it.

You're wholly incapable of realising that it was simply an example to draw parallels with a current situation. You don't need to go on some holy crusade-of-shitty-grunge to defend the band against all slights. There was no deeper meaning to it than simply pointing out a similar circumstance in years gone.

Apple's app approval process have clearly fucked up in this case, and that's what's the matter at hand. Not whether or not Kurt's music simultaneously gave free blowjobs and flipped off MTV with each listening, but the fact that the NIN App got rejected on completely hypocritical and incomprehensibly stupid grounds - something that should not be the case. The fact that the band/developers of the app keep us in the loop is fantastic and all you're going to achieve with your theradshitting is to drive them away, due to having to deal with an excess of bumbling retarded fans simply to get through to the decent ones.

Yeah I find that a bit funny too. I've been using the same iMac since 2004, I love Apple products. But I'm not going to change my entire opinion based on something somebody else said. My theory is that since people know Trent may possibly be reading the thread, they just try to look as good as possible for him. However, they go into extremes which just results in hilarity, arguments and sometimes creepiness. People need to realize that Trent most likely doesn't care if they share his exact views or not lol.

tell me more about the fucking hot asian teen girls thing???

and why diss NIRVANA???? Nirvana never changed words to their albums for wal mart--they only changed the title for rape me and the back cover artwork for in utero and that was Cobain's call

excerpt from the book Kurt Cobain's Last Days Detailed by Manager Danny Goldberg

When 'In Utero' was about to come out, Geffen heard that Wal-Mart would not carry the album unless a different album cover was chosen, because the original included pictures of fetuses. Kurt had designed the artwork, and I assumed he would resist any pressure to change it.

I reassured Kurt that the band was coming off a number-one album and that he could hold firm. Nirvana fans, I assured him, would find the album elsewhere. Kurt calmly but firmly interrupted me and said in his earnest slacker monotone, "Of course I want our records in Wal-Mart. When I was a kid, the only place near where we lived to buy records was a Wal-Mart. One of the reasons I make records is for kids like me." He had no problem creating an alternative cover in order to reach Wal-Mart shoppers.

That is part of what made Kurt so genuinely cool. He was always a scruffy, small northwestern town stoner punk rock kid at heart. He just happened to make music that lots of people wanted to listen to. But he never lost touch with that grass roots feel. He would obsess over things like "what would I want to hear in a song. what would make me want to buy a record." He detested playing arena shows because of the lack of connection with the fans. I saw an interview with him where he said something along the lines of "I never really know what to do with arena shows, you know? I grew up in a small town, and even by the time I went to Seattle all the bands I liked were playing in tiny bars where everyone knew each other. I think the only arena show I ever went to was AC/DC and I mean that was cool, but I can't see us doing that. So here we are with 10,000 people wanting to see us and we're kind of stumbling around on stage trying to look cool because it's so foreign to us, you know?"

Should it really surprise people that hardcore NIN fans would also be hardcore Nirvana fans? Honestly.

This is a by-product of the 90s, really, when if you liked x band you had to hate another band. Like if you liked NIN but listened to Bush you were a fucking leper. Or if you liked Soundgarden but also listened to Stone Temple Pilots it was a sin.

Or let's hit closer to home. Circa 1999 you either liked NIN or Manson, not both.

I think it's really a huge pile of bullshit. Sure, there are bands that honestly do suck, but a lot of people have very eclectic tastes in music and I think one of the most unfortunate things about the 90s, considering all the unbelievably awesome music going on at the time, was the general aura of animosity between similar sounding bands.

You also have to remember though that from the viewpoints of the artists themselves, it was like a 90210 episode. Trent and Manson had some sort of falling out that. Courtney Love did a bunch of stuff to irk other musicians. Axl Rose pissed people off to the point where no one wanted to work with him. Scott Weiland and Layne Stayley got to the point where they had to cancel sets mid concert because they were so haggard.

I'm just rambling but my point is that some of these bands made really awesome music that people overlooked because of this general sense that you had to pick and choose your camps and battles.

05/03/09 11:29 PM

typically speaking, causing chaos won't solve anything... apple isn't going to read through 9 pages of pissed of people

why doesn't someone or everyone draw up some professional letters directly to apple? Power in numbers.
