Seriously. How can TR have money from selling his own stuff to the same fans that knows what he is selling for a long time? It doesn't make sense to me: make a deal with IndieClick to sell NIN things on NIN boards.

Bring on the porn ads! All those NIN logos are head-aching me.

im guessing what we are seeing are the templates for future ads, just to check out the layout of the site and to test the waters with regards to how us users feel about them.

cant say i have a problem with ads at all, its just pop-ups that bug me.

I've been amazed the site ran ad-free up until now and champion this move toward sustainability. (And I might be in the minority here, but I like all the NIN-branded ads. Makes them feel less intrusive and more a part of the site background.) Here's hoping the concept works out as well as is hoped!

05/20/09 1:14 PM

Keep the site free! Ads are not a big deal, as they have infiltrated many other sites that were once ad free. I wonder thoug, are we seeing NIN related ads only right now to prepare us for the onslaught of other ads? Or can Nin.com actually make money advertising NiN related stuff? If so, how does that work?

I think there will be other ads, but I'm sure it will be more of a matter of Trent turning companies down rather than the other way around.

IMO the top advertising is ok, but the lateral ad it's a little bit annoying, and it cause some errors like this [at least with Mozilla Firefox]

Seriously, I don't care about ads. Put as many ads as you feel necessary. Totse.com had a shit ton of ads to keep itself alive (among other things). So do what you have to do. I firmly believe that a lot more people than most are willing to admit will NOT care about the ads. Just as long as you keep doing what you're doing!!

05/21/09 8:28 AM

Will there be titties?

05/21/09 9:31 AM

Sure, that's understandable.

Now, it would be nice if the ads were for regular, fair, maybe even useful companies worth being advertised. Or companies and things that interest the NINers, as suggested before. I don't know whether that's possible in real life but it would really bugger me to see, say, ads for debt collectors on this site. Well, I'm pretty sure the NIN staff will be cautious about it.

Another idea: probably some of the members have businesses themselves or provide professional services. Why not get them to advertise on this site? Then, depending on how big their business is, they could have a big ad or a small ad, or an ad for 2 days or for 2 months. Something like this. I am a freelancer and, although I'm not interested in advertising anywhere and never did, I would use this opportunity to get some visibility while supporting NIN at the same time.

I'm in the camp of not minding ads if it keeps the site free and the development of future NIN stuff on track, but the popup or rollover ads are really annoying, especially when the close button is sneakily hidden so you have to look all over the screen for that little 'x', or you move your mouse accidentally over something and get an advert taking over the screen.

05/21/09 11:24 AM

Just to FURTHER support NIN - I disabled my AdBlock in firefox for nin.com. Anything to keep the lights on for one of my favorite bands.

ad sales generate revenue to cover production costs for pretty much EVERY media we encounter in the world. its amazing how long this site has been ad free. I support whatever is necessary to get the job done.

05/22/09 9:23 PM

20k a month???? i make that in a YEAR!!!! you sure do spend a lot of money on NIN & NIN fans.

THANK YOU!

Thank you for being honest with your fans. Its seems to be rare these days. Do what you must to keep this community afloat.

I like this idea, whether it's feasible or not, who knows but I do like it. Larger question, lol, what would you be willing to pay?

05/24/09 5:39 AM

I'm so used to ad's, I feel uneasy on sites without them.

Scary.

05/24/09 8:35 AM

i love these ads! everything's just for nin!

05/24/09 3:47 PM

Ads! WTF! FU Trent!

Nah, I'm just messing with you. It's a smart decision and just for you I'll turn off my Ad Blocker on nin.com.

05/25/09 12:23 AM

Dude! I love the way you offer us an explanation, even though you don't have to. It's your site. Do what you will with it. You don't owe us a darn thing.
Thanks for the consideration.

I highly support the notion of a donate button somewhere on the site. Just some sort of easy way to throw a few dollars towards supporting the site. Sure, not everyone will use it, but the option to do so would be nice.

No every asshole troll out there won't contribute a cent but will make the site less enjoyable as per usual for the more dedicated (and willing to donate) fans.
I paid for the Spiral and would have continued to, but this place, this place is full of fucking whiny assholes.

I'm going to derail for a moment. Please prey tell what makes one fan more dedicated than another? I mean honestly what's the list of requirements? If it's pay more money than other fans, well that's not dedicated it just means you're willing to spend more. If it means that you own every single album, that either means you're OCD, or willing to support the band. I'm a black/death metal fan, and I see this shit all the time: what's a "true" metal fan?

Here's the deal if you like the music, you buy some merch/albums because you like it, and further you don't spend your entire time being a complete asshole arguing the minutiae of why various versions of songs live are superior and why setlists should be organized to your exacting liking, then you're a dedicated fan.

If you were a member of the spiral you were part of a paid site that is now shuttered. There is no more spiral hence spiral v nin.com discussions are a waste of space and time.

Finally, if you have nothing to contribute to this thread other than "this place is full of fucking whiny assholes" take your mind numbing bullshit to another thread.

t's all good Trent...thanks for never compromising your art and for always thinking of us, your fans. your music is the shit and you are unique in that you remain detached from the industry. thank you for not conforming !!! perhaps you shouldn't feel the need to defend the ads sir, anyone that complains should be shot !!! no other artist has gone so many extra miles for their fans, I admire you and you should be very proud indeed of all you've accomplised...

No you missed my point (huge surprise). The fans I am referring to are the ones who sweep in with 4 posts to make idiotic comments or inquiries, don't "get" the forum banter or don't have anything to contribute to the "community" etc. Dropping in to talk some shit and then taking off-this type of fan is not going to contribute $ to the board. There is also an excessive number of people who argue about NOTHING here with as many people as possible. There is a lack of useful moderation, several mods seem to be deeply embroiled in the same useless arguments as in the aforementioned sentence. I would not be interested in paying for THIS specific board as it is right now.
In terms of how big a fan someone is vs. another-I couldn't give a fuck. The examples you have given don't mean anything in terms of what I am talking about. People who argue about what makes a "bigger fan" are pathetic wankers. It doesn't matter.
Yeah unfortunately the Spiral is no more, which is too bad since it was infinitely more fun than nin.com. My comments are also completely relevant since the topic has to do with support for this website since NIN obviously wants a free forum (for obvious reasons) they will have to find a way to generate revenue to make it self sustaining. There is no such thing as "free". As such I obviously have no problem with NIN covering this place with advertisements.

You have provided a perfect example of the overly confrontational assholes who now spoil the board for other people.

Oh and it's pray tell not prey. Clever use of sarcasm FAIL moron.

Did that too! The ads look sleek and cool right now. I hope the sleekness doesn't drop too low when external ads start showing up.
