Before long, you will start to see some limited advertisements on nin.com in the forums area. This is an experiment to help sustain the development of nin.com technologies into the indefinite future. I know ads suck, but after much debate and thinking it through we're willing to see how it goes and how intrusive it is to the nin.com experience.
My mission is to continue developing nin.com and related mobile apps way past the point we are now and the reality of that is it costs money. Currently we're spending 10-20K / month on bandwidth / R&D outside of any specialized projects (mobile apps) and the possibility exists for the site to become self-sustaining through this process. Which means: more social / media integration and overall cool stuff for you for free moving into the future, for the price of seeing some ads. We'll play this one by ear and see how it goes and I appreciate your understanding of the situation.

Eh...ok.

05/14/09 10:24 AM

I've been amazed and appreciative of the way you've embraced a wide range of technologies to enhance the whole nin experience for your fans. I'm sure we won't be disappointed about decisions you need to make to keep things viable. thumbs up

We trust your judgement,as always.

05/14/09 10:29 AM

i had no idea it cost that much to keep a place like this running. do whatever you need to keep it free for all the fans and less of a strain on you.

05/14/09 10:30 AM

Sounds like it's a good idea in the long run.

05/14/09 10:31 AM

What kind of ads?

05/14/09 10:34 AM

With all the free stuff we get from TR and nin.com,
We really cant and shouldn't bitch about having to look at a few ugly adds.
Seriously people we cant expect to get all this stuff for free and just have TR flip the bill.

Thanks Trent as always!

05/14/09 10:37 AM

I would suggest TR having a paypal account so NIN fans can donate to the site. BUT we see how well that all worked with Niggy Tardust.
Only a hand full of us payed the $5.

Actually TR i know you probably dont want to do this and have thought about it already. But What if the free accounts had ads and then some members can pay like $10 or however much would work to avoid seeing the ads?

I know id be willing to pay for an AD free NIN.com

Just food for thought

Holy crap! Really?! I had no idea it was costing you that much.

For all the months I've used this site for free, thank you - thank you VERY, VERY much.

Another smarty pants, I was just thinking that- most high-traffic sites offer this.

Also, this thread still has potential to remain civil.

Whatever keeps this place going. Some of us practically live in here...

05/14/09 11:00 AM

Wow! I didn't even know that you were payin' that much. Thank You! Do whatever you need to do. thumbs up

05/14/09 12:02 PM

Small price to pay to keep this up and running...this site has been taking over all my free time lately and I can't believe how much it costs to run it. Thanks for everything!!

I like that idea, too.

05/14/09 11:08 AM

Wow, this site really costs a fuckload! You do what you need to do with it thumbs up

Ads are a normal part of most websites anyway, I'm sure most of us know how to navigate around them, and understand the fact that a website (especially of this magnitude) won't sustain itself for free. I can't see how anyone could possibly have a problem with that.

Can't wait to see what you guys do with the development of the site. Should be interesting smiling smiley

05/14/09 11:09 AM

Whatever it takes to keep this boat afloat.

05/14/09 12:10 PM

It makes sense to try to have the site self sustaining (depending on how much revenue is pulled on advertising spots) than to have it as a constant drain.

Think guys, that's more $$ that will probably go to the other projects we're all looking forward to.

Seeing as this site is free, there's really not a whole lot of room for complaint. Constructive criticism? Probably. Whole hearted asshat parade? No.

05/14/09 11:13 AM

^I haven't read any complaints on here yet. Unless that is just a preemptive response.

If I may spread my two cents: now this sounds pretty solid indeed, and I'm not sure on the tech part itself... but shouldn't browser add-ons be considered? Firefox for instance has an ad blocker/filter, which (when turned on) filters pretty much all the ads. I have my doubts if people would still pay those $10 instead of simply downloading a free add-on (I too am keeping the Niggy Tardust example in mind).

Buuuut as I'm no expert, I'm sure I've overlooked a thing or two. Don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong. Be as it may, I'm highly thankful for this website and the R&D being done, so some ads definitely won't hold me back. Do what needs to be done. thumbs up

More preemptive than anything.

I highly support the notion of a donate button somewhere on the site. Just some sort of easy way to throw a few dollars towards supporting the site. Sure, not everyone will use it, but the option to do so would be nice.

05/14/09 1:43 PM

smiling smiley Good Luck... and the ads thingy... it makes perfect senz... SOME WILL STILL FIND A WAY TO BITCH ABOUT THIS TOO..... But -cool- and awesomeeee!

05/14/09 1:25 PM

Wow, I had no idea what it cost to run this either (didn't try to guess...).
Certain ads > dead community. smiling smiley We've been a bit worried about it. I too would like to a) thank you soooooooooo much for doing all this and to b) hump the donate button idea's leg.

Hey, whatever it takes to keep it rolling! cool smiley I very much appreciate the effort you put into nin.com and mobile apps. It's nice to have a community formed around a common interest that actually works and is NOT a hot mess. smileys with beer Thank you for everything you do for us!

05/14/09 4:22 PM

No problem.

05/14/09 5:41 PM

That's a lot of money, holy shit. Bring on the ads Trent!

edit:

I'm willing to pay for a membership for the site (or atleast have an option for a paid membership) I was a spiral member and had no problem putting out the cash.
