I think this is a really great thing that you guys are doing, and I hope Eric gets his heart. My dad's a doctor, and I explained the situation to him, and he said that unfortunately, with the way everything is set up with insurance - and with the Medicare/Medicaid rules - that the best bet the kid has is to raise the money to just pay for the entire transplant himself. He says it's wrong, but that's how the system is set up.
Nimue35 posted: The status of the American health care system is a pet peeve of mine that I rant about regularly. When will the government understand that a for-profit health care system is a direct conflict of interest to the health of a patient?
My father has been supporting serious health care reform for years: he thinks the insurance companies and drug companies are money siphoning murderers and that too many doctors do unnecessary procedures on people
with paying insurance just to make easy money. He thinks the reforms Obama's administration is trying to get through will greatly help. But he says that unfortunately, when we do get reform, that people like Eric - who have very serious and risky illnesses - will actually be
harder to help. He says that they will be even
stricter about who they give help to, and that transplants will more often end up going to people who are less risky because of how expensive the procedures are. So I then asked him, "but if they stop pushing to help the harder cases or doing difficult, risky, but innovative treatments, won't we fall behind with what we can achieve with medicine?" And he said, "you're exactly right. But unfortunately, I'm not the one that gets to make those decisions."
BTW....remember to go to Veronica's site [
www.veronicadelacruzonline.com] and send an e-letter to Senator Harry Reid of Nevada asking for help on Eric's behalf!

She has the contact information and a cut-and-paste letter.
