If they were never meant to be meeting the band anyway, then Trent wouldn't have to spend all day meeting and greeting them; he'd only have to meet the donors, which he's going to be doing anyway. Is it because they're going to be a waste of space, or will they get in the way or something? This is what's confusing me.

because that is what it means when there arent 150 donors. You can get into the technicalities of it all you want, i dont blame these people for being let down, hell most of them had probably allready bought tickets and donated some amount to boot.

First of all, these winners were told they would have backstage passes and tickets. This was something they were excited to win and should in fact received. Secondly, it is remarkable for Trent, NIN, SSSC and now JA to do this for Eric. However, let's face it...many NIN fans would have paid that price and more for the simple fact of meeting TR and NIN. They were not paying the price to help Eric. They were paying it to meet TR/NIN and (maybe) getting backstage with the bonus of helping a human being. If they were in fact doing it purely out of the kindness of their hearts these fans would have merely donated the money wanting nothing in return. Thirdly to some, fifty dollars is as hard to come up with as one thousand.

Lastly I would again like to say, that this was indeed a kind act Trent acted upon. However, there are thousands upon thousands of people in dire circumstances such as Eric. His story was luckily well publicizied due to his sisters occupation. Many cannot publicize their delimas and many any need help. I hope some will look in their own community and help in any way they can.

I know many will crucify me for this post. Trent is human. Sometimes humans make mistakes and relize it in hindsight.

Damn. I wish I had seen this post by you instead of what I already quoted.

AS PREVIOUSLY POINTED OUT IN THIS THREAD - NO ONE WAS EVER TOLD THEY'D MEET THE BAND!!!!

Now, on to business... you can NEVER prove who is sincere about their donations. However, lumping everyone together about the donation being for selfish purposes is AGAIN.. what kids... ANOTHER ASSUMPTION! People will believe and think what they will, but it's really annoying. I don't understand why some can't see the overall picture or at least try, and not just ASSUME donator's have all this money floating around or that ALL donator's did it just to see Trent for 5 minutes.

Your point on the publicity for Eric is not just for Eric. He happens to be the example of what does occur with thousands just like him. The charity was not done only to save one life, but to also bring awareness to the problems with healthcare and to get people to think about it and stand up to do something about it.

I truly need to stay out of this thread. haha Some of you guys are seriously moronic and simply do NOT get what others are saying. I want to shake the piss out of some of you so you'll get it. haaha :p

As a winner myself, I am dumbfounded that anyone would complain. The show in T.O. WAS AMAZING. Yes, don't get me wrong, it would have been amazing to meet T.R. & co. But the word disapointment does not fit in with this at all- You are in the process of trying to SAVE A LIFE and make radical changes to a fucked up system!!! Our seats were incredible, the show, was beyond anything I can describe, and then to top it off, it was FREE!!.

Thank you so much Trent & co. The tickets are more than enough, and the pass we received makes for an amazing memento. I don't think its possible for NIN to disappoint!

Actually, the site does say the bands will play (and in what order, and some posts have said approx what times).. nice try though. Seriously, the pass doesn't mean "you're their new best friend" it just means "you can get backstage."

Where? the tour site: ninja2009.com just says "Three bands, one show. Touring North America this summer." could be interpretive dance................

It sure must leave at least a bit of a bitter taste in Trent's mouth at the end of the tour...giving away FREE tickets and those people bitching about it. SURE, when you have your heart set on meeting what I assume to be your favorite band like NIN and other things come up and you can't (not to say that won't happen for sure - like cozbysweater getting the opportunity to meet them regardless) - that is a bit of a bummer, but at the end of the day you HAVE to be grateful for getting tickets like that! (not like he'll read this...) but I hope Trent doesn't harbor any bitter taste to the fans as a whole over a few bad apples. It's a shame that person/those people won tickets that most of us would be over the moon to receive...

06/04/09 6:02 PM

I don't think anyone is bitching about getting free concert tickets. Goodness you people are strange.

I think it's really selfish of the winners to say that it was a rip-off.

a) Trent didn't HAVE to offer up free tickets/passes... he did it out of kindness.

b) There was no charge! You got free fucking tickets! Hence, not a rip-off!!!

c) So what! You didn't get to hang out with Reznor... just be grateful that your asses got to go in w/out forking over any money.

*** a real fan would have been grateful for the experience... so, stop getting your panties all twisted.

Yet you take the time to post that. Trent started something no one else was doing way back when. But you wouldn't had been around to experience that since your comment sounds like something a 15 year old would write.

Everything evolves.

As a winner for an upcoming show, I am disappointed that we won't get to go backstage, but not for the reasons talked about here.

Since I had tickets, my first thought had nothing to do with passes, but instead that I could invite the close friend that introduced me to Nine Inch Nails music at a concert in San Francisco in 1991. He paid for the tickets then and I could finally repay the favor. The bonus was that his son who is in the Army just returned from overseas and could also come to the show. We have so much to celebrate and be thankful for and like most things, it is all a matter of perspective.

I would have been excited and happy with the same experience heyericgrant hated. After going to concerts for the last 35 years I have never been backstage and looked forward to the experience. Since I didn't expect to meet anyone with the passes, we took the opportunity to contribute to Eric and attend the meet and greet. I will admit that I am true geek, so the trip backstage would be about seeing how the show gets put together. A small disappointment at best.

Bottom line, it will be a fantastic night with people I care about that was made possible by a twitter contest. Amazing. Now I need to figure out how to get my pass before the meet and greet so that I can turn it into a true memento and get it signed. That would be great.

If you're a musician, you're bound to have to make decisions that are going to piss some fans off. In this case Trent did just that, but there's no reason to hold a grudge with him. He did what he had to do. I understand were the Twitter winners are pissed off but hey, get on with life. Be grateful for the free tix and enjoy the show.

06/04/09 6:56 PM

Trent, i wanted to thank you for a kickass show last night in MA. I wasn't able to donate, and I didn't win free passes, I was a presale buyer, and admittedly jealous of the donors getting to go in and see you, while i waited in line with the other presalers. But they paid a lot of money for a great cause, and they deserved it.
I waited 27 years to be able to afford (being poor really sucks..lol), and to make Nine Inch Nails my first concert ever, and you made it worth every minute and every dollar. THANK YOU.

people who complain about their FREE tickets and passes, don't even deserve to attend in the first place, and should thank their lucky stars that you don't tell them so yourself. shame on anyone who makes a person regret being kind. thats half of whats wrong with this world these days, people getting shitted on for kindness and eventually giving up being kind and ending up like the jerks who ruined it for them.

thank you again for an incredible show, and best wishes for your happiness

I wonder if any of the people who complain have ever had the pleasure of having fans. There is no way to please everyone, none. The thing everyone tends to forget unless they've been there is that beyond the lights, beyond the music, beyond everything else that goes along with it, there is a person...not a god, not infallible. So Trent gets angry? So he's disappointed that some people are ruthless?

Come on...he's a human being...just like all of us...just like those who are disappointed that they don't get to meet him, just like those who do.

And Trent, you know that the price one pays for fame is sometimes a horrible price. Hang in there. There are those of us in the world who appreciate the sacrifices you make to bring us your music and who are more than happy to be satisfied with nothing more than that. What you are doing for Eric is a wonderful thing...take solace in the fact that once the dust has settled, in the end there is something going on here that is bigger than all of this...something that you saw as a need unfulfilled and used what you had available to help along.
well said. that's a damn fine first post.

There is no way for him to please everyone, especially self-absorbed fans who expect him to base his life around them. (I'm referring to some, not all.) But the fact that he tries, communicates directly with fans, gives away albums, etc. says an awful lot about someone who really owes us nothing. No wonder he's walking away after. It has to be exhausting. Whether he's gone temporarily or permanently, he deserves to do what makes him happy, be in love, get married, have kids if that's his thing, and have a life outside NIN. I hope he does and that he loves and enjoys every minute of it.

06/04/09 7:13 PM

What does Trent being in love have to do with this? Past that, I can understand why people would be upset by this. I'll come right out and say I don't think it's right and had I been a winner, I would be very disappointed. Also, I realize I am powerless to change it, and atleast there is a given reason for this change. Does anyone really believe that every single person posting "I'd be fine with that" would really be completely fine with it if they had been affected directly by this? I don't blame anyone for being upset with this situation, although immature flaming isn't the way to deal with it. If you must make your discontent known, a calm, well thought response would probably warrant much more respect than a flame about "what a douchebag Trent is." I also don't think that a disappointed winner that hasn't caused a stir should fall into the "self serving asshole" catagory either. I'm well aware I'm not the most friendly or most mature person to ever exist, but think about what you're saying. I click the preview button before I post sometimes to see if I should rewrite something I wrote in the "heat of the moment" and would be better said another way. Maybe that would help someone here too, it works for me.

Directly to Trent, about your use of "endless disappointment", I can't exactly disagree with you on that. I can say being a fan over time has lead to a few disappointments (like the Ghosts video festival) but it has had some very good times (May 4th 2005 will always be a good memory). The next time you are working on something for the community to enjoy collectively, plan for a million people to want in on it and see if it is still practical or needs some adjustment. I truely admire your connection to us and you never mean to disappoint a deserving fan. You're still only one person with limitations no matter how good the intentions.

The only technicality is that people are making assumptions. And that really boils down to stupidity on their part....then they have the audacity to pitch a little hissy fit when it's really their fault for being disappointed.

Many people posted their experiences...which varied. Advice was also posted.

06/04/09 7:30 PM

also a technicality: that "backstage passes" wont get you backstage, but they will have the words on them, so technically they are getting "backstage passes". along with the free ticket and tickets they probably allready had bought from the presale.

Anyway, it shouldnt be enough to completely ruin anyones experience. But i understand if somebody feels let down.

edit: its a little like winning 100 grand and then giving someone a 100 grand candy bar. But hey...things happen...
