oh hai Trent

[idprotect.verisign.com] add support to the site for this. The mobile code is free, and is tied to a single cell number. Otherwise you can blow like 30 bucks and get a keychain that does that

And presto you have verified accounts.

The other key fobs are $$$ but I think the most expensive one is like 50 bucks, and it's credit card sized.

Trolls don't spend money on small shit like this to verify themselves *as* "verified" account. After that "filter by verified" becomes a search option when cruising through the boards.

[idprotect.verisign.com] pricing.

I'm thinking somehow that this could be tied into twitter somehow, like off of this site, something like having your twitter account linked from the profile, and generating a custom rss feed based off of that to see @trent_reznor @nin blah blah responses. Whitelist by design. I also could be highly full of shit.

...and corrected for grammar. Somewhere enoch and fuli are going "wtf Jarrett. stop suggesting shit".

ROFL!! Trent has released the hounds!!!

(Use of the term "hounds" is not meant as a dig at the mods, by the way. You guys know I think you're awesome, right?)

I agree with you. It is pretty pathetic that people have nothing better to do
with their lives than bash someone who has opened his life to us all. To live
vicariously through someone can be a bit much for some, but to be jealous of
them to a point where they become obssesive and almost assenine is insane. Trent
don't sweat it,be happy of everything you have done and will do. Rember there are
still people out there who appreciate you. ---}---@

Unfortunately they really need to do the verification thing the other way around... We need to verify every user... Having to log a CC or Paypal might be a way to do it but that the obviously knocks out most under 18's(which could be a good thing??)

At the end of the day no matter how thick your skin is there is only so many replys to your tweets/pm's etc that you can take before it all just gets too much...

I think it's pretty universal that people either have cell phones or a credit card or both. A hybrid approach would work. Just using anything reliable to flag an account as "verified". You also don't want to leave the under 18's out of the game.

I agree with this. Most people are trying to claim that TR was only targeting a specific group of people, but the only hurt and discouraged people I have encountered are genuine, kind fans. His rant was perfectly fine besides the approach he took depicting the Metal Sludge users. These people that fuck with TR are ugly, but he went a little further than saying just that. He has to understand that 99% of people reading his post are his fans, and I am willing to assume that a decent amount of those fans may have fit TR's physical description of these Metal Sludge users. He should have never mentioned physical appearances in the first place--like something is wrong if a girl is plump or unattractive. Now those girls (who are self conscious to begin with) feel like they are being targeted when the real assholes might not even be getting the message.

Trent's a good guy, I know this, but he totally did not think that post through. Most of it makes perfect sense and is hilarious, etc. but the wrist-cutting comment and judgments of physical appearance did more damage than good in my opinion.

**Check: Just read his second post clearing it up. Helps me get where he was coming from, but I can't help but think he made a bit of a mistake either way. It just comes off wrong, and most people will not have noticed that he reposted his clarification. I was just a bit discouraged when he blatantly said that to the world, but I know he was angry, etc, and I was not there, so I cannot make much of a judgment. I am sure it was for good reason.

I often find myself hating people for certain undesirable traits. It is so easy to let that small group of individuals discourage you. They're the Rush Limbaugh's of everyday life, for every day situations and circumstances.

These are the people that are always there to drag you down because they themselves either envy you to an extreme degree or just really have nothing better to do than to bitch to an audience. Take the audience away and they have no power.

Realizing that people like this have always and will always exist. In no way am I trying to sound preachy. This is common sense and all of you know this. It just helps to put the obvious into words sometimes because it is the obvious that can often be forgotten.

As someone on this post said before, do what YOU love. Do what drives YOU. When it comes down to it, your happiness as an individual is all that matters in this small window of time that we have. Those that matter will always be there, those that aren't there or exist as a negative entity will simply be forgotten.

For a moment there (with the last Trent post, which is awesome and I wish I had that much power over dumbassery) I thought this was going to get better...but I realized how quickly I failed in noticing how this thread is getting weaker and weaker by the moment. I think it may be time. We need that big ass red fail stamp.

I'm sad that some people decided to be hateful. I've enjoyed your time on twitter, and thought your posting about your girl one of the most adorable things I would see on twitter. I'm sorry that some people had to ruin it for you and will miss your presence and the sense of connectedness that twitter brings between an artist and their fans.

And I'm glad you've grown and changed and are happy with that, it's a good thing to get away from stagnation. Stagnation inhibits creativity, and why would any of us want that?

That URL didn't did resolve for me, the problem with rep systems is that they're fairly easy to game. You grab a group of people, tell them "go rate this guy a 0" out of a possible 5. And the system is gamed. Then there's a rep war, people moderating this or that person down or up or their posts up or down. You can throw all that algorithms at whatever you want, but this is one of the easiest ones to game.

"Cooperative Peer Groups in NICE"

Abstract
"We present a distributed scheme for trust inference in peer-to-peer networks. Our work is in the context of the NICE system, which is a platform for implementing cooperative applications over the Internet. We describe a technique for efciently storing user reputation information in a completely decentralized manner, and show how this information can be used to efciently identify noncooperative users in NICE.We present a simulation-based study of our algorithms, in which we show our scheme scales to thousands of users using modest amounts of storage,
processing, and bandwidth at any individual node. Lastly, we show that our scheme is robust and can form cooperative groups in systems where the vast majority of users are malicious."

No, I don't. These systems are non-trivial to implement. I tried implementing something like what I'm suggesting based of Yee's work, and failed fucking miserably. I've just done a fair amount of research into this in the past.

The whole point of brainstorming is to spew out anything for an idea that sounds practicable and then go from there. Look at this and then laugh real hard at how I thought this out. You can see the "oh I have it so right" but it being totally and incredibly wrong.

Trent,

Just do whatever makes you happy. You owe it to yourself. And in the end, you are the ONLY person you owe anything to.
The people who let information about your personal life affect their enjoyment of your music are obviously just a tad maladjusted. How old are they? 5? I can totally see why you have pulled yourself out of the Twitterbin, reading some of the absolute shit that was thrown your way recently.
Personally, even though I think your personal life is none of anyone else's business, it's great to see that you (as it would be with anyone) are so happy right now.
Rock on, Trent and Mariqueen!
Who cares what anyone else thinks!

i signed up and logged in today in the last couple of minutes just so i could reply to this blog.

a lot of musicians are taking the whole "need to please" the audience and fan base. please don't. pleeeeease stop doing that. to please us is to group us, to categorize and stereotype what we must like. i don't like how you have changed because i do like your old ideas of not giving a fuck while giving a fuck about world events. i think people mistake that attitude for being an adolescence but its revolutionary not childish. i think as we get older we shouldn't mature by settling down we should be preparing for sharing wisdom while still being aware. i am disappointed in your new music, but i might just be clumping you guys in with all of the other failed bands that tried to reinvent themselves by pleasing the fans. if your only pleasing the fans then your only concerned about the money. and you can tell. music is supposed to be about expressing through sound. all i hear now is advertisement and bribing to go buy your music. its not only you guys its a lot of bands, but you guys might actually listen, i guess.... i didn't really grow up during your great rain of music but i grew up with my parents who loved your music and i gained respect of your music through there respect.
we are in a recession, so what will the next art movement be like? i hope its not this.
but like i said, or am implying, it shouldn't only be left up to you guys.

best wishes,
izi

Yeah, there are so many possibilities!

The identity verification system on couchsurfing.org requires you to provide your credit card information to prove your name and address. Once the credit card is proven valid with a small charge, a postcard is mailed to your credit card address on record and you have to enter the verification code on line before you are considered identity and address verified. That's just step one. After that is vouching for people you've met face to face on the site (or being vouched for), and a comprehensive rating system for the trustworthiness of individuals. Only people who have been vouched for by three others can then vouch for other individuals. If a person fucks up, it's not only their reputation that's tarnished, but that of any who recommended them... which is a pretty strong incentive to act like an adult.

Any system that requires the real full name and address of its users and holds them publicly accountable for their actions tends to be less troll-filled since it becomes a lot more difficult for them to get away with problem behaviour. In addition, it would make it easy to track down stalkers, harrassers, or get restraining orders if you have the person's verified legal name and address. Anyone who doesn't get verified would simply be permitted to lurk (or there could be some private forums solely for verified users too), and lurkers would not see the full names of the identity-verified people displayed either unless they, too, went through the process.

That plus PM sending limits to official members could go a long way to making a fan site more tolerable, even enjoyable, for the artist involved. Sure, couchsurfing.org that I've referenced isn't a music industry or fan oriented site, but if its system has proven good enough to allow strangers who have never met before to stay with other strangers worldwide in their private homes, safely, it would probably go a long way! smiling smiley

Friends told me about your post. I have to ask: are you serious? "comprehensive rating system for the trustworthiness of individuals" you say? I've read a satire on the Daily Cuntpunch about "the true fans" and this sentence reminded me of it.
Giving away full names, addresses and credit card information? Fuck that! With all the maniacs around? Even I bumped into stalkers/fucknuts and they are annoying as hell. Wouldn't give any of those infos away, just to prevent TR from getting trolled. Is that your suggestion? You can't be fucking serious.

It's an idea, bad or good it's far more than what has been contributed for the last oh 29 pages of shit. Besides, I would make none of this compulsory. It would be absurd to. I can see a verification setup using the verisign stuff I mentioned earlier combined other methods.

The idea being, if you have a verified account (which all I imagine is a green check mark or some shit) it makes my life easier as another fan to go "oh well this person may be a fucktard however, it's not an alt account or some random troll account it's a real person".

You would be surprised what a visual cue of seeing someone going to the effort of being; accountable, real (not a troll, spam or alt account), will do for you. Have the nickname xxSUPERMAN434xx, with the real first name below it.

Trust me if that went compulsory I would dump the site, however, nobody is going to make something like that compulsory.

And further, if you have an idea on how to make the community better (I could give a shit about safe) but just generally better to hang out on, I definitely want to hear it.

Literally, no sarcasm on the "I want to hear it". I've read 29 pages of well, bullshit.
