Trent, you care about people. You aren't afraid to break preconceived notions fans may have had. That, I appreciate. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt. But one of the things that makes this world harsh and even suicidal for so many people is being pre-judged by one's body -- seemingly everywhere one turns -- even when it's a jab aimed at someone specific. So I have to call you out on it, as a considerate friend should.

What we may want think about is that now metalsludge.com is probably getting all kinds of traffic making all kinds of money. Maybe, just maybe we need to quit directing out attention over there instead of making that community stronger. We need to try and inspire positive attention on this site and help to weed out the trolls by ignoring thier dumbassery (yes that is my new word of the day) instead of feeding it and reporting their fuckness to a moderator.

Yeah, there are so many possibilities!

The identity verification system on couchsurfing.org requires you to provide your credit card information to prove your name and address. Once the credit card is proven valid with a small charge, a postcard is mailed to your credit card address on record and you have to enter the verification code on line before you are considered identity and address verified. That's just step one. After that is vouching for people you've met face to face on the site (or being vouched for), and a comprehensive rating system for the trustworthiness of individuals. Only people who have been vouched for by three others can then vouch for other individuals. If a person fucks up, it's not only their reputation that's tarnished, but that of any who recommended them... which is a pretty strong incentive to act like an adult.

Any system that requires the real full name and address of its users and holds them publicly accountable for their actions tends to be less troll-filled since it becomes a lot more difficult for them to get away with problem behaviour. In addition, it would make it easy to track down stalkers, harrassers, or get restraining orders if you have the person's verified legal name and address. Anyone who doesn't get verified would simply be permitted to lurk (or there could be some private forums solely for verified users too), and lurkers would not see the full names of the identity-verified people displayed either unless they, too, went through the process.

That plus PM sending limits to official members could go a long way to making a fan site more tolerable, even enjoyable, for the artist involved. Sure, couchsurfing.org that I've referenced isn't a music industry or fan oriented site, but if its system has proven good enough to allow strangers who have never met before to stay with other strangers worldwide in their private homes, safely, it would probably go a long way!
