Love "A drowning" didn't like the 4th clip so much on the HTDA site, but am really looking forward to this. Anyone have a link to an MP3 version of the 'A Drowning'?

Now that there's one full song I'm going to give MY teenie impression, which is MINE and not Bible and blah blah blah.

I'm not HATING on this in any way. It's a beautiful song, ridiculously beautiful, and made me cry for reasons unknown to me.

Thing is, it confuses me! It feels like Trent. The lyrics could be his. The music, tone, piano, everything is him to me and then... you don't hear him. You hear Q, which sounds so wrong to my senses but SO right in every other way. She fits but after 16 years of HIM my brain doesn't think she should fit. But she fits! I'm left confused.

I think the haters just can't handle the confusion and that's sad. They'll miss out simply because... this is pretty beautiful. Beautiful music is needed in the world. Not everything has to be the raging screams of our dear Trent. He's softer now. Q can voice it for him and she did it well here.

My confusion is my own.

I'm losing hope, sincerely. Once he said Tapeworm was not good enough to be released. Perfect Enemy Vacant is fucking great! What about this new "project"? Is it good enought to be released? Or is he just interested in money to pay his bills?

About halfway through The Drowning, I'm really liking this. Wasn't sure what to think near the beginning, but once the chorus hit it became wonderful. Nice to hear Trent on piano. (assuming that is Trent)

Or maybe he was interested in doing a project with someone he loves.

NO WAI.

So at least now we have the three members confirmed by the pic. (Trent, Atticus and Mariqueen)

But what happened with Tapeworm was that nobody really seemed to be on the same proverbial page. They all had different visions of how to move forward and the result wasn't anything that they felt was truly worth releasing. And it was after Tapeworm fell apart that Trent started with the perceived teasing about what he was up to. That is, drop some vague hints and if it comes together: great. If not: back to the drawing board to try something else.

If Trent felt the exact same way with HTDA, they certainly wouldn't have put up a site or release a complete song for public consumption.

did anyone ACTUALLY expect it to be better than Nine Inch Nails? you're too hopeful. even though there are obvious similarities (electronic beat, piano, dissonance), I think of it as a completely different entity, kinda like what leo's said above. the anticipation was too great.

And yeh I've noticed he's downplaying. sort of (but not as insanely) like Maynard with APC and his wigs. If Trent wore a wig... he'd be kid n play fella!

Constructive criticism is fine. Nothing's perfect. However, saying you're giving up all your old NIN material as a result is just plain- well I don't know what to call that. It'd be an understatement to say that's an overreaction.

I think the term you're looking for is "acting like a drama queen."

And has anyone else noticed that Trent is largely downplaying whatever role he has with the group? He seems to want Q to be the focus and not him. This is largely her project, after all.

Don't worry, there will be some new NIN before the year is done. If Trent had felt that HTDA would have been better as a new NIN EP but with a quest singer, he would have done it that way. But he didn't. He's promoting an artist that he feels has a lot of potential to make a positive impact on the current music scene.
You're forgetting that it's his wife dude.

I dont think she is forgetting anything.

As I have said before - I think it is pretty disrespectful just to assume how much of this work is down to Trent just because he is involved, until we see the credits. He has produced and worked with other atists in the past. That Mariqueen just so happens to be his wife has nothing to do with it in my opinion.

This isnt NIN. Anyone suggesting that they are now going to burn their NIN collection or some such is beyond help.

Ok... this is an honest first impression from a long time NIN fan...

"A Drowning" is nice... pretty... and so... old... it's all rehashed and old sounds... good sounds I guess... but it honestly sounds like a marginally good post from the remix site...

I don't know... I love Trent... and Mariqueen is super sexy... actually, if I were Mariqueen, I'd kinda be pissed that the husband couldn't come up with something more than just old, recycled stuff...

just posting an honest first impression... but if you like it, there is no reason not to enjoy it!

We'll see how it goes. Personally I like it, but don't forget that it's just the first track. Trent gave us Discipline before the rest of The Slip, and I'd say that Discipline is probably my second least favourite track on the album. My point is, let's wait and see what else they have going on for the final product.

05/04/10 1:08 PM

i like it, it's got a Me, I'm Not style beat and some cool piano stuff going on, so it's not so far away from NIN stuff. i quite like her voice, or at least the way it fits the music. this track wouldn't sound right with powerful vocals, imho smiling smiley

I can't get enough of this hating. Give us more contrarianism. It's just so delicious "just like a waterfall I'm drowning in." http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9F9_RUESS2E/S2bmG2hnbEI/AAAAAAAACKc/JVys-KXfuuk/s800/photorealistic-drawings-bic-ballpoint-pen-1.jpg

I am not generally a big fan of the female voice. I don't mind some gutsier female singers: Annie Lennox, Rickie Lee Jones, Patti Smith, Peaches. If there's passion in it, I'll go along for the ride. "A Drowning" isn't doing it for me. I'm not saying it's bad - I'm no judge. I'm just saying that the woman's voice is a barrier for me.

But it's only one song. Maybe there are more sides to this venture. I will give it multiple chances.

I do wish Trent and Mariqueen well with this project. I hope it finds an audience.

I too prefer more passionate, angrier singing, but I also like diversity and variety, and the vocals for A Drowning is the only vocals that suit this downtempo song. maybe with the variety bit, she could have a bit more dynamics...

I do hope Maynard and Trent get together at some point in the next few years and do something.

In fact, I'm kind of thinking--that's kind of what this is, isn't it? Tapeworm was meant to be an outlet where the people collaborating with Trent (at the time, Lohner and Clouser) had more input than they did in the traditional NIN structure. Then Maynard got involved, and it became this weird supergroup thing--but that original idea? That's right here. Notice how Atticus Ross is being presented as a full-blown member of the band (certainly more than Trent is at this point) whereas before he's never been anything more than a guy in the background doing production shit. This is where Ross is allowed more control than he is in NIN's camp, where he's usually acting as a filter to Trent's ideas. And then you throw in the girl to make it sound even differenter.

Why people need to compare everything ? 'it sound like this', 'remind me that', blahblahblah.. music evocates places, times, feelings of their own.. you're probably short minded or unable to ear/see that.

and if you don't like something and you're pissed about it, keep it for yourself. just like people saying 'my five year old kid can draw that' in front of an abstract piece of art. if you're not sensitive to something, just shut the fuck up.
