At first listen, I'm pleasantly surprised by how accessible the full thing is... Not what I expected from the first three tracks.

It all feels very fresh and exciting and new.

06/01/10 4:33 AM

Just listened to it. I won't regret buying it tongue sticking out smiley

1) Fur-lined
2) Parasite
3) The Space in Between
4) The Believers
5) BBB
6) A Drowning

^ My rating

I just wish Trent had a larger vocal-part. Except for Fur-lined and the Space in Between, i don't think his voice would fit there. smiling smiley

Overall, great EP.

Am I the only one that hasn't received my Hi-Def download yet?

No :\. I would whack an email to topspin, see if that helps matters

Still haven't gotten mine either. sad smiley

I think it is brilliant. favourite track is Parasite but i'm in love with every track. i hope we get the multi's for the rest of them.

06/01/10 6:25 AM

Really great EP. It feels subdued but multi-layered. I think I'll have to give it a few more listens to properly absorb it and pick up on all the nuances.

"Parasite" is the stand-out track for me.

06/01/10 6:32 AM

i got my pre-order email for the free MP3 format and got it downloaded last night, so then i wanted to download it again as the "out now" version, but Topspin's sending me the same email as when i pre-ordered, so the "download now" button on the "confirm and download" page sends me "The Believers" MP3 instead of the EP. i'm guessing Topspin'll send the email out when the time comes...

i haven't bought the hi-def upgrade because i'm going to buy the CD later and a friend offered to send me whatever lossless format they download anyway...

Waiting patiently myself smiling smiley I may go take a nap and check later.

Trent must be perusing this forum with a smile, seeing how so many people are REALLY digging it smiling smiley I know I love the two singles, can't wait to hear the rest!

06/01/10 6:35 AM

I am loving the hell out of Parasite, Fur Lined, and BBB. And I already loved The Space in Between, A Drowning, and The Believers...

Can't wait to hear Fur Lined performed live grinning smiley

Problem: Windows not displaying id3 tags in explorer or zune.
Solution: Windows doesn't natively support id3v2.4, convert to id3v2.3 via tag editor, or re-release with id3v2.3 tagging.*

Both Ghosts and Slip were tagged id3v2.3

A bit of a modification... id3 metadata is fine when loaded into iTunes, (and Winamp?). Doesn't show in windows explorer or zune software.

Update: Just tried The Slip and Ghosts 1 as downloads off the site, id3 metadata works in both explorer and zune... so it's specific to the free HTDA EP download.

*This of course is lame as fuck, bug report/feature request @ Microsoft filing time.

I guess this is buggy with iTunes as well (via iTunes support forums)

loaded it again and again into my Creative Zen player and it never showed up there. drove me nuts until I figured that the 1d3 tags are the culprit. had to completely remove them and fill in by hand again with mp3tag to make it work.

That it doesn't sound entirely like rehashed/reworked/ nin demo tracks is a big plus, there is quite a lot of depth & originality here, with a wide array of influences.
smiling smiley
Will definitely be buying a copy of the CD when it's released.

Enjoying listening to the EP for the 5th time straight through, I agree with Acharis, a lot of depth and originality! Unexpected and very very cool. Can't wait to get the full album, and will be first in line to order the EP in physical format.

06/01/10 7:35 AM

This. Blew. My. Mind.
The end.

06/01/10 8:57 AM

Got my HDA in hi-def ultra-realism.

Digging it a lot. This will give me something to listen to (once or twice through) on my plane home from New Orleans.

PS: Is that the same drum machine from "Only" on "Fur Lined"? That snare sounds very very familiar...

As someone that loves Niggy Tardust I'm not surprised at how much I'm loving this EP. I found BBB, The Believers and Parasite highly addictive and satisfying from the get-go, and the other songs will undoubtedly grow on me just as much. Very impressed!

THANK-YOU TRENT, MARIQUEEN, ATTICUS and ALAN !!!!!!

06/01/10 8:09 AM

pretty fun experiement - this feels lacking though - surprised too - because i loved niggy tardust. i thought it might be the same case with this.

but i'll be waiting for some new nine inch nails material!!

I don't really understand all this hi-def stuff. If i download FLAC and then convert it to MP3 does that defeat the purpose?

Yes. FLAC is lossless, the sound is as good as it is possible to be, and is meant for high end audio systems or just general audiophiles. If your music player doesn't support FLAC, WAV or Apple Lossless, then there's not much point in you getting that version, except for supporting the artists involved

Just finished. Shit's great! A few thoughts.

I think all of these songs are great but they all work better together. "A Drowning" in particular I think lands way better in the context of being the closer on the EP. As a standalone song it feels like it should be shorter but as the last track here it works great.

It's not often you hear an EP that feels like a finished, cohesive work unto itself; a lot of EPs tend to feel more like samplers - by simple virtue of how short they are they don't usually get to achieve the same effect as a full-length album. This totally does.

In general, hearing the three songs I'd already heard, in context, made me appreciate all three of them more. "The Space in Between" is still my favorite.

Congrats you three; great job!

Really nice album.

Did they say what the album was going to be about or are the songs about different things?

06/01/10 8:50 AM

Oh and also..can totally hear 'Only' in fur line :p

06/01/10 9:03 AM

I like how each track is different from the next, so we have a bunch of different sounds all in one mix, it's great! So you're likely to find something that suits you, I've said it in another thread, I think "Parasite" is my favoritesmiling smiley Once again, thanks for the Free Download! Definitely will be listening to this for a long while.....

Thoughts:

I enjoy the EP. It's better than 90% of stuff that's coming out nowadays. For a first release it's pretty incredible. It deserves good reviews.

My least favourite track would probably be Parasite as it feels like a lost potential and is very repetitive. I prefer just the preview. Listening to The Space In Between without the video for the first time led me to enjoy it a lot more, even though the video is fantastic.
The Believers is a wicked track, love it! A Drowning is the perfect closer to the album. Hate to say it, but as cool as the beat in BBB is, I don't like the song at all - way too corny!
Fur lined is incredible - musical/vocal perfection.

Musically the album is tight and brilliant, the art work is also fantastic.

People complain about Mariqueen's voice but I really like it, especially after listening to the new songs.

Overall a great listen, very accessible but with it's own agenda also. Much better than I thought it'd be. I think people will probably not be so favourable due to expecting more as it's from Mr Reznor. However, for a first album it is an incredible achievement.

Finally listened to the EP, absolutely love BBB! Still not so sure about the other songs, though.

06/01/10 9:24 AM

I'm only three tracks in at the moment, but is it just me or does this just sound a lot like The Slip? I was kind of hoping for the new band to have a new sound, or for Trent to at least experiment a bit more outside of the new style he found for The Slip, also there's very few songs that sound like... songs. I like industrial style, but sometimes I want something melodic you know?

It's by no means a bad album, I love all the songs so far, but I was just hoping for something a bit more fresh

Upon reading other people's impressions, I've decided I probably need to listen to it a few more times to REALLY HEAR IT and form an opinion, after all, I disliked almost every NIN album the first time I heard it lol (and my above review/impression was only 3 tracks in)

Still haven't received my email for the Hi-Def download either as of 11:49am EST. Got the regular download email around 12:24am EST but nothing else since. Kinda frustrating that Topspin has nothing on their site that allows people who already ordered to access the download directly, or choose to resend the download email, etc.

And ya, I did check my SPAM folder just in case, nothing.

Update: Sent an message to Topspin via [app.topspin.net] and they responded back within about 10 min with the required links for the Hi-Def stuff.
