Whilst I was initially skeptical about HTDA, I have to say this EP has really impressed me. What initially seemed out of place (e.g. Space in between abrupt ending) now makes sense.

Also, the start of Parasite makes me think "God Save the Queen" is about to start playing.

Really liking Fur-lined, howeer, my wife has ruined that song for life for me. When she heard the original video clip a couple of weeks ago, she said that the keyboard part in the breakdown sounds like Ross Geller playing keyboards in Central Perk on Friends!

Liking the EP - look forward to a full album - and (small) UK tour next year!

Okay for some reason the music really feels awesome if you listen whilst walking through a busy city centre.

i kind of agree with almost everything this guy said.

i don't hate it but it seems recycled and not the departure from NIN and it's sound that i was hoping for.

fuck me though, i mean i'll wait until the EP to see how things turn out. i see a lot of promise. mariqueen's voice goes with trent/atticus' sound very well.
I did like some of the points. I agree about Fur Lined, it's my least favourite track on the album. And the "Big black boots" repeated lime in BBB did kind of make me go "wtf?" at first. However, I like all other portions of the song way too much to let that get to me.

And I SO agree about The Believers. Listening to it in an absolutely silent room with headphones last night, I noticed all of those wonderful little sounds and layers that Trent threw in. The song is weird as hell, and I love it.

I heard clip 04 in Fur Lined, and now BBB has clip 01 right?
and OMG A TOUR IN THE UK THEY'RE TOURING THE UK WTF!!! you've just made my day, if that's true.

I agree. IT certainly does have that effect. Much like I'm Afraid of Americans, it makes me feel badass while walking. Like a murderous personal soundtrack.

BBB is clip 1 yes.

No, I was hoping that they'll tour the UK, Trent's suggested they might tour (probably on a fairly limited capacity) once a full album's released, so I was letting him know (none-too-subtley) that we wanna show the band some love on this side of the pond. Sorry to get your hopes up!

If they do tour, let's speculate: what part do you think Trent would play? Do you think his main role would be guitarist, while Atticus primarily controls synths? It'd just be so interesting to watch an entire show where Trent's NOT at the front. I'd love to see one of these shows.

Overall I am pleased and very grateful for the EP
and feel really glad about the darker side of things with The Space in Between
& Parasite coming through, a darker and more sinister side that feels like old great Trent moments.

but I don't want to be sceptical or put a downer on some peoples thoughts and if
you are really enjoying everything that's cool

But I feel that since (& including) ghosts something hasn't been right...

It's just a new direction, nothing to worry about.

I quite like The Space In Between
None of the other songs really do it for me
BBB has excellent background music but I don't really like the vocals and lyrics
The Believers is okay I guess
Fur Lined too I guess but all in all I expected something better. sad smiley

I rather enjoy the EP. Its been ought for, what, 3 days? I'm not going to have a fully formed opinion on it for a while, but as it stands, I like what I hear. Q just may be Reznor's Y. Ono. By the way, I think Y. Ono is a genius.

06/03/10 5:06 AM

I like it but I think the songs (esp. BBB and Parasite) would really benefit from the context of a LP.

06/03/10 7:23 AM

I like it!!! Fur Lined is my fave so far, it's the one, to me, that's not NINish at all. Love the vocals, gives the music a sexy sound, almost chick music, really! I'm a fan! Can't wait to get my physical copy!!!

THIS. I can't believe all of these people complaining about "noise". Did they LISTEN to songs from the TDS era? People keep complaining that the old Trent is gone, then we see a glimmer resurface and people bitch that he's TOO noisy. NIN, too noisy? Is there such a thing?

06/03/10 9:18 AM

i think the patterns and order is still there in the chaos with recent songs, for me anyway, it's just not as precise as it's not all looped sounds anymore, only really beats & percussion are looped, the rest seems to be tweaking the fuck out of synths and getting patterns out of the improvised instruments a-la ghosts sessions.

i don't think it's gone, i just think it's different. i love what trent was doing with walls of loops and guitars and drums in the spiral days, but i'm really digging what he's doing now with walls of synth & guitar distortions and even though i do miss the massive layers of sounds of the fragile era... but that's nin...

i like the electronic feel of this project, and hope it moves more in that direction as it evolves, to further separate it from the current nails sound.

I have a much better opinion of the EP than of the single and video.

Yes, it sounds NIN-ish, Ghosts-y and YZ-like. I kind of enjoy the sound of Q and T whisper-singing together. I like it better than Q alone.

Faves: Parasite, Fur-Lined, BBB ("It's got a good beat and you can dance to it."winking smiley

Passion is what drew me to NIN (and awesome music.) NIN's passion put several thousand miles on my car. So far, this is not quite road trip music. I'm looking for something to move me or to make me move. Preferably both! Someone needs to start singing their guts out. Then, maybe I'll see you on tour some day.

06/03/10 6:08 PM

Just gave it a listen. Good stuff!

I so agree that the UK needs some love! Especially if the BBC do end up producing the YZ thing, it will be like everyone who owns a TV in the UK and pays their licence fee will have part-funded Trent's project and we didn't even get a Lights in the Sky style show (I'm not really that bitter about that, well a little)

Anyone else finding it impossible to add the files to iTunes? I don't know what to do with those additional iTunes files that came with the EP :/

I had a bit of a faff with this, but I ended up able to inport the wav files to itunes where there was no labelling so I had to find the songs by song title and put the 'How to Destroy Angels' in separately using Get Info and manually changing it

That's called "evolution". Something many other musicians lack. Trent Reznor is developing his music in ways nobody else ever went.

This is totally awesome.

I like the EP a lot. Except BBB.

06/05/10 6:07 AM

I like the EP, though not in an "OMG THIS IS AMAZING" sense. Musically, they sound almost like repeats of past NIN songs and...shit, I dunno. I just don't feel it. I, also, don't find the vocals too appealing.

I think it just needs to grow on me.

06/05/10 11:50 PM

Overall, I really liked what I heard. I think HTDA has a lot of potential to evolve into something distinctive and break away from the "NIN" sound. Yes, I heard a lot of sounds that I had heard in NIN songs but it wasn't too distracting.

That said, my only critique is that I found Trent's vocal contributions rather distracting. If Mariqueen is the face and voice of this group, I feel that it might have made more sense to either do some vocal manipulations or bring in another male singer. Might be something to consider for the future.
