I don't write or speak much and I usually let the chips fall where they may, but I feel compelled to give a few suggestions and not appear immodest or brainy. TRez's new band is refreshing although the first and second track harked back to goth in the 80s when TRez was fronting for Skinny Puppy... and a good musical role model to boot and TRez impressionism of their music was less apparent as years went on as he forged a sound for himself; I digress, the song "the space in between" sounds like Death In June and "parasite" sounds like Throbbing Gristle. I am not trying to detract any merit from the songs but to merely suggest that the style is remniscient of a sound earlier, like all music; however, noticing this is important so one can direct the sonic artistic current of the band. All trends I notice have generational cycles of 30-40 yrs with some contemporary influence in it. As goth in the 80s was a reflection of the timber and soul of the blues and darkness of Cash and Pressley with new musical technologies with the forerunner being the Velvet Underground. Now as the cycle swings by again, NIN can be a forerunner of HTDA, whereas TRez is kinda like Andy Warhol as far as musical influence direct and indirect but not maybe the graphic influence. I feel saddened that this band may not garner enough press outside of NIN fanbase and search-query results of mp3 download site's "if you like this then.."- so this band, I feel, has to bust on the scene and in a snarky and sarcatic way. Perhaps, pandering to the oversexed and overprocessed with the front woman in liquid latex on white fur hide for the song "fur lined" with the kind of film distortion of TV on Radio's "staring at the sun" video and perhaps some old-school stobey negative film/positive film effects to balance the distortion during the chorus periods, maybe during the interlude with cuts to the shorts made for the site pre-release at the end of the song. Or doing something dominatrixy with the song "BBB". Heeding any of these seggestions of perhaps any of the ones posted after this messagage(if anyone posts) would further the HTDA promenence on the media circuit if the band is not trying to maintain and underground image. One parting thought about trends: they need a frontrunner and an inspiration from previous music with some contemporary influence, I feel this band is the antidote of Gaga-mania: she only is a echo of madonna from the 80s, just a single entity, but HTDA echoes many different sounds and has the potential of being a forerunner because it has many dimensions one for example taps into the dysphoria of teenage angst, reminding older ones of a time before when their innocence was intact, and as for the space in between...

pssst... Trent Reznor never fronted Skinny Puppy

I wasn't sure whether to post this little comment here or on General Discussions or even in the NIN forum, but I trust the moderators will move it to the appropriate sub-category if necessary.

I just remembered some less than civil comments about how Mariqueen is so "incompatible" with Trent on various websites and Youtube vidoes related to NIN. I found an old interview of West Indian Girl and was struck by how similar her tone and overall disposition was to Trent's. [stereogum.com]

I just thought it would be interesting to share.

Uhhhh, yeah. I'm sure this is exactly the sort of image HTDA wants to put out there.

umm...well she is sorta overplaying the sex kitten vibe in the ep...so yeah, maybe they are.

I really don't understand why you'd say that unless it's because of her "breathy" vocal style, but I certainly don't see that as any sort of "sex kitten vibe". Maybe that's just how she sings.

06/01/10 11:20 PM

how she sings, what she sings (especially bbb, you'd have to be deaf not to hear that one), and she really didn't do that so much on her other band' stuff from what i heard. though i could be mistaken about that since i didn't hear too much.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, i'm just saying the ep is very much sexually charged. i think she's doing it because a) she's messing with the whole pretty girl as front woman stereotype, b) maybe she just wants to be sexy, and that's perfectly fine too, or c) both...or d) none of the above...i mean, like i know anything for sure.

06/02/10 1:29 AM

Over charged sex kitten? Sounds like a fantasy of yours...

It would probably be best if everyone could try to give this project a clean listen through without any preconceptions about what it is or any predictions about what it could be. It's more fun that way. I think you're all horny too...

06/02/10 7:18 AM

a) don't go for girls, sorry. I like penis. b) like i said, maybe i'm completely hearing it wrong, but bbb seems very much like a s&m song just bsed off the lyrics. and why the hell are you all arguing so adamantly that it's not sexually charged in spots? What's wrong with that?? I man, there were man over trent's career in the past that were, so it's not like it couldn't happen now. yes, there are certain "singing" techniques that just scream sex, and she does them.

i've already said i have no clue because obviously i did not work on the album so how the hell should i know? it's my opinion, and i'll stick stubbornly by it tongue sticking out smiley

I'm reading militant more than anything.

Mariqueen's voice is yin to yang of Trent's voice.

A perfect match.

I felt perfectly reminded of listening to The Downward Spiral album 16 yrs ago while listening to How to destroy Angels EP.

Thank you, Mariqueen and Trent,

thank you for reinventing yourself while staying true to yourself!

Keep it up!

Did anybody else notice that the mixing of Mariqueen's voice sounds like a lot of generic industrial/goth vocals from the early to mid-90's? Sorta like the stuff you might here from bands that'd be on a Marilyn Manson or NIN tribute album.

My daughter said it sounded 90-ish...if that's what you mean.

When I first heard Fur-Lined i thought she sounded a bit like Renee Zelwegger (sp?) on Empire Records at the end when she sang. It's that high pitched sorta punky half singing.

Man, I realised all my comments make it lok like I don't like the album, but I actually do like it. I wouldn't say love, but it's a repeat listener for me.

^^^ I've burned it to CD...played it with my windows rolled down even though it's 90 degrees outside.

I want everyone to hear it!

i found this EP to be very refreshing and interesting at the same time. it's still weird to see trent with a "new band" and not NIN. i love mariqueen's voice and it definitely fits the mood of this album. kinda wish trent would've contributed to the vocals but not complaining. the space in between was a great choice for the single and the video was absoletly amazing. reminded me of something trent would've put out 15 years ago. honestly, a much better record than the slip was. although i do love that record, i thought it was a little stale at times. i know HTDA and NIN are two completely different entities, i was just comparing trent's last NIN record to his "new band." it's probably a relief for him that all the pressure of this band isn't just on him and he can focus on the music a little more so than in the past. all in all, a very good record and a great start. can't wait for more...

I am kinda impressed with the sample.. I was pretty hesitant to give it a listen.. Perhaps still bitter about NIN being set aside for this. I think she’s a pretty mediocre singer.. I like it.. I think it will eventually grow on me and I’ll end up loving it

Also what's your top 5 on your ipod right now?

Mine:
The Bloody Beetroots
How To Destroy Angels (obviusly)
Crystal Castles
Cynic Re-traced
Rusko OMG
the entrance band, gonjasufi, the horrors, vitalic & dusty springfield. oh & M83, i know that’s six, but i listen to “saturdays = youth” every day even though it may not be on my ipod.

The mention of The Entrance Band made me squee. I love them and my husband does have the cutest crush on Paz.

Also, the more I read the Q&A, the more I think that Mariqueen is one awesome person.

BLASTING PARASITE, FUR LINED ,AND BBB IN MY CAR IS HOTTT!!!

I think it is awesome to see Trent and Mariqueen sharing something they both love. It's great to see a couple doing what they enjoy together. The music is exactly what I expected from Trent, as well as the composition and production. Mariqueen's vocals are beautifully melodic and tranquil. I wish them the best in their new project. I'm just glad NIN is still going to continue on.

I must say every time I hear it it becomes better. Why is it? I guess they're just good...

That's how I feel. The more I listen, the more I like grinning smiley

I was just about to make the same remark--it does get better with repeated plays.

got BBB stuck on the brain for days...

06/27/10 10:47 PM

To me the best part of this EP is in A Drowning when Trent does that guitar solo more towards the end. This solo man, this was the best he could have come up with for this song, it's so beautiful!

06/28/10 1:34 AM

BBB is damn awesome. I actually had my big black boots and started marching down the road in time with the music - feels like such an arsekicking song to me!
