There's no right and there's no wrong, just people who think they're more right than everyone else (not a bash, but, dang, love the confidence).

I was curious, what do you think happened?

Mariqueen seems a little too posed for it to be a double murder like I've heard people guess... or is it just the way it is? I see it as: Mariqueen killed Trent then bashed herself in the head. It makes sense how come she seems so... statuesque. But I know my theory doesn't make sense with Atticus and Blondegirl there... I saw that as a surrealist add-on, a comparrison between a dead couple and the one still living through grief. And the water shots? ARG! It's complex, morbid, beautiful, awesomeness! Please throw some hats into the ring!

Pitchfork: Did you talk with him about the meaning of the song and why he wanted those visuals specifically?

RS: Yeah, for him it was very much about the neglect that has led a relationship to this-- the demise of love and passion. He was very specific in how the room caught fire and that they had killed each other, and how the people around them didn't really care.

Pitchfork: When I first watched it, I thought the other people were somehow in on the killings.

RS: It's hard because you want to be elusive about what's going on but not so confusing that there was no train of thought. If you look closely, there's a knife next to Trent and Mariqueen's holding a spike of a champagne glass. You don't really know why the other girl is laughing on the phone rather than calling 911. There's something a little more disconcerting and creepy when the audience can play more of a part in figuring things out.

I think it makes total sense that they killed each other, and she seems posed because she would have sat there staring at Trent as she finished bleeding to death. It all happened while the other three were out of the room, and when they came back they just went about their business not even noticing that Trent and Mariqueen were dead. Like maybe the other three don't really care about those two anyway, they're just using them, and as long as they pretend nothing happened they can keep doing so.

06/02/10 5:35 PM

reading that pitchfork article shed some new light. My first thought was that they had been killed by Atticus and lady. And they were enjoying the fruits of their labor in a serial killer fashion.

06/03/10 3:55 PM

mmm maybe the ppl sitting idly by, represent the kinda ppl that are friends of a couple, who watch the couple fight and tear each other down, but don't want to get involved, dont want to step in and point out what the couple is doing to each other. and when it ends badly, they;re not to be inconvenienced by it, cause hey, they had nothing to do with it

an analogy for the apathy this society breathes

When I first saw the vid, I thought it was meant to be a Chris Benoit tribute.

Strangely cheap interpretation. I don't think he has actually understood the video.

I don't have any interpretation ready but the David Lynch hommage is so obvious.

colors, character acting... and motel scene.

When I pair the video with the title of the song, it shows that we really do try and fill the spaces in between. Why did they kill each other? What are those other people doing there?

06/05/10 8:33 PM

My first interpretation was the obvious double murder scenario with Atticus as the killer, but my thoughts have changed a lot after seeing it several times. It started to come off to me as a situation where Trent and Mariqueen were brutally murdered sometime in the past and later, Atticus and the blonde girl choose the same room either oblivious to what happened there before or knowing but too preoccupied with their shallow interests to care.

This is pretty much what I thought. The words of the song seem to me that they are referring to their now open in public relationship(marriage), and the criticism that came with it.
Thats just what I thought when I heard the song.

regardless.. I'm addicted to that video. I've watched it like 30 times. it's really well done..i enjoy it a lot smiling smiley

This video is symbolic of true love, and loveless. Trent and Mariqueen lying dead are symbolic of romance, and passion. They've got the flowers and wine and are entranced by their love for one another. While the couple on the couch are showing no attention to one another. One's watching tv while the other is on the phone. They symbolize no romance. The romance in their relationship is very much dead, while they are still alive. Trent and Mariqueen's romance is still very much alive, although they are dead.

I don't think they killed each other. I think they've been killed by the man in the bathroom (bare foot).

Sorry, I posted this the first time as a new topic but cannot delete it...

* The dress looks like a wedding dress, some Champagne as well, clean wedding ring, paper (Bible?). The wedding seems obvious.
* Champagne on one side, beer on the other.
* Cheap wedding: motel, plastic roses
* What's played on TV is the outside of the motel (look at the window in the first 10 seconds).
* Knife is from Hampton forge - Tradition at its best.
* No smoking sign.

Something is wrong with the room:
* The door cannot be at this place.
* The door is open on the outside and closed in the inside.

Sorry, I have no interpretation yet.

One more thing: the blinding light may be the light we're supposed to see when we're dying.
People who say they have seen the light are of course not dead, so she's not dead, maybe dying, but not dead.

Atticus watching the sport of dirt bike racing, (perhaps a competitive sport to some) is paralell to him wanting England to win over the U.S. (world cup). Who will be no. 1?

As for the rest- I thought M&T lying on the floor in pools of blood had something to do with Hellraiser/Coil. Burning flesh and blood....

And...little detail that caught my eye- the battery operated key Trent's character has- looks like it's for a Ford model, possibly 2003-2004. I know a lot of these look similar, so I could very well be wrong.

Overanalyzing is a flaw....

Referring to the lyrics of the song I see a reflection of the public view on the relationship of the couple. There were a lot of haters when T&Q made their relationship official. I think they had to take a lot of really very bad thoughts and "wishes" by a certain bunch of ppl. And because TR is in a way interested in his "fans" he caught some of this and translated it in this video.
Atticus and the blonde woman show the doings of this kind of ppl when the public would get that T&Q had such a deadly struggle. The certain "fan-girls" would run to the phone and give it to the next friend, being happy and telling that one knew it from the beginning and that Q is that bad to kill TR. The "fan-guys" would be somehow stucked, staying calm (smoking) doing their business and go on with their common life.
The motor race is a mirror for the news: the run fast, one after the next, what is the winner or loser of the race of the dramatic, the news. It will be forgotten tomorrow.
So when the room and the figures are burned down there will only stay back a black burned-out hole.
And that would it really be for all: an empty black hole.

Just one way to interprete without taking the details, e.g. the stereotype-like accesoires of a romantic relationship. Maybe those are shown for giving that the relationship between T&Q is as like as every love between a man and a woman, or: to give just the expression that for the certain ppl the relationship is as like a normal and that those ppl can't imagine that there are other, deeper, true or something kinds of love than certain ppl can imagine. uuuhhhmmmm....this understandable?!

...I like the vid.

I think, the burning bed means something like: Instead a propritiation with sex, like a lot of couples find their peace with each other again, T&Q "choose" an other way: to kill each other in the deadly struggle. Metaphorically they let their bed scorch= aren't always on the make. It's a german proverb referring flirting and sex and such: nichts anbrennen lassen, but T&Q "let the bed scorch".

08/03/10 1:27 PM

i have a bit of a thing about burning, it freaks me out a little so i cant say the video made me joyous but it was a good one. as for an interpretation, i dont really have one, i did think it was a well shot video.
to be honest the first time i saw it it made me feel sort of weird but nice inside. they have a shot of her wedding ring and it looks like shes in a wedding dress and they were both dying together, its like they love each other and now they have each other they'll live and die together. i thought it was quite nice.
i think it was a shame that people were so gnarly towards the marrage, im a bit of a typical girl nin fan in the sense that i am completely head over heals for trent but at the same time im so happy for the pair of them, its awesome!!
