Random PHM Questions

So, I'm sure many of you have seen that video on the PHM page.

[phm.nin.com]

It has three live songs from 1990 (excellent quality, best I've seen that old, ever).

The weird thing is the intro. It has various samples in it of speech, "give me the gun" is one, and a really nice drum beat. Why have I never heard this before and does anyone know how much this has been played?

It was the intro on all shows of the Hate 1990 tour. Never played since then.

Hi guys,

This mmay have been answered elsewhere but, is there any word on an Australian release? This re-master of PHM doesn't appear to be available here. sad smiley

Peace,

Canadian iTunes Store? Or other digital distribution? Any word, what's happening on that front?

11/25/10 8:05 AM

Similar to K0sm0s...I live in Singapore.

The [phm.nin.com] site only lists Amazon.ca as a place to get the disc in CD and vinyl format. No news about Australia or Singapore.

And it also seems like the digital version is only available in the US for now, as far as iTunes is concerned BUT the disc doesn't start shipping until the 30th in Canada so maybe, just maybe it will be available on iTunes Canada on that same date too? One can hope.

I don't know more, I'm afraid. If I learn anything else, I'll let you know.

Yes, please let us know if/when the PHM re-issue is released in Australia.

pomophobe: the physical copy is available at HMV and at Sunrise since yesterday. Alas, it's still not up on iTunes Canada.

Still no word about physical copies in Australia or Singapore. I've asked on another board and I'll let you all know if I hear anything.

I've just noticed that PHM is finally up in the JB Hifi online store. I'll check tomorrow to see if they have physical copies in store yet.

My questions concerns the 2005 reissue of PHM. Does it sound different from the '89 version?

12/04/10 1:21 PM

CD doesn't. Vinyl probably does.

Not in the slightest - it was NOT remastered, there is literally no difference unless you take really, REALLY bad care of your music.

Hey people,

please don't yell at me or throw stuff because of my stupid question, but:

If I buy the reissued PHM (digital release) now, Trent Reznor gets all the money (minus taxes as they apply and the percentage the stores take), right? A simple "yes" or "no" will do, I really just don't know any better and would hate to send more money to people I lovingly refer to as corporate bastards than I really have to.

Thanks for the answer!

pretty sure a decent amount of it also goes to Bicycle Music, who own the rights to the PHM recordings. tbh, i'd rather send them the money than Interscope, TVT or Rykodisc, so i don't think you can go wrong by purchasing any version of the remastered PHM.

12/25/10 4:08 PM

Cuts will go to Trent, the album's producers, probably Blumpy, UMe and Bicycle. The only albums where 100% goes to the NIN camp is Ghosts and The Slip

I mean that's just crazy. I have searched a lot, and I found out that the PHM2010 Release is really expensive here in Germany/Austria. The cheapest I've found was 18€, not including shipping. Everything else was over 20€.

When I search in the US-Interwebz I find PHM for 8$, really cheap. Why can't it be that cheap, or at least cheaper than 20€, in Europe?

12/25/10 4:02 PM

Because record companies are, at the end of the day, dicks. I got it from amazon.com (US site), even with shipping it came out cheaper

12/25/10 3:42 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but what technically happens and has happened to PHM when it is 'remastered'? thanks

12/25/10 4:11 PM

This belongs in the Pretty Hate Machine forum.

What happens is that the original songs are gone back to and mastered in a different, and more modern way. Usually this guarantees louder and a little more bass, but it varies for every kind of remaster. The audio geeks in the forum can probably give a very detailed explanation if you're uber interested

Would the original CD art for Pretty Hate Machine be the black and silver CD? I asked because I've come across pink and blue CDs of Pretty Hate Machine, but they all turned out to be imports.

And are there any pink and blue PHM CDs from the US?

SalavanteK,
TVT Records chose black 'cause it was cheaper to print, same goes for both singles printed in monochrome. They were not sure of nin selling potential and didn't invest in coloured CDs.

Blue/pink PHM CD from USA is this

Thank you for clearing that up for me.
