Seems like it's not a joke. PHM will be released again. Release date: July 12, 2011.

That was the first source. Then a lot of article popped up, just google the new release date + nin + prety hate machine.

Later today the amazon.com preorder links showed up:

CD
12"

According to this site, this release is not the 2010 remaster edition. This might be true, as amazon.com says the vinyl edition won't be double.

06/01/11 10:08 AM

There is nothing on nullco.com about this and honestly I just don't see the point of re-releasing the original master copy.

Although if it does come out, $12 dollar vinyl sounds pretty good. cool smiley

06/01/11 11:31 AM

can't wait for a 10th copy in my collection, so hoping that'll remain just a rumour

06/01/11 12:32 PM

Rob confirmed on twitter that it's only a rumour

Sorry, but I think you're wrong. He said Null wouldn't release it. Maybe they have no idea what it will be, but that does not mean it won't come. Just like the "Back to Black Vinyl" reissues of TDS in 2008 and in 2010.

We already have amazon links, that's why I think something will be released. According to amazon the label is Umvd Labels. Do they mean Universal?

What's the point?

If such a thing actually does happen, I suppose it can be a chance for anybody that never owned the original version of Pretty Hate Machine to finally purchase it if they ever wanted to, and for those that are very particular about the omitted sample from Midnight Express used in Sanctified, but just didn't pick up any of the original copies of Pretty Hate Machine when they were still in circulation. It's also cheaper than the import that has the Rezbor misprint on it. That's the one I kept seeing in Best Buy, and it's always no lower than $16.99. But please don't get me wrong, as I'm aware as to how such a release can be pointless as well.

Hi Nine Inch Nails fans! I'm proud to be among you!

I may seem like a jerk advertising Rammstein in my avatar but NIN won't fit!

So please excuse me for that, anyways my topic is about this.

Amazon.com sent me two e-mails about a Pretty Hate Machine on vinyl
with no Get Down, Make Love and hopefully it's not a two record set.

So obviously it must be true and it's a great deal! Good price! Awesome!

I just wondered if anyone knew about this and I'm just letting people know about it.

What version of the album is this? is it a reprint of the original?

07/12/11 8:15 PM

As far as anyone can tell (and we really have no idea) it's a reissue of the original, but then some sites give info of it being the remaster in old packaging. Basically, unless you're a collector don't buy it, as it will either be the old album on vinyl, which you can get easily, or the new one on vinyl, which you can get easily.

I found the blog below from ioda marketing; I don't know if they are actually involved in the marketing of this release, or are just reporting on it. I checked iTunes and the amazon mp3 stores, and this version of PHM and the singles are available as of today.

Digital Digging: Nine Inch Nails

Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Album: Pretty Hate Machine
Label: The Bicycle Music Company
Genre: Alternative Rock : Industrial
UPC: 847108062895
Territory: US
Release Date: 7.12.11

In November 2010, The Bicycle Music Company in conjunction with Trent Reznor’s Null Corporation released the newly remastered reissue of Nine Inch Nails’ groundbreaking debut album Pretty Hate Machine (2010 Remaster) to critical acclaim. And while remastered albums can give us a fresh sonic perspective on a classic work, sometimes it is the original version that holds the true feeling of the album.

And so after many years of being out of print, and for the first time ever digitally, comes the original version of Trent Reznor’s 1989 industrial synth-pop masterpiece Pretty Hate Machine as well as the EPs associated with the album’s hit singles (Down In It, Sin and Head Like A Hole). All songs, including the breakthrough singles “Sin,” “Down In It” and “Head Like A Hole,” were written, arranged, programmed and performed by Reznor. With sales surpassing 3 million copies, ultimately reaching Triple Platinum status, this highly influential album is a significant document and testament of its era and a natural companion piece for NIN fans and purists.

What's really important is, can I buy the 3 second track with Kelly Ripa on from the Head Like A Hole single on amazon mp3 now?

07/13/11 2:59 AM

the 3 second track with Kelly Ripa is originally part of Down in it (demo), separated on USA single for some weird reason.

07/13/11 2:21 AM

It was also on the HLAH maxisingle. Regardless, if they really are going to put Halo 1-4 up for download, I wonder if they will really do all the tracks

He may not be happy, but I'm glad the original master is still around. I think it's superior to the remaster.

07/14/11 9:21 AM

I remember Trent saying something about what to do with the record if the label is undercutting him and ripping fans off...

thats what he tweeted a few hours ago

and again and again and again!

Saw this at Hastings up here in utah. $12 isn't bad for vinyl but if it's anything like the original vinyl I remember my turntable would shut off with about a minute left of sicnh and ringfinger. I didn't think it was that long. But I'm torn. I like the sound of the 2010 remaster but hate how the continuity was fucked up.

we need more things like this to make reznor angry, so he'll make more menacing and dark music. i heard it'll be rereleased in japan soon too.

And he's 100 percent correct. What a rip-off. If you want the pre-remastered original version, it's not too hard to find, and most fans have it anyway.

but isn't he getting his royalties from this new pressing too?
ok, fuck money, isn't he proud his debut album gets more copies?
nowadays reznor is more proud of remastered edition, right? or does he not care at all?
anyway i know i can sleep easy, i didn't feed corporate monster (most of my copies are second-hand)

i just think of the fact that its just another release like it was made when it came out....some thing only die-hard fans who care about different UPC's would want

07/15/11 10:39 AM

Man, I'm glad I didn't buy the reissue. Especially after TR just said to avoid it.

07/15/11 4:29 PM

I was at Newbury Comics today in Cambridge and they had a bunch of new copies under the new release section. Probably some people will buy this new edition, thinking that it's the best one, not realizing that an even better, remastered edition was re-issued last year.

07/16/11 1:08 AM

Yeah, the remaster may be better... if you're deaf. Pretty Hate Machine was made in the 80's and trying to remove the 80's sounding production by distorting the shit out of it is ridiculous. It's a product of it's time. No matter how much you change the sound of the music, it's still gonna sound date cause the lyrics are cheesy as fuck. Thankfully I like a bit of cheese in my music.

Some of us don't like the remaster's "better" artwork. Or lack of sample in Sanctified (that was awesome, damn it). Or the way the remaster's vinyl tracks are separated due to the superfluous inclusion of GDML.

It's a shame TR isn't happy with the original getting a release, but at $9 it’s hardly much of a cost to get the original Barry Diament-mastered and SUPERIOR-sounding 1989 pressing for $9 still sealed and in mint condition. And if you’re seeking out the 1989 original TVT release on CD wouldn’t that make TR even more upset? At least TVT and Interscope aren’t seeing money for this reissue.

Let those who prefer the 2010 remaster enjoy it as it sounds like a lot of other typical 2010 dynamically challenged releases and let those who prefer open dynamic sounding music enjoy this new version.

For $13 if the vinyl pressing is done nicely that's a steal for the new vinyl as well, considering there are 6 copies of the original US pressing on Discogs ranging from $37.99 to $129.99 - [www.discogs.com]

I do think the 2010 vinyl sounds good, but choosing to go over 3 sides instead of 4 is just something I find hard to swallow as that would have kept all the segues intact.

There will always be those that say "whatever Trent says you should do" but when it comes to PHM the original CD simply sounds better and I don’t see anything wrong with reissuing such a great recording.

Being that that original TVT release isn't being produced anymore, nobody involved in producing it is getting any money from it.

Four sides for an 11 track album! That'd be three songs per side, except for the last one which would be two songs! That's even worse.
