It think it actually varies but Wikipedia says that most people from Generation Y are people that have been born some time between the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s. It's sort of debatable however because some people would also tell you that anybody that was born between 1990 and 1992 is a part of Generation Z.
It's sometimes confusing to me, but that's how it seems to go. Some people however say that Generation Z also starts in the later part of the 1990s through the early 2000s. As for Generation X, I'm positive that it covers all of the 1970s, and the first two years of the 1980s, as well as most of the 1960s, but then again, it's not that cut and dry, because some people also say that Generation X's last year was 1979.
And with Pretty Hate Machine coming out in 1989, I've always had a hunch that the majority of NIN's oldest old school fans would probably be from Generation X along with some fans that were born in the earlier years of Generation Y. I say this because some parts of the early 1980s are also considered to be Generation Y by some.
