Why have a civilization when we are no longer interested in being civilized?

I am dead serious when I ask this. Everywhere I look, all I see is people treating each other like shit. Husbands beating their wives, little kids getting shot by thugs just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, politicians refusing to work with each other due to inane bullshit, rich fat cats on Wall Street/big financial institutions doing whatever they can to screw Joe Blow citizen just because they are greedy fucks....

What the fuck is wrong with everyone? Why is it so freaking difficult for people to just be kind and patient towards one another?

And people wonder why I love Bill Hicks' quote on how "Hitler had the right idea, he was just an underachiever. Just kill everyone!"...........

Things have always been this way. It just seems like things are worse due to more media attention and increased exposure to all things fucked up. Things like morality, ethics, standards these things are always fluctuating, ebbing and flowing depending on what era you live in. This world is a horrible place I'm afraid. Always has been. It seems people are to blame for it.

i kinda think xanthe is right. i do my best to try and be kind to other people. maybe it makes a difference, maybe it doesn't. i will live and i will die. and a trillion people will still be assholes. i guess i just try to focus more on making my own little world a happy place.

^^ This exactly.
You can only be yourself, Nate. Just keep doing what it is you do. If you can make one person smile, laugh, help someone in some way, or give them love.. Than you have accomplished more than you realize.

The world is a shitty place with even shittier people, I
stopped attempting any kind of reaching out because in
the end it just burns me or bites me. I'd like to think
they're some people aren't like but however, I haven't
met any in person.

good point, xanthe.

kindness and peace is in the majority though.

only a constant media frenzy every time something bad happens does it seem all fucked to hell. i mean there's a lot of bad shit in the world that's not on tv too but i tend to think that society is getting more peaceful.

we don't put hugs on the news though.

i mean crime rates are down for one.

In a word: conditioning.

Most people's individual problems are obvious reactions to the environment they came from. It is easy to point out these flaws and to exploit them and we all do it at some time or another to various degrees. It's just what we are trained to do. But in order to make any real difference, which is possible, we must first do what we want others to do: change. We must learn to conquor our lesser habits and continuously look for better ways to approach obstacles. The only way for anyone to believe that this is possible one must first do it and lead by example. Though that leads to a bit of a lonely and highly frustrating existence it is truly a privledge just to know the difference. So many suffer never knowing why and in turn spread their suffering to others. By not allowing them to break you down you open the door for others to follow. Trust me I know how easy it is to hate the world but why do that to yourself? Do justice to your own existence by filling it with as much happiness as you can. This is not selfish, it is kind. When you give that to yourself you have much more to give to the world and it will in turn react to you in a more possitive manner. smiling smiley

People are animals end of story.

I think Ghandi was also asked. "what do you think of civilization?"
Ghandi reply, "I think it would be a nice idea"

But don't quote me on that.
