I think it was "Down in it" back in the early to mid 90's. Back in the 90's, I listened to a vast selection of music, NIN was among my favorites then. Over the years I changed and drifted. Pretty hate machine and the Downward spiral were the only albums I heard (I didn't know about "Broken" at the time). Over a decade passed, I had all but forgotten about NIN and Trent. Then one day about 4 or 5 years ago a local radio station played something new from NIN. It was the song "Only". I loved it. I eventually went out and bought "With Teeth", and now I'm back. I have every album, and some remixes. I'm still trying to find some of the more rare works of Trent. I love it much more now than I did back when I was younger. I can appreciate it for what it really is now. I can honestly say, out of all the music I've listened to, and even obsessed over, I've never found music that intimately fits into my psyche as does the work of Trent Reznor. How to destroy angels, love it. The film score, love it. If not for that song "only", I'd be missing out on all the work that came after TDSpiral. Every album different than the rest, all the while staying true to his nature. It's not just the lyrics, or his singing, but also the music, the sounds, the noise. It's beautiful, ugly, vulgar, perverse, gloomy, strange, nostalgic and with an ironic twist, uplifting. The sounds and music gives ambiance, and an expressive mood. Trent's work is fitting for a deep thinking mind. A lazy mind couldn't fully perceive it which partially explains why the mainstream doesn't embrace it.(The mainstream likes shallow materialistic simple music). The dark nature of the content and Trent's integrity as an artist limits his popularity, and that's what makes it so special. It stimulates, entertains, appeases and expands the active mind. Emotionally and mentally, and at times is cathartic. Trent's work could also be considered avant garde. Genuinely true art, from a true artist. I'm so glad I rediscovered NIN(Trent Reznor). It's profoundly impacted my life.
