Closer

All my siblings are many years older than me, so i grew up listening to bands like NIN, Marilyn Manson (Rock is Dead was my favorite song when i was like 6, and Green Day (don't hate me for writing that, i hate them too) without really knowing who they were. It wasn't until 3 years ago in 7th grade when i got my first ipod and itunes account that i rediscovered these bands and remembered how awesome they were.

Head Like A Hole.

For me it took many years to get into NIN, although their presence has always been In my life. I never really grabbed on and became dedicated until last year. In my early years, I distinctly remember hearing Head Like a Hole and Closer on the radio fairly often. I remember asking my mom who Nine Inch Nails was, and the only thing she could tell me was that 'they had at one time been banned from Salt Lake city' which likely isn't true... But anyway. Years later I recall seeing the video for The Hand That Feeds on of all things an Official Xbox Magazine disc that had demos and videos on it. Even then I really didn't get into NIN. Years passed and I remember hearing the DJ on the radio describing the packaging of Year Zero saying that 'the disk changed color when we put it in the computer, this is unlike anything I've seen' and even played the USBM prerecorded message on the air. After which he played Capital G. STILL. this band NIN wasn't on my radar... Finally in 2008 that same DJ was explaining this new 'Nine Inch Nails album available for free online, TR at it again' after which he played Discipline. And yet still, I was listening to fucking led Zeppelin or some shit. Finally in early 2009, I had been enduring a terrible chapter in my life. family deaths, depression, loss of likely my first real relationship with a girl, and failing friendships because of that rift. A sophomore in high school, I was fairly introverted and didn't have that many Friends to begin with. However a new friend I met who lived in seattle previously showed me MOTP and then told me of this 'Downward Spiral' album that was the darkest piece of music he has ever heard, it was his favorite band of all time and I needed to hear it, If i could stomach it. Being that I was already fairly depressed I figured not much more could really hurt me. I played it all the way through. And loved it. Went on a rampage for anything NIN i could buy. Bought Beside You In Time. Blown away. Needed to see them live. Learned that this would be their final tour. sad smiley Me and that friend then drove all the way to Colorado to see their show. Even then I was still a NIN noobie and didn't know most of the songs... But now I know all of them, and I.. Sadly live vicariously through Closure and AATCHB etc now. I must admit that NIN has made me a lot stronger than I ever was before. I'm 100% different than I was before. For the better. It really encouraged me to stand up for myself and make a change. Now I'm just under 18, have a great group of friends, amazing girlfriend, and have an even better attitude. smiling smiley so there's my story.

Closer, which is the standard introductory NIN song for all of us 80's babies NIN fans.I saw the video when I was in my preteen to teen years, but even then I thought it was cool and kind of sexy.

I think it was "Down in it" back in the early to mid 90's. Back in the 90's, I listened to a vast selection of music, NIN was among my favorites then. Over the years I changed and drifted. Pretty hate machine and the Downward spiral were the only albums I heard (I didn't know about "Broken" at the time). Over a decade passed, I had all but forgotten about NIN and Trent. Then one day about 4 or 5 years ago a local radio station played something new from NIN. It was the song "Only". I loved it. I eventually went out and bought "With Teeth", and now I'm back. I have every album, and some remixes. I'm still trying to find some of the more rare works of Trent. I love it much more now than I did back when I was younger. I can appreciate it for what it really is now. I can honestly say, out of all the music I've listened to, and even obsessed over, I've never found music that intimately fits into my psyche as does the work of Trent Reznor. How to destroy angels, love it. The film score, love it. If not for that song "only", I'd be missing out on all the work that came after TDSpiral. Every album different than the rest, all the while staying true to his nature. It's not just the lyrics, or his singing, but also the music, the sounds, the noise. It's beautiful, ugly, vulgar, perverse, gloomy, strange, nostalgic and with an ironic twist, uplifting. The sounds and music gives ambiance, and an expressive mood. Trent's work is fitting for a deep thinking mind. A lazy mind couldn't fully perceive it which partially explains why the mainstream doesn't embrace it.(The mainstream likes shallow materialistic simple music). The dark nature of the content and Trent's integrity as an artist limits his popularity, and that's what makes it so special. It stimulates, entertains, appeases and expands the active mind. Emotionally and mentally, and at times is cathartic. Trent's work could also be considered avant garde. Genuinely true art, from a true artist. I'm so glad I rediscovered NIN(Trent Reznor). It's profoundly impacted my life.

needed new music, as i had been playing instruments for a short while and i realized everything i listened to back then was garbage. 'Only' and 'The Hand That Feeds' where radio regulars and so i picked up With Teeth and Pretty Hate Machine then. didn't know what i was getting into.
fucking great decision.

Closer and Survivalism. Can't remember how or when they found their way onto my iPod, I just remember seeing them on there one day and giving them a listen. I've been hooked ever since.

The Perfect Drug

Saw it once at MTV2 and loved the video at first sight, but it took me some time to find and love the (almost) entire Nine Inch Nails works.

10/29/10 11:54 AM

The Closer remix used for the opening credits for Se7en.

10/29/10 1:25 PM

Gave Up or March of the Pigs I don't remember exactly.

10/30/10 7:02 PM

The first song i ever heard by NIN was Only. I was watching MTV in the morning before i went to school back in 2005 and saw the video. Then i started asking about the band. Only in the last 3 or 4 years have i been getting into NIN, but now im a die hard fan. NIN has probably replaced Rammstein as my favourite band now
