A piece on the Today Show about The Social Network:

Winklevoss twins: Facebook was our idea

In 2002, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss say they presented
their idea for ConnectU, a social networking site for college kids, to Harvard classmate and programmer Mark Zuckerberg, now the founder and CEO of Facebook. Their account will now play out on the big screen in “The Social Network.”

I think it gives you an idea that there is more about the movie than "it's just a movie about Facebook" but more about the dynamics of the creation and the deception, etc.

eta: I've not read the book nor have I researched the story behind Facebook, but I'm betting there is a real big lesson to be learned about Entrepreneurship....and I don't think this is another Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, either.

I won't see the movie because it seems pointless to me and thus has no appeal, but I don't think Facebook is bad. It does truly connect people in ways that might otherwise be impossible and can encourage serious discussion. It can be used in a variety of ways to generate awareness about a particular subject or cause. It's also become vital for businesses, big and small, and no matter how commercial or non-profit. True, most of the comments on my news feed are trivial/cryptic/drunken/sometimes completely inappropriate. It doesn't change the fact that it's a useful thing.

I can honestly say I have never been on facebook and have no intention on ever going on facebook. I don't give a shit what people are up to and I don't want anyone knowing my business. I only care about the movie because of David Fincher and Trent doing the soundtrack.
This is the only website I post any opinions about anything because I love NINs and Trents music means something to me! I like hearing other fans opinions on the band , music , projects, etc....

So ... you don't want people knowing what you're doing and you don't want to know what they're doing, but you want to know what NIN fans are doing ...

Not trying to get you to use facebook, but seems a bit of a double standard. And as the film isn't about facebook, it doesn't really matter. The film is about people, at no point will it suddenly poke you or friend request you.

Here's a weird coincidence:

Howard Winklevoss - the twins' father who made the family fortune - lived in my hometown of Mercer, PA and went to school with my aunt.
Actually now that I see that written out, that's a pretty boring coincidence. Sorry.

And for those of you "morally opposed" to seeing a movie about FB: It's not a movie about FB - it's a story about creation, greed, entitlement, power, justification, revenge and all the moral questions that arise. And it's funny. And there's girls in their underwear. And you can dance to it.
Go see it!

I noticed the soundtrack was listed as "dance/DJ"...I can totally envision some of tracks being played at the high energy dance clubs.

You'll be gaining new fans...left and right! winking smiley

The next trailer should just be you dancing in your underwear.
Dramatic increase in ticket sales.
Thank you for your time.

Ok, he said my point better.

Also, I kinda like that. Seems Mercer pumps out more talent than it should - I'm expecting your old neighbour to now create perpetual motion.

Exactly. I saw a screening of it the other day. It's not particularly about facebook, and it's neither pro nor anti-facebook. It's about the people who created an exceedingly popular website and the drama surrounding them and their creation. Facebook just happened to be the website they created. I honestly don't even give a fuck about facebook and probably never will. The movie clearly isn't meant to change people's opinions; it's just stating what was going on with Zuckerburg and co. in the events leading to and following its creation.

i noticed in an interview about how david fincher doesn't like social networking..which i'm hoping the film may point out some of the flaws in the reasoning behind people thinking that because 500 people follow them or are friends with them on twitter or facebook...it doesn't mean they actually have that many friends.

i was in the NIN chat room months ago when these guys were really baffled by my behavior and started making fun of me because i was trying to have a deep conversation rather than just "LOL" this or posting icanhazcheeseburger links.
people feel they don't need to have deep thoughts or real reasoning behind what they feel or think. they can just post completely unintelligent opinions and remarks and feel justified and completely reasonable without question at the end of the day.
i'm sure people have always been that way since before computers were around..it just seems more rampant i guess.

they have their little online community that doesn't challenge their thinking or disagree with them because they don't want lose any more followers themselves or simply they don't like to dig a little deeper on subjects with their internet induced ADD.

there's a big difference between real social interaction and social networking..it's like the romans using lead acetate as sugar. it might taste very similar but after a while it's just poison.

but that's my high hopes for this movie.

You know, it's funny how there is more people sticking up for this film that have yet to see it and somehow it's wrong for those that don't really care to see it at all. I know this is a NIN Forum, but you don't have to worship all things Trent/NIN, don't get me wrong, I think the soundtrack is good, but there's nothing wrong with people not wanting to see this film, cause it just doesn't appeal at all to their needs....No offense to what Trent says, but I'm sort of pulling out of wanting to see this. I mean, the more I see the trailer, it just isn't at all interesting and when I read about Critics comparing this thing to Citizen Kane and The Godfather; that's just a little over-the-top of a statement in my opinion. I can see it being tied to those films under the notion of "Greed, Power, Betrayal, etc." But to put it in the "Masterpiece" Category; I'm sure these were the same pricks whom said the same thing about Avatar. I don't know, it's just not an appealing story. I could careless about what RottenTomatoes ratings say, cause the moment you take a critics word on anything is the moment you should start questioning your own original opinions. I love Fincher's earlier work, but this looks exactly as the same slow and boring pace as his recent features have been. I'm sure there'll be points of pure intensity and have great parts, but I don't see anything intriguing enough to pay $$$$ to go see this. Hate on me all you want, it's just my opinion...I'll just wait for the DVD and I hope I'm wrong on this.

Duh, yea. I like NINs fans. How is being on NIN.com do people really know what I'm doing. What I'm saying is; it is a website that interests me. I don't see how that is a double standard - I see it as stating a fact. And, I didn't say I didn't plan on seeing the movie. I said I like David Fincher movies, and I know it is about greed and making enemies. I do plan on seeing it.

You know, it's funny how there is more people bitching about this film that have yet to see it. Seriously, you're not interested, don't go watch it then. Nobody here is forcing you into the theater to see a good movie. Yeah, you have a right to your opinion, as do I, and my opinion is that your opinion is close-minded shit...unless you are really Armond White in disguise, then carry on.

Now as for someone who had "yet to see it", well I just saw it last night, and seems to me if those who are shitting on this movie actually went and watched it themselves, they would be eating their words. It was easily one of the best movies I've seen in the past several years, if not decade with No Country For Old Men being the only other contender. Absolutely everything fit together perfectly. The acting was outstanding, Trent's score was about as spot on as it gets, and for something that ran nearly 2 and a half hours (I lost track due to the ass-numbing amount of previews) the time flew by. And this movie isn't completely generous to the dimmer of the audience who repeatedly ask "What's happening?" every five minutes.

And brace yourself people...Justin Timberlake is on screen at the same time Ghosts 2 and Magnetic/Ghosts 14 is played! And--the horror--he actually turned in quite a great performance! HOLY SHITBALLS, RIGHT?

Go see this movie. It is fantastic.

10/02/10 4:22 PM

haha. You talked me into it.

10/02/10 6:04 PM

I had the opportunity to listen to the entire soundtrack today. Amazing, just amazing, even better than Ghosts 1-IV, IMHO.

10/03/10 2:14 AM

I just can't stop listening to this album! Great bit of work, so much so that despite being a life long bass player, went and bought a keyboard off ebay yesterday so I can play along, as there's not much bass action to be had here! Learnt 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' yesterday (well, sort of!). Picking it up today - bizarrely from a road called NINN Lane!!

Thanks for the inspiration Trent and Atticus.

This is really great music.

I don't think the score can be nominated for the Oscars. It used some Ghosts music. Remember the Greenwood effect? Jonny's There Will Be Blood score was disqualified because he used stuff he had done before.

For the most part, it's all Trent's stuff in the movie except any point where there is a stereo being played in the scene, like at the opening when Mark & Erica are having their conversation in the frat house or bar or whatever it was, or after the Interns have been chosen and a boombox is turned on, or the nightclub scene with Mark & Sean where they have to actually speak up above the noise (instead of most movies where the music volume is brought down and the actors speak normally...precisely how most conversations never happen in clubs or even bars for that matter). Ultimately, there's a lot more Trent than other stuff in here. VERY MINOR SPOILER THAT'S NOT REALLY A SPOILER ANYWAY: The only non Trent music that plays over that isn't generated by a stereo or anything is a Beatles track at the end, which is about as appropriate of a song as you could pick for that scene.

There was an article I saw somewhere that discussed the nightclub scene with the sound designer Rey Kylce, who did a pretty amazing job overall; if your theater has a shit audio system, you'll really be missing out. In Motion sounded amazing ...it actually makes me wish I had a surround system to play the blu-ray surround version of the score. Damn apartment living.

Quoted for truth. Rashida Jones always looks amazing. She needs to be in more things.

Also, Timberlake approves of Trent's soundtrack. [music-mix.ew.com]

Justin Timberlake posted:

Likely a Grammy more than an Academy Award.

Score was amazing. Thank God I didn't listen to it beforehand.I've been a fan of film scores since I was a kid & I dislike listening to a score before seeing the film. I'd end up waiting for certain cues & paying more attention to the music than the film. So much in that film would've been different for me had I heard it beforehand. The music made some of the exchanges really fucking tense.

Just amazing working.

You're wrong. The pacing is pretty frantic, as is the dialogue. There's nothing slow about the movie at all.

10/03/10 11:15 AM

Sometimes I wonder if Fincher can't live down Fight Club. Seems that's all people want after that film.

I've enjoyed all his films since Fight Club. Zodiac & TSN being his best. And honestly, I think TSN may be his best ever.
