1) Trent, what are some of your favorite books?

09/23/10 12:17 PM

(I apologize if these have been asked before - I didn't read the whole thread beforehand.)

1. Are there any particular video games that you are currently playing that you recommend to us NIN-fan gamers?

2. What is happening with the video game-related project that, in the past, you and Rob talked about working on?

3. Would you consider ever performing songs from The Social Network soundtrack if you were to tour again?

09/23/10 12:37 PM

Question #1
You're nearing almost a decade of sobriety from drugs and alcohol: How do you deal with temptation on the road or at home? Have you ever had a sponsor, attended meetings, or are you totally self reliant? Is there anything you miss about indulging in that world?

Question #2
In the years since "With Teeth" came out your productivity has been unparalleled by anyone in music: What do you attribute to this wave of creativity and what day to day advice can you give to someone looking to turn things around for themselves, musically or otherwise?

Question #3
What is your ideal "day off"?

Question #4
I've always been curious about your studio. Now that Nothing Studios is defunct, are you working right out of your home? How long do you invest in building such a space and do you feel it's more beneficial or distracting to you working from the comfort of your home as opposed to traveling somewhere day to day?

Thank you for everything, hope you're enjoying this much needed and much deserved break!

this is probably not the biggest question for everyone but jeese it really burns me

how come further down the spiral is the ONLY NIN record that has never been pressed to Vinyl.. what a major heart breaking gap in my vinyl collection sad smiley

09/23/10 1:36 PM

Occasionally re-iterating what others have asked, but they are IMO the burning issues on most peoples minds who frequent these boards.

Question 1:-
Fragile re-issue update

Question 2:-
Year Zero 2 update - album and TV show

Question 3:-
Wave Goodbye DVD update

Question 4:-
Has TSN soundtrack fulfilled your stated desire to do more Ghosts, as there are sione obvious similarities, or will there be more instalments of this in the future?

Question 5:-
I know you're working on the HTDA album, and there was talk of a tour, though this may be compromised by your joint forthcoming parenthood. Is there anything over and above that which I have mentioned above that you can see coming to fruition in the next two years. Details not required, there needs to be something for us to drive ourselves crazy about speculation-wise!

Question 6:-
Back to the HTDA album, there was some criticism, particularly with regard to the comparative dispassionate delivery of the vocals (which obviously could well have been intentional) on the EP. Do you as a unit take comments such as these with a pinch of salt, and carry on regardless, or do you sit up and take notice, as presumably this isn't just a vanity project, but a commercial thing too?

Question 7:-
If/when NIN does record again, would the intention still be to work with Ilan, Justin and Robin. I'm sure this is something that would be more than welcomed, as you obviously developed into a powerful and cohesive unit over the course of 8 months last year.

Question 8:-
Is there a soundboard recording of the unique Sonisphere Knebworth show in existence? If yes, is there any chance that this may be purchasable from NIN.com in the future?

So many questions....so little time!

09/23/10 2:36 PM

Question 1.
Are you, by any means, a fan of heavy metal? If so, who are your favorite bands and who do you see yourself collaborating with?

2.
What are your thoughts on major events and political issues this year? (The BP oil spill, the "Ground Zero" mosque, etc. )

3.
What are your thoughts on President Obama? Do you think it is still very likely that he will be re-elected in 2012?

4.
Do you still think it is possible that an actual "Year Zero" could happen in 2022? Do you think that any religious group, dissatisfied with the current administration, could somehow seize control of the United States government, even if it violates the Constitution?

5.
What would you do if Sarah Palin were elected President in 2012? What if she was elected today?

6.
What do you enjoy more, working mainly by yourself (early albums) or working with a group (Ghosts, The Slip, HTDA)?

7.
Approximately how much of what you're currently working on is Nine Inch Nails?

8.
In a Rolling Stone interview in 2007, when Year Zero nearing its release, you said that you were already writing "Part 2, the conclusion". Can we expect it to be released in the near future, or has that idea been scrapped?

9.
If you could reunite an older NIN lineup, which incarnate of the band would it be?

10.
Are there any songs that you would really like to cover? Anything you have been dying to get out of your system, but couldn't find an appropriate time to do so?

Great questions, patrick_nicholas!

Here are some other possible questions:
(9 and 17 can be skipped now, obviously)
posted:
1. There are plenty of social networks that allow people to share what they’re watching or listening to, but relatively few for what they’re reading. That being said, what are you currently reading and who are your favorite authors? What are your favorite stories?
2. Everyone collects something. Everyone. What do you collect? What are your hobbies?
3. You've certainly taken good care of your body and it's really shown for a while now. What do you do to stay in shape and stay healthy? Do you have a specific workout/gym routine you stick to all the time?
7. With Teeth's physical package was an experiment with digital media requiring fans who wanted to see the booklet to head to the Internet and download it, but it was later confirmed that a deluxe edition with a book/essay would be available during an upcoming tour. Whatever happened with this and will it ever see the light of day?
8. The A.I.R. “movement” was a very interesting concept that went viral yet you rarely mention it now. Was it primarily a fictional part of a concept album that in your mind is no longer in context, or if part of a larger plan for future works, in what way are you planning to continue its socio-political-artistic movement? Or was your intent to give the idea to the fans and let them form it into their own ideology, and how might their continuation of the concept integrate into future NIN projects?
9. For the upcoming tour, is there any kind of recurring theme that is surrounding it or is it more of a "Farewell, but before we go we're gonna lay it all out there and go nuts on stage" kind of thing?
14. To expand on what you said in the Digg Dialogg about figuring out a way to monetize nin.com, what plans have you considered to make that a success? What about putting a donate button on the site?
15. What do you think of fan tributes like the Rock-afire Explosion performance of 1,000,000? ( [tinyurl.com]) Is there one tribute that stands out in your mind that you'd like to share? What is the creepiest or nicest thing a fan has ever done for you?
17. You have a history of making songs exclusively for movie soundtracks and lending your existing music to movie trailers. Would scoring an entire film be something you'd be interested in?
20. Many relationships and friendships have formed between fans due to your hard work with bringing fans together. Have you been surprised that any of your projects yielded unexpected results among the fan community and in what way was the outcome different from your original expectations?
21. You were able to tap into a large market and garner lots of fame fairly early in your career with NIN. What are the most important lessons you have learned from that?
22. Rob has blogged about his general dislike/hatred for beards. You've had a beard numerous times since then. Has this caused any tension? Has your opinion on beards changed? ( [tinyurl.com])
31. Is "The Spiral" closed forever, and will there be a replacement for it?
32. Why? If you can tell us, was the Darien Lake Show canceled?
33. What is Art?
34. What was your first impression on Venezuela? Is it a place you'll like to visit again?
35. What is the one question you get asked over and over again that you wish people would stop asking?
36. What's the real reason for the "unforseen technical issues" in Brazil and Colombia?
37. If in 25 or 50 years The Fragile is considered your masterpiece (and some already do so), what are your thoughts and feelings about that, especially given that it was the album which, as you have said, did you in?
38. Could you please play Sanctified on this tour?
39. What colour are you eyes, I can't tell if they are brown or green
40. What will be the status of NIN after this tour?
41. Do you believe that we have something like a soul?
42. did you really do that zelda cover that is blasted over the internet?
43. Do you ever wish NIN hadn't gotten so big?
44. What question you wish to be asked about yet no one ever asked before?
45. Who does the artwork for the NIN Cds?

09/23/10 5:27 PM

Question 1
on the With Teeth .pdf lyrics poster there were two sets of (we assume) 'lyrics' that weren't on the album ('Message to no one' 'The life you didn't lead') along the words 'The warning' written on its own. What were they?... if they were album cuts did The Warning become the YZ track?, and will the others see the light of day?

Question 2
In late 2009 you promised a new NIN album this year, with a child on the way and your time taken up for The Social Network score, is this still planned or has it been delayed?

09/23/10 8:30 PM

The visuals accompaning your work have often used effects of corrupted media which where popular at that time; examples being the "snuff" movie you did for Broken, Closure with its look of a heavily abused VHS tape, the iteration of nin.com which looked like writen on a broken typewriter - or in recent years the digital artifacts of both the With Teeth and the Year Zero era.
My question is: where would you take future NIN releases visually? Do these aspects come to you naturally while you're writing music, are they more of an afterthought or do these aspects fall usually in Rob Sheridans domain?

09/23/10 11:48 PM

House music producer/DJ Deadmau5 has stated in the past on his Twitter and his SoundCloud that he would love to collaborate with you on something, is this a project you could see yourself doing?

09/24/10 12:11 AM

Is there a specific social issue that you are ruminating about that might inspire your future music? Are you currently more focused on things outside of yourself (politics, social issues, health reform, etc.) or are you more introspective about events or feelings in your own life?

09/24/10 3:23 AM

I don't think this question is interview material, but since I'd like to know...

Regarding TSN score:

Does the paycheck come from score sales only, or are movie ticket sales involved, too?

Wondering how far the support goes.

09/24/10 7:15 AM

How do you determine whether a musical idea will be NIN or HTDA or any other project you're involved with?

Do you simply work on something and then decide what band/project that output suits best?
Or do you sit down to work on something specifically like NIN or HTDA or say The Social Network?

Plus, what are some of the major differences between working on these various projects?

09/24/10 7:14 AM

Question 1:

How was the process of making TSN soundtrack? It's somewhat similar to what you did in Ghosts, or is it completely different? And we know you are interested in soundtracks, this is something you think about doing again?

Question 2:

What are your favorite books?

Question 3:

What kind of music do you listen? Is there any genre you hate?

I don't know if Trent likes to answer such questions, as the last two. The Digg Dialogg guy asked him a question about music and he gave a "non answer". And the questions are kinda stupid, I know, but it's just curiosity.

And people, enough with the Year Zero series questions...

09/24/10 7:51 AM

When, and how, did you start playing the guitar? Did you take any lessons or are you self-taught? Are you the kind of person that would play for his family and friends with an acoustic guitar near the fireplace?

09/24/10 9:53 AM

Re If you could go back and score your own original soundtrack for a movie you loved as a child or teenager, which one would you choose? Would you remake the movie as well or only change the soundtrack?

09/24/10 10:24 AM

Do you think your music would have as much impact/popularity if it was first released in today's consumer and music climate?

This is what I definitely want to know more than anything else in the entire world.

09/24/10 10:51 AM

How much do you know in terms of musical theory and the technical aspects of music, and how much of that do you use on your songs?

09/24/10 11:17 AM

It seems appropriate to bring up this question now-what are the details behind scoring One Hour Photo for Mark Romanek?

Isn't it curious that eight years later the second Mark Romanek film (Never Let Me Go) would be released contemporaneously with your second attempt at scoring?

Who is more of a perfectionist, you, David Fincher, or Mark Romanek?

1. Nine Inch Nails is over as a touring entity, as we all know, but what about "How To Destroy Angels" or your work as "Trent Reznor" (i.e. your soundtrack work). Will there ever be a live component to those?

Also,

2. The "Quake" soundtrack is fantastic stuff, but also hard to find; it's a read hidden gem for hardcore fans. Will there ever be an official release for this?

09/24/10 11:42 AM

1. How has Grant Morrison influenced you? He is one of my favorite writers!!!

2. Have you read Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles" comic book, and is that a "Barbelith" refference on the HTDA cover?

What are your thoughts on going out to smaller venues, on your own time, as just yourself...you, a keyboard, and a guitar?

Q1 - Your life has clearly changed for the positive in recent years,(congrats!).
Whilst this has not affected your creativity, how do you perceive NIN now?
Is Nihilism something you feel you can always tap into, regardless of circumstance, as a source of inspiration artistically?

Q2 - Do you enjoy cooking, if so what would be your signature dish?

Q3 - When it comes to gaming, what's your console of choice and why? Or do you prefer to play on PC?

Q4 - As an Englishman im interested to know..have you ever tried Marmite? If so, love or hate? They make Marmite Cheddar now too, it's marvellous.

09/24/10 12:57 PM

Is there any news about the Year Zero television series with HBO? I've been telling them that I would subscribe to their channel for that show alone.

If not on HBO, is there any chance of it being produced elsewhere?

What are your thoughts on President Obama?

This.

1. I remember you sending an email right before Election Day in 2008, I think, urging people to vote as you thought it an important election. I also seem to remember you being pleased with Obama's election, praising him as someone sane. Do you still hold this view? Do you think Obama has copped out on his promises or that he's not truly a good leader? Or do you still have faith in him?
