Hi Trent,

I know that this is probably one of the most cliched and common questions you are ever asked but I also think it's one that just about all of your fans are curious about. You obviously are not done with music, which is wonderful, but do you think that we will see any type of NIN record in the foreseeable future?

Try not to hate me too much for asking. But it has been on my mind.

How long does it take to go through all these questions?

A long time winking smiley

Also, just a reminder that this is open until later tonight - it is unlikely that Trent will see your messages/stories (and there are other places for you to post/send comments). So, keep your posts clear and concise with the question you want to ask and we would really appreciate it.

Focus on formulating a great question....

Thanks.

3.) What can you say about the song "Just Do It?" Did it eventually evolve into the song "The Downward Spiral," or are the two songs completely unrelated?

If he answered this question it might be one of the coolest things ever. Also maybe combined with the origins/backstories of My Dead Friend, The Warning, and Message to No One.

If you could describe Atticus as any type of sauce, what would he be?

What's your favourite venue in Canada and USA?

This may have already been asked, but I'm not going to read through 13 pages to find out:

Rock Band 3 is coming out in late October. With its new keyboard peripheral it seems PERFECT now to get some new Nine Inch Nails DLC. I remember reading in a Joystiq interview that you selected the songs based on which ones were the most fun to play on the various instruments-since there's a new instrument in the mix now do you think at some point you'll pick out a few songs that are fun or challenging to play on keyboard and which songs do you think might make for good candidates?

I'd also love to see some of the post-record label songs available through the Rock Band Network or as DLC.

Hey Trent,

I remember toward the beginning of the year BT asked fans through his Twitter account if they would rather wait longer for new full-length albums or if they would rather him release more EP's closer together.

This immediately struck me as something you might have considered at some point. What are your thoughts on working in an "EP-only/more in smaller doses" format for a short stretch of time, i.e. releasing one EP per quarter for a year or something similar?

Thank you for everything you've done and congrats on being on the verge of becoming the most kick-ass dad ever.

1.) Between Ilan and Justin, it was revealed that songs such as Demon Seed, And All That Could Have Been, and The Great Below were rehearsed for the Wave Goodbye shows, yet they were not performed. Why not?

2.) On the final Wave Goodbye shows, you had such special guests as Peter Murphy, Gary Numan, and others. Was there anyone you tried to get to come out and perform with you that didn't?

3.) What can you say about the song "Just Do It?" Did it eventually evolve into the song "The Downward Spiral," or are the two songs completely unrelated?

Interesting questions here !

09/26/10 1:05 PM

when is your collaboration with gary numan going to happen

09/26/10 1:07 PM

While sitting on the toilet and humming a tune in your head, does that song have priority over other tunes you might have thought of during the day?

Ok okokokok serious

Have you been playing your new little one music? Do you think you will create a lullaby and keep it only for your family to hear?

Everyone needs time alone, do you prefer a basement or attic?

When you are laying in bed with Mariqueen at night, do you say to yourself, "I finally made it".

Am I being followed?

Question 1:
With the release of "The Social Network" OST soundtrack, will there be more solo or duo composing of music with Atticus Ross and/or How To Destroy Angels?

Question 2:
Is there a possibility of The Null Corporation becoming a open label for future artists who would like to follow along by influence? Either somewhat similar to Nothing records in your early years or totally different or not at all?

Question 3:
With regards to Pretty Hate Machine being re-released by the Bicycle Company, is there any possible prediction of when exactly would a re-release find it's way into daylight?

[To reviewer: You can choose whichever of the three, they're alternatives in case anything goes on bloated..]

By the way, congratulations on a successful release of "The Social Network" movie direction and the OST! Never seem to depress Trent!

Guys, we are going to be sorting through the questions over the next few days. To help us out we would really appreciate it if you would follow a 'template' above for example, lets say. Clearly number your question(s) and save other comments for elsewhere, or just post once per your question. It will make things easier for us to compile the list.

Many thanks.

Well, it's a matter of getting used to various formats, I don't suppose formatting existed on purpose right

etc...

hopefully templates simplify your work!

Question 1:

Is it possible that we will see a re-release of Pretty Hate Machine soon?

Question 2:

I know you think that "Kinda I Want To" sucks, but if you were to tour again would you ever consider bringing it out of retirement?

Question 3:

If you were to ever tour again do you think that you could do a tour in which the set list is PHM and Broken? Almost similar to what you did with the Downward Spiral show?

Yes I am a huge PHM fanboy. Thanks Trent! Congratulations on the new release and the family.

I find it really hard to believe that you are not religious in any way when I listen to the lyrics in your music. Especially Year Zero. Could you finally tell us what you were singing about in that album or will you never give that up?

09/26/10 2:05 PM

Q1: When you sit down and think about all of your previous work, which release would you say is the one you are most proud of? What are your reasons?

Q2: Do you have any songs that you wish now you had done differently? Ever hear something you once did and feel like it should have sounded different?

Q3: Are their songs that you wished you would have performed live and never did? What are they?

Q4: How do you want people to remember you, as an artist, and as a person?

Thank you for everything you've done Trent, your music and story have inspired me more than anything and has kept me sane throughout my life.

The Social Network scoring is amazing! I know you said you and Atticus had enough material for an album or two...does this mean we'll be hearing those masterpieces soon? smiling smiley

which leads to my next question...do you think they will be put in a "Ghosts" format ( I love Ghosts!)

09/26/10 2:32 PM

lets talk tech:
1) I enjoyed the Wired profile on HTDA recording. Could you expand on the chop-up technique employed for "the believers" -- is this done with Ableton Live? How did you come up with this technique?
2) What other techniques do you use for coming up with songs? Could you expand on, for example, how "1,000,000" was written in contrast to "the believers"?
3) You've long been an advocate of Pro Tools and Ableton Live. How do your songs tend to get written these days -- looping in Live, then dumping into Pro Tools?
4) I've always wanted to know... how were the crackling sounds on The Line Begins to Blur made?

thanks for all the inspiration and great music!

09/26/10 2:37 PM

Gear questions:

1) How do you acquire new gear? Do you have people who recommend pedals/synths etc to you, or do you regularly go browsing in shops / online?

2) For HTDA & Social Network music, did you only use what you had at your studio, or did Atticus and Mariqueen bring in gear that they felt would be interesting/fun/would work with the music you where writing (I remember you saying something about Mariqueen and an iPhone app)?

3) When writing music, at what point do you start bringing in effects and plugging pedals to pedals to synths to pedals etc, to achieve the wondrous sounds you make, and most importantly, how do you know when to stop plugging effects into each other?

Thanks. And all the best.

09/26/10 2:50 PM

Now that you're off the road would you consider hosting a charity or fund raising event at Castle Reznor (aka your house)? You just give the word and I will be there with a pocket full of pesos!

09/26/10 3:05 PM

Q1: Is there any possibility, since you hook up with David Fincher again, that you will consider some work together (or with Chuck Palahniuk himself) on a musical project for 'Fight Club', as it was said in the past?

Q2: You have sold a lot of your gear, so in that case do you record music on few instruments and then change the way it sounds in electronic way, or do you still have a lot of gear left and record music in an 'ordinary' way adding some effects in the end?

Q3: Will there ever be any opportunity for the citizens of other countries to participate in some contests that you organise?

Q4: How do you work on your music? Is it more like 'using the studio as one big instrument', or do you create songs from the begining, or is it something different? Is that process totally concious (from the musical point of view), or do you just let your mind flow around some motives and sounds?

And again thanks for the gig in Poland. Probably the best two hours in my entire life.

09/26/10 3:33 PM

Q1: Will you tour again, and if yes in what form and will you visit Poland ? You were nicely surprised here, weren't you ? winking smiley

Q2: Do you have any TV/movie production on your mind and what are the chances of making it real in the nearest time ? I mean... how 'soon'.... SOOOOOON! grinning smiley

Q3: Do you like a feet massage ? (I could not make up the third question but I remembered that once in my dream I asked you if I youd like to have a feet massage and you said 'yes'. I have no idea why you agreed in the first place :] )

Thanx and feel inspired

For starters, I'm super glad that we have another chance at this. You guys has posed some really good quesitons on here already, I'm glad that I got to submit mine before the deadline. Hope you like them!

1) If you could go back to a single exact moment/situation/choice in your life and do something different than what came to be, what would you chose and why?

2) If you could ask your collective fan base a question or to perform a simple request, what would that question or request of us be?

...and now for the big one...

3) Technically speaking, you are the one and only true voice of what others refer to as the "band" Nine Inch Nails. Therefore, it's solely up to you to decide when exactly to cease production from this project. As a professional with steady direction, plan, and intent, do you have what one may refer to as an "end cap" on the saga of what is Nine Inch Nails? Granted you've ended touring, but do you already in your mind have an X amount of songs/albums/ideas to express via Nine Inch Nails before you completely close the lid on this project?

-Brock(C)

09/26/10 4:48 PM

How were you approached to do this project for The Social Network? Was it completely random or did you contact them? And was it an easy or hard decision to make given your HTDA stint had just begun?

09/26/10 4:50 PM

Q1) did you ever feel the need to reorder nine inch nails’ catalog in order to make everything look more homogeneous, considering how many different versions and pressing exist of every single halo in terms of bonus tracks, country-specific and format-specific content? you should agree that it’s not always easy to distinguish between what is to be considered “canon” and what is to be considered an artifact induced by the record label (like was the case with the survivalism two-parts release), and that it’s quite a difficult job for a fan to obtain – or even to listen to – every single song you released.

Q2) how did the writing process evolve during the last projects? do you still feel the need to experiment different ways of creating music, like was the case with the minimalistic approach in with teeth or the fast-and-spontaneous approach in ghosts i-iv, or do you prefer a specific method over the others?

Q3) considering how artwork is important for your works, how do you think a standardized digital-release-only format will alter the general effect and impact of the visual part of your releases in the future? do you feel the need to always find new ways to present artwork like you did in many of your works (the poster and the never-released artbook for with teeth, the year zero arg, the ghosts i-iv visuals section, images slideshows etc.)?

09/26/10 4:51 PM

My question:

What are some of your favorite books? Has there been any book(s) that has directly inspired you when writing music (other than the ones we know about, like Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven and Clive Barker)? What are you currently reading?

09/26/10 6:02 PM

1. The "vintage, analog, mono-synth or die" close mindedness of most synth enthusiasts can be really aggravating. It's refreshing to hear your work where an MS-20, a Virus, and something like Bebot can all play nicely together. When you envision a sound for a track, do you instinctively know which piece of gear you'll make it on, or is it a more experimental process?

2. When you set out to make a new sound, is the process completely deliberate, or is it more experimental? You've got three decades or so of patch making under your belt, so I'm just curious if you always end up with exactly the sound you intended, or if you let the sounds take you places you didn't expect?

09/26/10 5:02 PM

Q1: how do you feel in this project? I mean, Fincher asked you to do the things in some way or how the things were constructed?

Q2: (out of TSN) Is there any chance to free some tracks from the first albums to get in remix.NIN? (really ugm sucks! but is everything lost?)

tnks 4 bring us chances like this!

3. You've worked with Fincher more than once now. Also, Chuck Palahniuk mentioned listening to The Downward Spiral while writing Fight Club and March of the Pigs is featured on his documentary. In the crazy, fantasy world in my head, you three are bestest buds and hang out every single day. How well do you actually know those guys, if at all, and what's the dynamic when you're together, all being masters of your respective crafts?

09/26/10 5:47 PM

What is the state of re-release of The Fragile? Any estimated release date? (Spring 2011?)
