you're wrong, at the time they pretty much were.

I told you that I was going to stop engaging with you in this conversation in this thread. We both made our arguments, and that is that. But I would like to respond to this one last comment you made.

I don't know where you live, maybe in other parts of the world, terrestrial radio is different, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. That said, in the US, I can assure you that Nine Inch Nails and/or The Prodigy were never played on the same stations as Robbie Williams. In the States, Robbie Williams would be played alongside bands like Matchbox 20, Sting, etc, to an adult contemporary audience. Nine Inch Nails, on the other hand, would be played on modern-rock stations, alongside bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

If you want to respond to this post, please do so by PM. I apologize to the board and the mods for my participation in this boorish exchange.

Agree with Rhett here.

NIN's songs are much less industrial than the likes of Skinny Puppy, and contain more of an element of pop to them - they are much more 'listenable' than the rest of them.

I sometimes forget that half the songs on Year Zero exist.

Trent's noise layering on La Mer was too distracting from the piano.

Starfuckers Inc. should have stayed a TDTWWA B-side

Home is the best song from the With Teeth era

That's what's wonderful about it, though. It's a great blend, the song isn't just about the piano.

I fucking love Getting Smaller. The verses are retarded but you can't resist its energy.

In general, NIN's music is far more accessible than any "industrial" band that you mentioned. Maybe Skinny Puppy had a song here or there that could receive airplay, but overall, PHM is going to apeal to a mass auidence the way VIVIsectVI would not.

That's 'cuz VIVIsectVI is a crappy album in general.

(Actually, I'm of the opinion that there is no overall "good" Skinny Puppy album. There are just several songs off each album that are awesome, and many that are not.)

I can't get into a lot of new stuff. Starting with With Teeth, the sounds seem to be lower tech, and overall just less "productiony," which I don't really like as much.
The drums sound very live on the new stuff, even more so than previous albums where live drum recordings were actually used... probably because of different snare sounds and more cymbals -- not sure, I'm not a drummer.

It would be really nice, in my opinion, if TR went back to synth-based stuff, with some guitars still in there somewhere. If his future NIN plans don't include touring, this might be a better idea -- IF he actually wants to do it. Playing shows including new songs with 10 synth tracks probably isn't very good tour-wise, and hasn't really been since the early 90s, unless you aren't an actual band.

Because I'm a fan of catchier-sounding music that tends to have really significant content or messages, I tend to like the first three albums (including Broken) most.
I guess it just depends on what TR likes doing most creatively.

Am I the only person who downloaded The Slip or something?

Uhm... The slip is probably my favourite NIN release!

And All That Could Have Been. Whilst good, it isn't as amazing as everyone says it is

You need to go back and listen to The Slip. Head Down is actually one of the most deep songs in terms of content and message that Trent has ever done. At least to me anyway!

I second (or third) Kinda I Want To was better as a demo than on PHM.

I'm not sure I'd agree with Twist being better than Ringfinger.

This is the best NIN live song performed.

Aww, c'mon, man. The Slip is a "band" album. Every song in that sucker is obviously tailored to having the live band play it. All the live bass, all the cruddy guitar lines (Discipline is seriously the only good guitar line in that album. I am not kidding. All the other ones sound like Finck's guitar is farting.) and 90% of the drums are live. Except for those fillery instrumentals. And Lights In The Sky which is the most boring NIN song ever, conceptually speaking. (And the lyrics are meh.)

There's a difference between opinions and bashing, this is getting a bit too close to that second one. Also, I happen to think that those "fillery instrumentals" are the highlight of album.

Totally an aside here, but I thought Too Dark Park was and still is a fucking great Skinny Puppy album, beginning to end. Shits all over Pretty Hate Machine, so I think. But he deviates, off with his head. And out.

HTDA bores the hell out of me except for Fur Lined.

The Limitless Potential is the only remix album I can listen to all the way through without going completely insane.

I want a reworked version of Complication where the lead part isn't the only thing making the song. Its a phenomenal riff but not worthy of 2 and a half minutes. (maybe not controversial)

I can only stand modwheelmood's version of The Great Destroyer. The originals breakdown at the end is a waste of time in my opinion.
