Best song on TDS, if not best NIN song so far?

07/05/11 2:10 AM

No.

07/05/11 1:12 AM

One of them, in my opinion.

07/05/11 2:47 AM

I hate the metallic sloshing sound in the second squeaky bit.

I've edited that out in my version, though, leaving a definite five-star song. But there's some pretty damn stiff competition on TDS...

07/06/11 1:40 AM

I either listen to Ruiner on repeat for hours or skip it constantly. I don't know its a confusing song for me.

I'm not sure what part you're referring to, but if it's the one that I'm thinking of initially, I think you may have ruined the song.

no pun intended.

The song opens with a 'squeaky bit'. After the first chorus ('how'd it get so long') there's a second, only this time there's an awful mid/high-pitch sloshy noise in the background. Presumably it's an extremely low-quality or distorted recording of a cymbal or festive bell.
In my opinion at least, it sounds a great deal better without the sloshing.

It's certainly one of my personal favourites. I couldn't believe it when Trent played it live when I saw NIN in 2007 because I didn't think it got played live very much. I was well pleased!

07/06/11 10:13 PM

I usually skip it.

Literally a 9.9 out of 10 song from me, and in my top three NIN favorites that I don't place above one another, for me, Ruiner, 1,000,000 and AATCHB. It pretty much has everything that could make up a great song. It has Industrial bits, Electronica bits, Rock bits, a 1970's esque solo that works so well, and every part has so much power to it. Easily the best song of TDS, IMO.

It would be a 10/10 if that revolving hi-hat track during the chorus of the demo was carried over to the final version.

Also, that "squeaky bit" you're referring to... that's an odd way to put it. It always sounded more like a teapot howling to me, tangled up in the machinery.

Anyways, I know what you're talking about with that metallic sound. It's not so low-quality on my flac rip, but it doesn't bother me either way. I like the way it sounds.

An interesting note: I was screwing around seeing what other layering could make Ruiner sound even more awesome, and an idea hit me that seemed totally improbable in music. I took a sound clip of a tank moving, the tank treads rolling very heavily, modified it to go with tempo and stuck it in there. Sounded like Industrial heaven, literally. If I find the file I've got to upload it some time.

Please do! I'd be very interested to hear it.

I love it! But The Becoming is the best song on TDS. I would like ruiner more if it wasnt so hard to hear trent on the fast and really distorted verses before the choruses, while it does sound really good, i find myself looking up the lyrics all the time to remember what hes saying lol

...But that noise makes that passage different from the earlier ones.

Also, it's in all of the prechorus bits.

I'm not sure what 'squeaky bits' and 'howling teapots' are referring to exactly, but if it's the part I'm thinking of, that's a sample from The Elephant Man.

Watch around 2:40 in this segment: [www.youtube.com]

Or maybe it was around 9:10 in this one: [www.youtube.com]

...either way, I'm pretty sure that it. You can ever hear the rhythmic clanking in the sample that was used in the song.

Earlier one in the singular, and it's different anyway. The synth from the first verse makes an appearance in the second squeaky bit, and the first squeaky bit has an alternating-channel ringing noise.

Huh, I never noticed it in the "Ruiner's got a lot to prove..." section before, but you're right, it's there. The thing is, it's barely audible in that section because there's so much going on, but the squeaky bits are quiet and simple enough that it takes prominence over the synth, drums and "teapot". In my opinion, it's loud enough that it degrades everything else in that section and makes it wearing to listen to.

:edit: Culture Failure, those links don't work internationally; I can't play them.

i have absolutely no idea what you guys are talking about "squeaky sound" or "sloshing". i listened to the song for like an hour trying to hear it...

07/18/11 11:04 AM

at the very start of the song, when it's just the beat playing, there's a high frequency loop of a squeaky sound. you hear it at the end of each phrase, in the fourth bar (i.e. just before the beat re-starts every time).

07/18/11 11:29 AM

Good, I really appreciate it live.

07/18/11 8:19 PM

'ruiner' is an excellent piece of work.

No, that's not the one we're talking about. That's great; that makes the fucking song.

Compare the beat in the beginning with the beat that plays after the end of the first chorus (start at 1:22). Throughout that entire segment, there's a midrange-pitched distorted rhythmic sound. (And I don't mean generically manipulated, which is usually what people say when they say a sound is "distorted," I mean it has fucking distortion on it.)

I'm downloading the split 5.1 channels right now to put something together if you really need it.

07/20/11 6:51 AM

You're talking about my fav song EVER !
Yes there's noise at 1:22. For me it's better because you have the beginning with something "more". NIN songs become more and more powerfull and never repeat.

07/22/11 12:12 PM

I love it because it's noisy.

Greetings! My name is Mike, I come from Russia. Recently I heard the Downward Spiral and was very much impressed (I am mostly U2 fan and until recently did not know anything about NIN). In particular, I enjoy the song "Ruiner". It's got brilliant lyrics IMO, this song is very personal for me. However, on the album version I can barely hear what Trent sings in the chorus, and this annoys me a little. I assume this is how this song is supposed to play, but anyway. I was wondering, are there any remix or live versions of this song where you can hear the chorus lyrics more clearly than on the album version? If yes, would you kindly tell me the remix/show and where to get it? Thanks in advance.

Josie Gallows was once spotted pulling a newborn from a refuge in labor. He did this with his right hand while his left hand had a desert eagle trained on 900 enemy operatives. All of this is true and factual.

Hah, I just realized that what I am talking about is actually a pre-chorus, not chorus =) I am talking about the lines starting with "The Ruiner's got a lot..." and "The Ruiner is a collector"

04/21/12 2:33 PM

Hey mike. surprised no one posted this.. i hope the lyrics are what you wanted... if so, [www.azlyrics.com] use that link for any nin lyrics questions... hope this helped you out bro.

FIRST
the ruiner's got a lot to prove he's got nothing to lose and now he made you believe
the ruiner's your only friend well he's the living end to the cattle he deceives
the raping of the innocent you know the ruiner ruins everything he sees
now the only pure thing left in my fucking world is wearing your disease

SECOND
the ruiner's a collector he's an infector serving his shit to his flies
maybe there will come a day when those that you keep blind will suddenly realize
maybe it's a part of me you took to a place I hoped it would never go
and maybe that fucked me up much more than you'll ever know

ninwiki.com is far superior for NIN lyrics, as it's not moderated by people who appear to be totally deaf for half of the songs tongue sticking out smiley
