Underneath the top bar of the black box I have the date I got married (it read 092006 in a script font) Long story short... I'm not married anymore and needed it covered. Took me 6 months to think of what I wanted to have it covered with. NIN music is what helped me get through the divorce. Kind of my "cover up" for the feelings I had... figured I owe it to the band to have this on my body forever.

Been listening to NIN for 16+ years and had to put this ink on my arm. I still haven't found any other artist that touches me like NIN does. Trent will always have a lot more special things to offer and share with us and NIN is still very alive. Thanks Trent and crew! Hey, Im posting a new thred as in a few weeks I am booked in to get a tattoo of the La mer lyrics on my ribs. The reason for the thread is Im struggling on which lyrics I want to get. Of course as you all know, on the track it is Denise Milfort, however in terms of what is spoken and the english translation etc I am literally puzzled. To explain here are the lyrics given on NINWiki.

Creole French:

Et il est un jour arrivé
Marteler le ciel
Et marteler la mer

Et la mer avait embrassé moi
Et la délivré moi de ma caille

Rien ne peut m'arrêter maintenant

English translation:

And when the day arrives
I'll become the sky
And I'll become the sea

And the sea will come to kiss me
For I am going
Home

Nothing can stop me now

Alternat Literal Translation:

And the day has arrived
To thresh the sky
And to thresh the sea

And the sea has embraced me
And it has dispensed me from my cell

Nothing can stop me now

Now here is my lost in translation problem. When I use a translation program online and input english to frenc or vise-versa the lyrics come out as;

Et quand le jour arrive
Je vais devenir le ciel
Et je deviendrai la mer

Et la mer viendra m'embrasser
Car je vais
Maison

Rien ne peut m'arrêter maintenant

Which when I listen to the track doesnt seem to be what is being sang/spoke. SO essentially my dilemma is what is the truth in terms of lyrics and translation, I understand that transferring a passage from one language to another can be difficult as words can mean different things but for example if I translate the lyrics given on the NINWiki using google translate it says;

And it happened one day
Hammer Heaven
And pound the sea

And the sea had kissed me
And delivered me from my quail

Nothing can stop me now.

Im just a little confused and would like some help before I get this on my body.

I'm a Frenchwoman so I believe I can help you.
First of all, nice choice of lyrics! La Mer is such a beautiful song... makes me cry everytime.

Now back to your dilemma! IMO, the most appropriate translation is the literal one (I started with the one you can find on the NinWiki and modified a few things):

And the day has arrived
To thresh the sky
And to thresh the sea

And the sea has embraced me
And it has set me free from my cell

Nothing can stop me now

But I'm not sure you're asking the right questions... IMO, the translation French/English is not what matters the most. These lyrics are kinda enigmatic, as most NIN lyrics, so I believe what truly matters is the meaning you want to give them and more importantly, why you chose to get those tattooed under your skin forever! When I think of La Mer, when I close my eyes and listen to this song, I visualize a lonely woman feeling empty and desperate abandoning herself to the sea seeking peace of mind and relief and putting a end to her misery. In other terms, I think about the comforting idea of suicide, suicide as the ultimate relief... which is actually the origin of the song, no secret there... Trent said it himself!

Do those lyrics speak to you? Is this something you want engraved in your flesh for the rest of your life? Well if so, whatever your reasons may be, do it! Go get this tattoo, don't give a shit about the accurate translation of creole French!
