But the thing is that Broken seems like a social commentary. Especially Pinion, where the guy is (literally) eating other peoples' shit.

So Broken = social commentary and YZ = political commentary. Sure, a different approach and sound, but still the same (yet evolved) man behind it.

Yeah, it's a short jump from social to political commentary. The symbolism could also be personal or psychological too: in the pages-of-your-diary-you-hope-no-one-reads kind of way. Either applying what's inside to what's outside, or what's outside to what's inside.

For me the biggest difference between the Bush-Era work and what came previously is the anger, and using that as a way to fight back against what oppresses you.

It's interesting that art, as a tool, plays a strong role in his social, political, and personal commentary. Trent seems to be of the opinion that the best way to fight an evil is to force it to look at itself. He's probably not wrong.

i love the broken movie but it freaks me out. it looks so fucking real. when i saw gave up jesus i almost pissed and pooped my pants.

^ And the murderer pooped on the guy's face the finger smiley

Yeah it is sick, so I had to take it in small doses to desensitize myself... starting with the video for Happiness in Slavery. Another social commenary to all of this was Trent's rage towards TVT records at the time. If I knew about this back in my high school years, it would have been much easier to misunderstand all the context behind the graphic violence, dismissing it as "demented" and "gratuitous"; I wouldn't have let myself appreciate and sympathize for Trent as someone oppressed by some record label's ridiculous control over him.

I dont normally watch horror/violence etc. but this didn't phase much me at all honestly.

I think Pinion is probably the part that will freak people, because they don't expect it.
Back a few years ago I was helping someone catalogue adult fiction for his BBS (computer bulletin board system, kind of like the internet only on a much smaller, more local scale). There were quite a lot of stories about bondage and discipline, sex in its various forms, and so forth. With some of the bondage stories, there were quite a few about people who had been made into human toilets. So, people, such stories are fairly common. The "Pinion" part of Broken didn't worry or upset me too much, there were other parts of the movie I found more distressing (if I could put it that way), eg. the rape, the man becoming fertiliser, the fly-infested dinner, to name but a few. Hope none of you are eating dinner right now!! smiling smiley

eh. the broken movie has a weird effect on me. i don't like it, but i don't hate it either.

there is alot of symbolisim in the broken movie that i find very intriguing. (yet, in a very sick and disturbing way.) for example, the flowers being fed by human flesh at the end of happines in slavery, or, well, what we've all just been refering to as "the end of pinion". (see, it still makes me cringe a little to describe it.)

is it something i want to watch everyday? hell no.
do i think it's fun to watch? not at all.

but obviously, it was made to make people wince.
it's the side brutal nine inch nails.
they were making a statement.

03/27/09 6:24 AM

Damn that's sick. Totally deleted my post lol.

I liked it and personally believe that if you can't handle this movie then you can't handle NIN.

03/27/09 6:43 AM

oh hey, you want to be disturbed and twisted go buy Faces of Death,
basically its a compilation of people dying caught on camera. Broken cant compare to the the real deal.

03/27/09 8:31 AM

I own it. I watched it. But I don't find anything appealing about the Broken Movie.

But that's just me. I'm not attracted to violence. I'm not attracted to physical pain. Emotional pain…okay. Physical, no.

You know I never watched it until now. It just didn't cross my mind until I was reading this thread earlier today... at work.. (oops, hehe)

I just don't know what to say, really. It was wonderfully filmed. The black and white scenes were beautiful, and the snuff home footage scenes made it that much more convincing that it was real.

As far as the gore goes... I knew I had started desensitizing myself to stuff like this at a young age for a reason, and this is it. I think how it effects you has a lot to do with how you watch it as well, though. How desensitized you are or your awareness of the subject matter of the film, on your computer with headphones, on HDtv with surround sound, on a 13" with a grainy VHS, in complete darkness or with lights on. Could you imagine what this would be like in the theater? IMAX? And of course, absolutely NOTHING compares to what it would be like if it were happening right in front of your fucking face.

I also think we all have some form of morbid curiosity whether we like to admit it or not. It's in our human nature, it just exists at varying degrees from person to person. There's decaying fall leaves and there's genuine snuff films and everything in between.

We can sit here and discuss Trent's motives for anything he does until the cows come home, but he has decided to shut his mind off from the rest of the world. He's like a 2 way mirror to me. He can see us, but we can't see him. The mind is an intricate and often times dark labyrinth (especially his, jesus), and even though he's changed a lot over the years, and for the better, there are certain things that just... linger... They may be just suppressed.

Surprisingly, the teeth pulling didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I cringe at the American History X curb biting scene and the one in Fight Club where Ed's character is pulling his teeth out. Maybe it's more of the sound....

Anyway, my favorite part was at the end when the rope snapped and the dust poofed everywhere.

Oh and PS- I've seen the Pinion video before.... or something like it. I just can't pinpoint where...

I haven't watched it for a long time. I didn't care for it personally but I guess it has an audience. I remember thinking that if the person being raped and tortured in the video was a woman there would have been a lot more disturbance, but somehow the fact that it was a man seemed to be ok for some people but not offensive.

it will never sink in to me that this is the same real, flesh-and-blood Trent Reznor, who now happens to own a twitter account and diligently, openly connects to his fanbase. the same guy who sang Hurt in front of millions etc. its nothing short of insane to me. these were just the first few examples that came to mind. not the best, i know

I didn't see it previously on youtube. I just watched the whole thing for the first time on youtube before I made that comment and had a deja vu moment I suppose.

i watched the broken movie and was dissapointed when i didnt hear "last." its personally my favorite. i can understand physical and suck because the are bonus songs. but can anyone explain why "last" was left out?

04/14/09 2:01 PM

I rented the Hellraiser movies 1 & 2 just to see the rotting corpse that was covered in tons of maggots falling out of it's eye & mouth. It was really fucking disgusting!!! Imagine being dead but leaving your flesh to be eaten away by maggots and bacteria! It was really fucking scary when the girl was hiding from her killer dead uncle a corpse fell out and spilled all these writhering maggots out of it's mouth onto her hand & it's amazing she didn't scream or vomit! She really did value her life because that's nasty! She would have givin away her position to be killed but she kept her cool. Pin Head was real cool though, sucks he's barely in it and is really a human!

Oh yeah! The Broken Movie, yeah Trent was a police man too so I wanted to see that, I saw all of this stuff on Nachtkabarett.com.

04/14/09 2:29 PM

I thought it was very well made, but disgusting. The gore effects were impressive

I've watched cannibal holocaust for about an hour. Its alright.

04/15/09 8:10 PM

Yeah! Also the, "I Am In Hell Help Me." hint, "Help Me I Am In Hell."

Also I couldn't help but notice when Pin Head was turning into Pin Head it looked alot like an early scene in Rammstein's, "Mein Teil" music video. Oliver was writhing on the floor and convulsing, familiar. Hmm, I rented those too just because of the NIN relations, to, "Broken." I need to become Tech Smart.

Oh no! I thought of Cannibal Holocaust too, the minute I started reading the thread. I watched the entire movie, with a pause eye popping smiley and could't eat for a whole day, which is a lot for me smiling smiley But this, of which I've seen only Happiness in slavery, Pinion, Help me I'm in hell, I think is worse. I really like pushing the boundaries but hey sometimes it's a GOOD thing to have some too the finger smiley

04/22/09 9:46 PM

I met those losers that made that cannibal holocaust and they were going to give me a copy of their poor excuse for a move for free but I didn't want it because they killed and tortured animals on set. I'm not a fucking hippie but I think that shit is wrong. So I told them off.

04/23/09 10:00 AM

Sadly I've never heard about this until now! sad smiley But I must admit, I've only started listening to NIN in the last 5 years. Oh well. Pretty screwed up, but entertaining.

04/23/09 10:23 AM

wow, i feel disfunctional..it didnt bother me at all. i liked it.

04/23/09 10:39 AM

if you had the oportunity to watch a real snuff film do you think you would do it?
like if there was some way you could know for a fact it was real.

04/23/09 10:32 PM

No. Never. The real thing would be too much. The broke movie was so very badly fake so it wasn't that bad. It reminded me of spaghetti near the end of the film.

04/28/09 11:15 AM

despite it's creepiness i think that the broken movie is a masterpiece, i also started a fan page for it on facebook because despite it's popularity in the NIN universe i'm the first one to make a fan page for it (there are also only 4 fans so far so join)

04/28/09 11:44 AM

i wonder if the broken movie will be released on a DVD along with a deluxe edition of Broken

The Broken Movie is fine because it's (duh) a movie. No one actually got hurt.
