no contest. aaron north is easily the best performer and player live.

How about we leave it at that, because as much as I love and admire the guy, there are times when Robin seems like a more skilled guitarist, but vice versa too.

Technical:Robin

Showmanship; Aaron.

Aaron was a show onto himself. I could watch the dude wreak havoc all day. And he added his own style to the songs.A trashy I don't give a fuck how it sounds attitude that I just loved. Sure not everyone dug it but I love listening to the stuff he played because instead of getting what you'd expect (like sticking to the original notes & playing it verbatim) he does his own sloppy thing.

And I loved it.

Totally agree.

But Alessandro was the best guitarist.

Robin played in GN'R.

Guns N' Roses (now) suck.

Chinese Democarcshit is shit.

Glad he left. Axl can go fuck himself until he realizes what shit he has created.

Old GN'R is fine. Back when they had there shit together.

(Sorry. I needed to get that out of my system. You should see me when i talk about Radiohead. angry smiley)

So what if he played in a shitty band. That doesn't make him the best guitarist. Ever player is different. Aaron likes to jump around. Robin likes to keep it as close to the record. I still think Alessandro was the best.

speaking of guitarists...anybody here know who played the guitar solo on "Ruiner"?

it is seriously one of the best solos ever and all credits on the album point to it being trent. is this the case?

I'm pretty sure Adrian Belew (http://www.9inchnails.com/articles/adrian-belew-and-trent-reznor.php) plays the Ruiner solo, along with the guitar at the end of The Great Below and some Ghosts stuff.

Trent played Ruiner solo. The only stuff Adrian did on TDS was in Mr Self Destruct and the fantastic solo for The Becoming.

As for best NIN guitarist, do we even need to argue this? Listen with your ears, not your eyes. Robin Finck is by far the best guitarist NIN has ever had. Far more subtle than Aaron could ever manage, more refined, more dynamic and can cut sick when he needs to. Plus he did all this while TR was a violent psychopath, something Aaron never had to worry about.

robin. i didn't feel aaron north fit in well

12/25/08 12:24 PM

Robin.. hands down.

12/25/08 6:49 PM

Definitely Aaron. He got such awesome tone and was so unique in the way way he played everything and gave it a bit more of a noisy feel. And he's obviously way more fun to watch. Oh. Not to mention his "I don't know! I don't know!" in "The Line Begins To Blur". That shit is so badass!

Robin just really doesn't do anything that stands out from any other seasoned guitar player. Being able to move your fingers fast isn't anything too different. And the stuff he does do that is pretty sweet is all stuff that Aaron did way cooler.

And Trent for sure DID do the solo in "Ruiner". I read it in an interview from the NIN bio book by Martin Huxley. It said when he was recording guitar tracks for that song, he just started jamming that solo out when that slow part of the song came in and he was doing it really jokingly/half-heartedly, but then he and whoever he was with at the time started thinking it actually fit in pretty well so they left it.

That's not the story I heard. What I heard was that Trent did it up in all seriousness but wasn't very confident in its coolness factor, mostly because he believes he's a shit guitarist. (We're our own worst critics sometimes.) Anyway, then he played it for the guys and thinking that, after the solo, they'd laugh at him, but instead they were all "Dude that's fuckin' badass."

I'm not saying Ilan is the best or even close to the best, I'm only posting this here because you guys are talking guitar and this is the most I've ever seen of him playing guitar. [is.gd] He posted it on his twitter.

Aaron North is my favorite so far.

FINCK!!! FINCK!!!! FINCK!!!! NOBODY ELSE!!!! (Except Trent of course...) Seriously, though, think about it, people. Approximately 1994/1995, Robin Finck was with NIN. Approximately 1999/2000, again with NIN. And now, 2008/2009, he's back with NIN. Surely that says something about his work? I don't think Trent would ask him back time and time again if he wasn't pleased with his work?

aaron north. i like his style of playing (not talking about the music, just how he looks like while he plays).
i always try to hold the guitar like him but it's quite difficult, it's just HIS style.

talking about how his playing sounds like, i really like how he can do "noise" on his guitar, and his solos.
also, his tremolo picking gives me the chills everytime. fucking beautiful. (in all the love in the world / home rehearsals for example).

to be honest, the performances which totally made me love him were the collector (expecially on the final part of the song) and march of the pigs from beside you in time.

03/22/09 6:28 PM

Robin Finck all the fucking way

This morning I watched a music video on vimeo comparing Robin Finck and Aaron North. It showed little clips from various things, like And All That Could Have Been, Beside You In Time, even some vintage Robin Finck which looked like it might have been pre-NIN. I was watching Robin Finck, I was awe-struck (wow he's brilliant!!) then Aaron North who sounded rather weak in comparison. So, for me, it's Robin Finck all the way!!!!

04/14/09 6:29 AM

Robin
Rich
Aaron

In that order.
