Hey everyone!

As you can see by my nickname this song is one of my favourites, BUT I have two questions about it (and please try not to cut/bite my head off)

1- What is the instrument played in the bigging of the song (yes I am refering to the fantastic "dun dun dun" )?
2- I have read in multiple sites that in the end of the song the lyrics are "take me with you home" as well as "take me if you want". Now I think the first option is the right one, but since I'm not sure, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks in advance!

I can only speculate as to the instrument however i'm going to say it's got strings and it's been synthesized (surprise surprise)
as for the lyrics... "take me if you want"
yes indeedy a good track...

The instrument at the beginning is actually a ukulele.

The lyrics at the end are just "Take me... with you."

It is such a good song... but the lyrics aren't the best.

Mark Romanek rocks by the way.

The lyrics on Rock Band are 'take me with you'... same on the NINwiki...

I kinda have a love hate thing with this song. Love it but it gets on my nerves that people talk about it not being played because of "the hardest drum solo ever recorded!LAWLZ!!DRUMMERS ARMS FALL OFF!!". Then idiots bust out stupid shit like "so the solo is too hard to play live but i can play it on Rock Band?!!" .......riiiiiiiight.

Video is wicked cool though. And sad.

I love this song.....and the video is great.....

ROCK BAND IS NOT A REAL DRUM KIT!

i love how rock band makes people think they can actually play an instrument...

like seriously, buy a drumkit, then see how hard it is.

Great song.... I think the remix Trent did for it is also outstanding and underrated (and it even seems to pay homage to the ending of "Closer" ).

Random Trivia:

He mentioned back when it came out that it took 2 weeks to write and record TPD.

The melancholic outro at the end of the song is built around the same chords as the chorus... it's just slower and it uses broken chords (similar to what he did in "We're in this Together" )

And a question:

Do you guys like the original ending he used for the LH soundtrack where the song abruptly stops or the version on H.15 where it fades out?

Oh, I just listened to the track again, my boyfriend showed it to me with only TR's voice. He obviously just says 'take me with you' but he kinda sighs in the end... In the music it just sounds like there's an extra word there, thus me thinking he said 'home'. Plus I only searched the lyrics on some random googled lyrics site, I obviously should have searched for it in NINwiki, I just didn't really think about it T____T

VigilX: I used to be really annoyed by the fact that the song ended abruptly, as you put it, but then I got so used to it, that when I started to listen to the other one, it just sounded awkward to me!

So I don't really know which one I like the best =P

Averus32 and CharmlessMan: Ok, people who actually think that rock band equals really playing an instrument, are obviously lacking intelligence. I mean camon... I actually think it's kind of easier to play an actual intrument, the game doesn't really make much sense to me, even though I like to play it... It just sin't that close to reality. Specially when you play it in easy xD Skips the beat!

Averus32: And aw xD lol

Couldn't agree more. The drum solo in the end is live as well, right?

Last I recall the drum solo in Rockband isn't even the same and about half as long and half as hard as it should be

Once I found out the story of the video,it's actually really haunting.

12/07/08 10:45 PM

I like the tempo changes and the video.

Oh how do I say this without having someone rip my head off? But it's the song I like the least. Not saying I don't like it, it's just that it has its time and place to be played

i hadn't noticed this before, because i've never liked the remix until now. i actually think his remix sounds more fitting for Lost Highway than the original, especially the "take me with you" section. the section that follows it reminds me of late 90's David Bowie industrial/jungle/drum 'n' bass experimentation, and wouldn't have sounded out of place on a record like Earthling. still, i'll take the Plug and Spacetime Continuum remixes ahead of the others every time.

you know, even though TR seemed to use that as means of disliking the song, i really think it's a testament to his ability as a composer. to write and program that beast in so short a time seems insane to me.

you mean arpeggios, yes? they're also in a lower octave, and i like them more that way grinning smiley

i've always, always preferred the fade out. the way the strings stop with the vocal and it's just the drums and piano fading out, it's so lovely and empty. i think it suits the song better, from my outsider perspective.

really????
i always thought it was "take me, if you want"

and the instrument is not a mandolin?

these lyrics are pure win.

"you make me hard when I'm all soft inside, I see the truth when I'm all stupid eyed"...

sorry. too much sarcasm. I love you, Trent, but the lyrics to this song are laughable.

that being said.. still a great fucking song.

12/31/08 4:19 PM

i'm pretty sure the instrument at the beginning is a violin or another orchestral instrument played with a pick or possibly a ukulele. i could be completely wrong but thats my guess.

I know, and it's not only the drums... it really pisses me off. -_-

edit:

I just wanted to add that I fucking love the Plug mix of TPD... <33

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo, And I Want You,ooooooooooooooooooo

Damn I love this song.

01/03/09 10:02 PM

it's a killer track. i'd like to see trent's new drummer for the next stage of the tour take a shot at playing it. seeing him in action, he could probably handle it.

don't forget that a lot of beats and other percussion are also progammed to fit around the live beats in a performace as well, so you don't need to be an octopus on ice to get away with such sounds live. maybe trent just doesn't like the song, so he can't be arsed playing it live.

as for the lyrics "take me, if you want"

and for teh record - i think rock band fucking sucks. guitar hero as well. for the price of that shit, they should go out and buy real instruments and see if they can create their own songs rather than stand there emulating someone else with a tacky plastic guitar & kit.

it's "take me with you" (see: vocal tracks from Rockband multitrack).

also, i agree with you about games like Rockband bastardizing what it means to play an instrument, but i also really appreciate the fact that it allows the multitracks of TPD, Burn, and Last to get out there for examining/remixing/anything.

01/04/09 4:09 PM

well that part is good, as we need more multitracks getting out there.

damn layering lol. just played 2 versions side by side, the original version sounds like 'take me if you want', but the plug version does indeed say 'take me with you'. well that changes things a little.

01/04/09 4:27 PM

This song is INSANELY catchy, every remix, the instrumental version, the whole package just crawls into your ears and refuses to leave! Awesome shit! the finger smiley

The video is also great! Gorgeous abstract imagery , beautifully shot and does a great job at bringing the era and personal world of Edgar Allan Poe to life (no Harry Potter associations plz!); definitely in my Top 3 NIN vids.

Well, having no previous drum related training and beating Wont Get Fooled Again & TPD on Expert, I bought a cheap drum set and played a lot of the easier songs by memory to tempo with the song playing. Now I like playing drums :p

You fail.

Any drummer NIN's ever had could play it. Trent just dislikes the song therefore - No live plays.

01/04/09 4:32 PM

Yeah, I think the reasoning behind it never being played is the fact that Trent doesn't like the song.

01/04/09 4:40 PM

Damn! sad smiley

01/04/09 9:05 PM

that's what i figured as well, as dillon and freese could have pulled it off too. i think people were expecting it to be played completely live without digital help around the edges. i only mentioned the new guy, as many people weren't too happy about the replacement. he can drum like a maniac though, so this song wouldn't be too hard for him to bash out grinning smiley

i wonder why he hates the song so much, there are others i thought he'd hate more than this one lol. unless he just spent that whole two weeks working on nothing but this one song, so by the time he was done with it, he never really wanted to hear it again.

i know i feel the same about many of my own tracks if i spend too much time on them without taking a break, or working on other ones at the same time, they tend to become less interesting for me and i end up losing all interest in them.
