hm, I've read through most of this thread and have been a little dismayed at what I've read. If trent want's to take a break I would love for him to. After all he deserves it for putting on such an amazing show and one I'll never forget. The only thing that saddens me is that I'll never be able to stand in front row and sign to him-since he knows a little bit of sign. I'm Deaf btw. I'd love for him to know that he has crossed barriers with his music and it has reached the ears of someone who is Deaf ( wears hearing aides, I can still HEAR the music!). He once said he wanted his music to trancend barriers-well, he did just that.

If trent wants to retire that is fine with me as well. He has been doing this his entire life and needs to sit back and enjoy the rest of his life. I really feel for the guy not really having a life outside of NIN.

The concert was amazing and so thank you trent for putting on such a steller show and for making music that is "real".

Your Deaf Fan,
Sheri.

If LitS comes to Europe, me and my crispy new Canon HV-30 will be there. Nothing fancy, but HD capable, should perform decently in darker areas as well. Patiently awaiting new visuals (and the fishing doc, obviously).

Our dearest Trent, In our lifetime, no single person has done for the advancement of music, the things you have done. No one has connected with fans, the way that you have connected with ALL OF US. Throughout history, whenever a great man with a great mind has tried to do great things, there have always been other men who do their best to hold that man down out of jealousy or plain ignorance. You are only partly correct about the LITS tour being the best show of the year. I, as well as the rest of your fans, believe that LITS is your masterpiece and that there has never been a show worthy of comparison. Hopefully now that you have raised the bar, in the future we might see other bands follow your lead and actually spend some time contemplating new and better ways to reach the audience. Everyone who has taken the time to actually listen to your work and your words, has had their lives changed. I now take the time to look for the beauty in things, no matter how ugly they are on the outside because you have taught me to look at more than whats on the surface if I want to fully understand something. I'm glad I got to see LITS. I have memories from that show that I will carry with me till I expire. I saw you in Philli in August and I'm still in awe. If they, who will not be named, had stood behind you all those years they would have profited greatly, but they did not. Their loss. Perhaps their interference and meddling over the years made your music what it is. Perhaps without them doing their best to hold you down, your music wouldn't have meant as much because it would have been too easy for you. Maybe thats the bright side. You have still accomplished SO much without them and despite their attempts to control you. You have struggled from the start to put the music you wanted us to hear in front of us and you have never let anyone keep you from getting that music to us in one way or another(thank you seed0). Thank you for always being true to us and to your art and for carrying it to a level that other artists will strive to reach forever. I'm hoping you are just hurt and that this isn't really goodbye. If it is, thank you for every song. Thank you for every moment. Thank you for every time I needed something or someone to help me lift my head up and found hope in your words. I cant tell you how many lives you have saved. When we feel down we put you on and there is someone there struggling just like us and it comforts us to know that we are not alone. Then the next track comes on and it's an angry track about a guy whos been hurt and now he's mad and lashing out, and wont be held down. Instatly, we're out of our hole and charging into the world daring anyone to try and keep us down or hurt us again. Thank you for never becoming another fake plastic glorified guitar stand behind a mic repeating the same chords and the same words their fans heard in 10 different songs on the radio on the way to the venue. Thank you for meaning SO MUCH to us that this post, sounding like a goodbye, has produced tears worldwide. Thank you so much Trent for everything. Thank you for you and everything that you are and everything you have done to make all of us better people. I agree with the others. Never forget that we are here for you and that when you need us all you have to do is say the word and millions of us worldwide will ALL stand behind you. We love you.

all I need to add to this: YES, I think The Slip is dumb. Thank you for helping me illustrate my point winking smiley

Ok, here goes:

What is it you don't like?

To me it feels like the sound is stripped down a lot, but the meaning isn't.

Besides, this DVD is going to kick the shit out of everything, so chill your boots, dude.

EDIT: crap, just saw you trying to get out the door!

First off, I'm starting to hate F5 angry smiley

The stuff I dont like bout The Slip? It's too commercial, too pretentious, too polished--"Discipline" ends fading out. Like The fragile is a whole uninterrupted ride from the beginning to the end; with The Slip I find myself skipping tracks tryin to find "the catchiest one", like when you buy a cd because of just one song you heard in the radio. It totally kills the experience for me n it's disappointing because I'd never expect this from a "Nine Inch Nails" record. I might as well download just the tracks that I find catchy thru limewire or youtube, as opposed to listening to the whole piece n enjoying it as a whole.

I dont hate you, I dont hate NIN. I do hate The Slip. Bye now smiling smiley

I just wanted to comment on that, if that's ok. *steps into pit*

First, The Slip is DL here...but someone pointed that out.

Second, The Slip was recorded in what was it folks...like three weeks or a little more? The Fragile...like two to three years. I leave it to you all who know the time scales. The info is out there, he's stated it in interviews.

I don't find, and this is my opinion, the Slip polished or commercial, but I don't find it a rough jumble either. I think its a good work when listened from front to back. As for being commercial...I don't see it. I actually see Echoplex (which I love) abd Discipline as raw and stripped down to the basics...then it explodes.

As for it being commercial. I don't see it. Once again that's my opinion smiling smiley. Believe it or not, The Four of Us Are Dying is my fav track on The Slip and god knows what radio station will play that?

I think every NIN album has a journey of sorts and Trent has stated before that he would rather have his work listened to from beginning to end, instead of fragmented to comprehend the whole work. Taking the journey is the fun part, understanding it is the reward...

File this one under lost opportunities. I'm very proud of the show we've put together for this tour and have been working hard the last few months to find a way to capture it. I had an amazing situation lined up that would have allowed me to film the show in 3D with James Cameron's team for a theatrical release as well as DVD / BluRay, etc. We had an extra date added to the tour that we were going to give away all the tickets for and have a filming party / thank you show.I made two critical mistakes. One was to approach a certain record company that owns some of the song rights about producing / funding. The second was to allow said company to fuck around as usual for months before saying um... no. We then achieved the impossible by finding alternate production / funding but the timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour. This tour and a lot of the personnel involved finish at the end of this leg, so we can't push filming into Jan / Feb.Deep breath...This was an amazing tour and production - certainly the best thing I've ever been involved with and likely the final tour for NIN on this scale. Thank you to those that came out to see it and forgive me for having a Kanye West moment, but this was FOR SURE the best show of the year and any bullshit end-of-the-year poll you may read in the next few weeks that says otherwise simply has it wrong. Those of you who saw it know I'm right. The shows we have announced in 2009 and any more that may be announced will be a completely different approach with some different personnel and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future.

you have to put that on dvd no so many people cant go the concerts . i know they are people to help with this for free. ill do it. we can make this possible.

i think this is a huge loss for trent, nin, and nin fans alike - its always great playing a dvd for someone who has no idea what nin actually does musically and live. are we at least going to get a bluray for this tour?

I saw the lights in the sky tour twice (toronto and hamilton) and I would like to add that at the first show in toronto i had purchased the presale seats which are direct left or right of the stage and for this stage performance it was quite a robbing experience - you miss A LOT of the "center view" experience. Hamilton I waited and just purchased seats as center as I could. I think the fan presale should include the direct center seats as well as the direct sides (those who want to be close to the performers)and the floor.

thanks for your continued efforts at reinventing yourself and your music, trent.

Where Attention Goes, Energy Flows....Trent needs to do what is best for Trent. I don't think people realize how much time and energy a tour physically takes. Not only on the performer, but those around him. Time is different for them all. Trent was given a gift and he chose to share that gift with all of us, all of these years. I too am disapointed, however, I am thankful for all the years of "therapy" the man has provided me and am thankful that after 15 years, I finally got to see Trent perform at Red Rocks. The most acustically sound place in the world. I can still feel the energy...it was an emotional show for us all. I think the whole dvd thing is a great idea....share with those who are less fortunate. I would help. i would help for free also. Its the least i could do to say "thanks dude".

And the money. With him not being signed to any label, HE is paying out a ton of money for this tour. Back to back to back means at least two crews. Crews cost money, lots of money. And the light show was ridiculous. The tecnology alone is outrageous, let alone the artistry behind the technology. And with inflation becoming worse than what it already is, its only going to start costing more. He not only needs a break from the work but also from his wallet.

This is all to true.. I cannot even imagine the cost of one show let alone the entire tour including expenses to travel. Being independant puts a lot of weight on ones shoulders and quite honestly i would completely understand if Trent needs to take some time to recover physically (Throat problems, exhaustion from the constant touring) and assess where he is finacally and how long he can keep this tour going.

I dont even know how much he has to pay out of pocket for just the power consumption costs alone that the effects and all other equipment cost per show but it has to be massive.

Wow. I just stumbled on this news. No more NIN live? To think that I missed so many shows over the past 15 years, I've been to only one during 2000 on the Fragile tour. This sucks. However as many people have pointed out, Trent's been doing thus for 20 years now and he's been relentless about it. How many bands go on tour for a year or more each time? He's changed the music scene for sure, we all know this and it's an amazing experience remixing his works (even after 3 years it still gives me goosebumps when working on mixes), dozens of songs and so many releases that I still have to invest a good chunk of money to get them all.

If there is any way NIN would come to the Milwaukee or Chicago area in 2009 one last time, I am so there. I regret not going to more shows. Kicking myself in the ass now. At least NIN hasn't gone down the road that so many bands have and just fades away into obscurity, it is almost poetic this way.

However it may turn out though NIN is top on my list of "life changing" and I would not trade that for anything so thank you Mr. Reznor for allowing that to happen.

Looking forward to everything else you have to offer whatever that may be.

12/06/08 11:08 AM

I think we should all pitch in and buy all of Trent's songs back from Interscope and tell them to shove it.

Oh, brother.

Do you just want Trent to tour endlessly while making 45 minute albums for the rest of his life? The man has been touring since mid-2005 with only month-long stops... He's talking about taking a break from touring, a break that to his former standards should've happened a long time ago. The news he broke to us was all about DVD/production/touring, NOT about Nine Inch Nails ending...

I personally am all for him taking a nice break (1-2 years), and then get back in light with a nice, long, fleshed-out masterpiece (that isn't Year Zero pt.2). Who here wouldn't want that?

I wasn't saying that touring incessantly was the only thing that would make me happy. Of course the man deserves a break. But I'm allowed to be sad that I won't have another opportunity to see him for the "foreseeable future".
