I was at a Sorority House last night. From upstairs I hear some muffled music that sounded familiar, but I couldn't make it out. But then I heard an unmistakable chain of words. "You let me violate you" Being a bit too drunk I flipped shit and went upstairs and started dancing.

Definitely made my night. I looked for more NIN songs on the computer, but all they had was Closer, unfortunately.

I feel people over analyze "Ruiner" way too much.

04/29/11 2:49 PM

^ i really think you should expand on that.

04/29/11 5:38 PM

To me, the song just sounds like someone close to him pushed him away because he "ruins everything", and in the chorus when he's screaming, he's using that person's own words against them, e.g. "The Ruiner ruins everything he sees".

I don't dislike any nin or htda songs. everyone seems to compare trent to trent. when you are 22 years old, you are not the same person you were when you were 8. things change, people change. nin and htda are way better than anything played on radio today. i buy all trent's music in the store. i believe he is worth my hard earned money, and i support him, nin and htda need to be kept in business or all we're gonna hear in the future is ga ga and ke$ha. ( and you don't want your children's children to grow up on that, do you?)

The Gentle Hum of Anxiety reminds me of La Mer.

Hey, has anyone heard of the electro group called Starfucker? They have two albums: Starfucker and Reptilians. I looked it up, but I can't find any mention of NIN being an influence of theirs.

well, from a while i´ve been wondering if NIN is really an "industrial" band. i reckon trent likes that music but that´s not enough reason to put NIN into that lot. i tend to think about NIN as an ENHANCED hard rock band that relies heavily on computers and synths.

YZ is a dystopian album. its the closest to "industrial" music. but you see, it kicks in with hyperpower! an obvious rocking song.

on TS i see the brew clearer. half the album has this raw rocking feel, the other is quieter and synth'd, and it ends with a good mix of both: demon seed.

just a thought.

The closest album to Industrial was TDS, but the only song NIN has that is really industrial is Theme for Tetsuo, imo

Trent explains it pretty well here: [www.youtube.com]

yeah, i mean, it's hard to define what music you do as an artist, and it's harder to clasify it along the popular music themes, specially when they are created in order to segment the audience.
the question posed to trent is very hard to confront, and the answer given to it by most artists don't differ: i just do music. rare it would be if trent said, yeah what we do is industrial-
i myself play piano and compose my own stuff. it's the blind spot of the author. but you see, among the several influences you have, when you create you tend to oscilate between them.
it's like when you ask a writer. clever interviewers don't ask "what literary movement influences you the most" and certainly NEVER will ask "are you a surrealist?" but "what writers do you like; or what do you think about the contemporary /young generation of writers" which leaves open season for us.
i like interviews when trent speaks about music in general (in his particular tone of comments), that's when he gives coordinates about his own music.

thanks for the link BTW

You're welcome.

I'm loving the fan remixes that came out of TSN soundtrack.

I'm assuming this might not go anywhere, but I'm interested in contacting Trent for an interview on my site. I tried to do this through Nasty Little Man but they informed me they are not covering anything for him at this time. Does anyone have any suggestions how to go about contacting him for an interview?

05/27/11 1:48 PM

Nasty Little Man only cover their live stuff afaik, try [www.rebelwaltz.com]

But there is so little chance you will get an interview.

Thank you. I understand the likelihood of my getting an interview is slim to non-existent, but if I don't try there is no chance.

I haven't listened to any NIN in close to 2 months.

Whoa

No worries - and remember, if you do manage it, don't mention Tapeworm.

Has anyone actually tried to pick his brain about Tapeworm? I don't recall having read any angry responses from him about it. I'm specifically interested in the Nothing Records story and details about the label's artists and successes. That said, I'd still love to see Tapeworm get released. I don't really buy his statement that it would've come out had it been good. I'm sure there were plenty of other issues at hand, especially with labels and such.

05/27/11 5:10 PM

People ask him about tapeworm all the fucking time, and he has said time and time again that it is dead. If you manage to get to interview stage, don't waste your time asking. Hell, there's a list of "stupid questions to stop asking trent" on my hard drive so I can copy/paste whenever someone asks.

The reason tapeworm didn't happen, from what everyone has said, is that Trent's "side" and Maynard's "side" couldn't agree on what to do, and what came out was something neither wanted. I'm sure it's awesome, but I'm equally sure it won't be released unless Interscope find it and decide to release it anyway as some rip-off rarities disc.

Don't forget that it wasn't only him that ran Nothing though, and whilst he probably doesn't even recognise John Malm's existence, if you want information on it, Malm would be an interesting person to ask.

Even though a couple of years have passed, I still find it rather incomprehensible that people would've had the audacity to interrupt Hurt like that. Of course it's not always going to be everybody's favorite, but it's just that messed up to me.

All good points. I considered attempting to contact Malm but I've heard he's a notorious schmuck. Still, he's in Ohio, right? Might be a possibility.

Malm is quite the dickhead, but if you want to know about Nothing, he was the only sober man involved, so the only one with a good memory (although his interpretation of facts is a bit liberal). Good luck with it though, and whatever you find, please post here!

No doubt! If it happens I'll make sure folks know about it. I try to get lots of interviews for my site but it usually doesn't happen, but when it does I try to make it nice and legitimate. I'm the guy who did the R.U. Sirius/Mondo Vanilli interview recently. I don't wanna pester Trent or anyone, I just want to ask some questions I don't think have been asked before.

By the way, I did send an e-mail to Rebel Waltz and I tweeted Trent, though I don't expect responses from either. That said, who knows? It'd be very cool if someone responded about setting an interview up, and I'll be as up front as they want me to be, but from past experience I have to agree that the likelihood of it happening is extremely slim.

I just wish Broken would've come out on DVD already, but that just isn't happening.

Shockingly, I got a response from Rebel Waltz, although they told me to write Steve at Nasty Little Man, although he was very polite and responded quickly. He said it probably won't happen but he'd be happy to pass some examples of the types of questions I'd be asking on to Trent for his potential approval.

Also got in touch with Malm's people. They were very nice and said he might be interested in doing an interview about Nothing. I just read John's interview over at luckyPRICK and he seemed very nice so who knows. I'll let people know when I know.

Good luck to you, I really am interested in hearing about some of this
