I just noticed that the rope on the cover of further down the spiral looks like it has blood on it. Never really looked that closely at it before.

Not sure if directly NIN related, but I picked up the TGWTDT blu ray today.

Dear Trent Reznor, I'm writing to you here because I couldn't find your email address on teh webs. I would like to say that I find your music strangely beautiful but your lyrics could use some work. I like Hurt because songs about people using heroine seem to be some of the best. Head like a hole would be alright but it should be God or money not god money. Bowing down to money is like bowing down to some video game score just to have the computer reboot and not save what you've done. Money is about a fleeting thing as you can find and it is sad that it causes so much suffering in the world. Bowing down to Jesus on the other hand keeps be from getting what I deserve and instead gets me what he desereved when He died on the cross for my sins, the Endless Love of the Living God. I wanted to say that I'm not worried about how to destroy angels because the devil has already made the ones fall that he could and they are held in chains under the earth awaiting Gods judgement. I'm not worried about the devil because he can't escape Gods wrath and is no match for the Creator of the universe. He touched my danger zone. I'm in my dark place. I have found that when I'm in darkness it helps to ask Jesus to light it up. I've broke apart my insides. It helps to know that there is One who can mend our broken hearts. And when I'm feeling hellish torment it is awesome to ask the Lord Jesus for mercy and escape. I in closing I would like to say I'm a fanatic. You can guess Who's. Have a Good One brothes and sisters, Tony Roberston-Jesus Freak. P.S. I thought it was hilarious when you told them to steal all music. Find me a copy write law in the Bible.

WTF!? Seriously, if i was a multimillion dollar selling artist, even in my private mansion with ultra expensive security measures, i would feel afraid for my life after reading this post...

Not sure where to post this but.. has anyone seen the new NBC show Awake? The score for this show, which I believe is original for the series, sounds incredibly similar to some of Trent and Atticus' recent scores.

Anyone agree? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3XDKONyhpA

I know they didn't create it, and I'm not saying it is a rip-off or anything, just curious if anyone else thinks it sounds like something Trent could have made.

I was just listening to the BYIT version of Gave Up, and I just realized, you know what'd work really well yet unexpectedly in that song and make it twice as cool? A harmonica solo towards the end part through the whole "throw it away" section. I know it sounds strange, but trust me on this.

04/14/12 3:02 AM

Oddly, while filling up my kettle this morning, the sound brought to mind the intro to And All That Could Have Been, before the music kicks in.

Trent's use of kitchen implements to create music is not without precedent though. I still remember listening to Sunspots and becoming convinced that the sounds between 2.29 - 2.46, and the rest of the song really, are just him changing the speed on an electronic whisk....smiling smiley

Does anyone else Click the "Tour" button and hope to see some dates?

04/25/12 3:51 PM

No.

04/25/12 4:01 PM

What's the point, really? If new NIN shows were to be announced, it will have been long enough to be considered major news and would make it onto the home-page.

04/26/12 3:45 PM

Honestly? I'd rather Trent was in the studio, or writing, or taking the time out to have a personal life. A show's just for one night, a new song's forever.

Jesus I've been writing some horrible shit on these boards lately...

Just watching The Slip rehearsal disc for the gazillionth time - great bit of work. Anyway, I just love the look Trent gives Robin as he's about to start singing the song, like they had a row 5 seconds before they started filming..! And not just one 'eat shit' look, but two!

On a side note, does anyone know whether they recorded any of the other songs in that rehearsal setting, but they never made it onto the disc? I know due to the nature of the songs it might have been a little more difficult to recreate say Corona/Demon Seed.

Due to the fact they were recorded over a few days, I'd say probably not - although I wish the DVD had been the full album live, that would make a great deluxe edition extra for any future albums (hint hint Trent)

I agree - with Metallica's St Anger, the bonus DVD was the main redeeming feature of that release!

^ the Metallica example is quite funny, though (besides it being awful all around) — back when i bought it and enjoyed it, i thought the rehearsal mix sounded better!

as for The Slip, it seems likely they were culled from the actual tour rehearsals, which means they only rehearsed what was going to be played for sure — the rest of the footage/recordings would be of non-Slip material.

Personally I liked the studio DVD, except for Invisible Kid. What an abomination of a song that was! But that DVD and the Some Kind of Monster film were the best things to come out of that period imo.

I see what you say about The Slip DVD, just gutted no Lights In The Sky in particular - which did get played a few times on the 2 subsequent tours.

I made a spotify playlist of the originals of the songs that NIN's covered, either live or studio.
I probably forgot some, but if anyone's interested:
[open.spotify.com]

NB: Led Zep aren't on Spotify, the link for Immigrant Song won't work unless you have the track too.

…i hope any new NIN material has lyrics this time around. for so many years i looked forward to completely instrumental work and now that we were given that i realize how much i miss his lyrics. instrumental music can be visual but lyrics and words add a whole new dimension and solidify the sound and substance of it. at least to me it does
anyways...

Fairly sure this'll be the case, instinctively.

After 7 years i finally found a meaning in The Hand That Feeds. Well my own interpatation anyway. To me the song is simply about having the choice to stop or catch yourself when something has gone too far such as a drug addiction. "will you bite the hand that feeds you .... " Will you take control of yourself even if it means you may suffer briefly ?

You know, I noticed an interesting coincidence in The Fragile. Keeping up with the whole theme of "things falling apart", The Fragile seems, at least to me, to capture the decay of Trent's voice after so much touring more so than any other NIN album. Towards the beginning of the album in tracks like TDTWWA he sounds closer to the way he sounded in The Downward Spiral. Towards the end though in tracks like The Big Come Down, his vocal tonality has shifted and as he's yelling sounds closer to With Teeth.

At least, sounds like that to me. Kind of interesting, especially since I know these songs were not listed on the album in chronological order.

i think you might be observing something true, but as it was intended - "The Big Come Down" is supposed to sound broken and desperate.

if it were simply the results of gruelling touring, "We're in This Together" would be the prime example as one of the last completed tracks (and one which took a lot of work to get right), yet it is the fifth track on the first disc of the album.

This supercute young girl I work with came up to me today, pointed at my NIN-Hoodie and said: "Where did you get that Hoodie from? I know that band! They're good."
Totally random I know, but NIN isn't that well known in Switzerland, so to find out that I actually work with someone who knows (and likes) them made me happier than it probably should have eye rolling smiley smoking smiley
