I believe you know the drill..

I'll start:
The most recent Down In It live feels like it was recorded just yesterday. I really like the way it sounds.

Still waiting for the Light in the Sky over Vienna. smiling smiley

Btw., "1,000,000" has so much win.

I love the beginning they have put on it since forever ago. I wish that would have been on the album version.

Well:
Video (most of it) [nin.ro]
and
Bootleg - Duluth, GA, Gwinnett Arena [nin.ro]

I hope those don't fall under "leaked materials".. if so I will remove them.

There is a lot of NIN work that catches a lot of shit from NIN fans and it seems to be the same ones over and over.

For example, The Perfect Drug, Starfuckers Inc., Deep and indeed the entire With Teeth album seem to catch a lot of shit from fans and except for maybe Deep I can't really understand it. With Teeth is my second favorite NIN album and I like it pretty much all the way through. The Perfect Drug, meanwhile, is one of my favorite NIN tunes, though probably not top 10. It saddens me a bit that Trent seems pretty disappointed with it.

So what gives? Either explain why you don't like these ones, or stand up for 'em if you do. I suppose this goes for PHM-bashers too.

awitha teetha was the first nin record I bought and my friend told me the fans didn't love it. I liked it but really got into nin because of Year Zero.
With teeth is more of a "rock" record, it's been growing on me, I discovered Sunspots, like, one month ago, I didn't like it at first.
There's something special about this record, it doesn't feel like it's the same Nine Inch Nails as in the Fragile or the Slip. That's how I feel it when I listen to the record.

08/17/08 2:02 PM

Im one of the With Teeth haters. The Fragile was such an amzing record, and after 5 years, to hear there was a new NIN I got really excited. But then With Teeth came out. I know he went through alot of changes, but With Teeth doesn't compare to The Fragile, imo. Theres only a few songs on it I can stnad, but I never put it in.
On the other hand, The Perfect Drug is one of my favorite NIN tracks;Starfuckers is my least favorite on The Fragile; and I dont really hate or love Deep.

08/17/08 1:13 PM

With Teeth got me into NIN, and it remains a favorite of mine. It has a little pop sensibility, and I can understand how coming after The Fragile it would seem a little weak. But there's a lot of great songs there and NIN's rock side sort of needed to show up again. Only is possibly my favorite NIN song ever, and when Robin is playing the intro it sounds amazing live too.

I like Perfect Drug a lot, I don't like Starfuckers (it kills the flow of The Fragile imo) anymore, and I like Deep. Hell, the Deep video is one of my favorite NIN videos, and I know most people hate it but I enjoy it. It's kinda funny, and NIN could do with a touch of humor.

08/17/08 2:15 PM

I understand why people don't like With Teeth. It's by the far the most "normal" rock record he's produced. I really like it qand enjoy it for what it is but if you listen to it expecting to hear TDS or the Fragile then it's going to disappoint.

08/17/08 2:22 PM

I love With Teeth personally, but I can see why many NIN fans would hate on it. It is easily the most accessable NIN album imo, based on non-nin-fan friends generally liking it versus all of the other albums. It's accessability comes from, I think, it sounding more like a traditional rock album.

I had never really heard much hating on "The Perfect Drug". "Deep" is a song I also like despite many a fan hatred. I mean, it's not the best NIN song but it's not the worst. I've never understood the hate on that either.

As for "Starfuckers, Inc." I could take it or leave it. I liked the track a lot when I first started listening to The Fragile but now I usually skip it.

08/17/08 1:26 PM

I really dont like Deep. It sounds to me somehow interupted, I cannot get into that. But the video is indeed kind of funny. grinning smiley

But thats all, Starfuckers and The Perfect Drug are both not my favorites, but im ok with them. Oh, I completely hate the video for The Perfect Drug, I nearly cannot watch it.

I like With Teeth.

08/17/08 1:29 PM

yea with_teeth sounds like such a "regular" album for NIN, not as complex as say The Fragile for example but i like it, not my favorite but it has its moments smiling smiley

i personally like the song "deep" but i can do without the video.

starfuckers inc. doesnt fit into the fragile though, i've never been able to place it correctly into ANY context of the album but i liked it alot when i first heard it

theres really nothing i can say i dont like about NIN, EXCEPT for when Trent first got really buff and his voice starting sucking and he couldnt "sing" good...but he's honed that skill and i love his voice now
i still prefer his voice on the fragile tho smiling smiley

08/17/08 1:32 PM

Starfuckers only irritates me because it's overplayed...ditto with Closer. Also, I agree in saying with_teeth was rather a shock after something as profound as The Fragile.

08/17/08 2:36 PM

I can at least see where people might be coming from with With Teeth. The Fragile is my favorite record ever, NIN or otherwise. It's fucking brilliant and I can understand why people would be a little let down with a bit more of a pop-oriented record after a five year wait. That said, pop does not necessarily equal bad in my book. It all depends on execution and if WT is a pop record, it's one of the best ones I've ever heard.

Although I can't see how you can call songs like All The Love In The World or Beside You In Time pop

08/17/08 2:39 PM

I remember watching MTV and seeing the video for "Only" and going whooo the fuck is this..and seeing it was NIN and running to my nearest Music store and buying With Teeth. I ofcourse subsequently replaced my Casettes with CD's and have a full on NIN collection. Year Zero and The Slip have blown me away

I think people don't like With teeth because its too "Radio friendly"... But hey more NIN on the radio is not a bad thing!!! I keep hearing the same two songs over and over (Closer and HLAH)

I,however, do not like the song "Suck" and "Down in it".Plus I just also got into "Sunspots" as of late--the hook is just too much.

I don't know, it just seems like people have to hate on something. There is something for everyone & I've never quite understood the whole "doesn't meet my expectations" deal. I don't harbor any expectations. I look at each new album as just that, something new. No track has ever not sounded like NIN, so I don't know what the problem is; they're just different.

As for the usual suspects: I love "Deep," great lyrics. "The Perfect Drug" means a lot more to me than it probably should, but so does Lost Highway. It was just the time in my life. With Teeth might lean towards pop more, but the title track kills. It's strong & I really think it is the one piece that showcases the transition from The Fragile to the WT era, both lyrically & musically.

08/17/08 4:58 PM

i love Deep
i love TPD
i HATE Starfuckers...it just, feels so not Trent, and also, the song itself is just annoying, starfuckers over and over again on the same riff over and over again just wasnt doing it for me...

I dont understand why people dont like Not So Pretty Now, sure the lyrics are meh, and the tune is poppy, but i still like it

08/17/08 5:07 PM

I like Deep, I like TPD, I like WT very much actually and I like Starfuckers Inc. too.

I even like Not So Pretty Now! Damn I'd love to hear a studio version of it.

08/17/08 7:00 PM

I don't understand why people hate Deep, I think it's a pretty good song. And I've never heard of people hating The Perfect Drug, but I think it's great. Even though [WITH_TEETH] does have a couple of tracks on it that aren't that good, to me The Hand That Feeds and Only are meh, it's still a great album. And Every Day is Exactly the Same is an awesome song, although I can see why people don't like it. And although Pretty Hate Machine does sound a little dated and does have my least favourite NIN songs on there, it still isn't bad. And I love Starfuckers, but it doesn't really fit the mood of The Fragile at all, it should have stuck as a The Day the World Went Away b-side.

08/17/08 7:17 PM

I adore With Teeth, but that's probably because it's what made me a fan. It's my favorite by default.

I really just love almost everything, including all the stuff you mentioned. *shrugs* I'm no hater. tongue sticking out smiley

08/17/08 7:19 PM

I can't stand starfuckers mainly because I just really don't find it satisfying musically, just not a good song imo. TPD I don't like that much either because I just don't enjoy listening to it, I don't know what I don't like about those two...just plain don't like them!
Love a bit of Deep and WT though smiling smiley Also like Not So Pretty Now.

i might catch flack for this, but it's just what i notice, so take it with a grain of salt. we all like different kinds of nin sounds/eras, maybe it depends on when we started listening. i saw nin in 90, so i started with PHM. for example, i'm not a huge fan of The Fragile. i don't hate it necessarily, i just don't care for it all that much, where as it seems it is the favorite album of half of fans. maybe i'm just not that deep, music-wise. it's a bit depressing to me, it reminds me of death in a nutshell. i'm more of a fan of the harder/beat driven/electronic sound vs. slow/mellow/piano heavy stuff. i like screaming Trent more than i like whispery Trent most of the time. don't get me wrong, i like some of the more mellow stuff, it's just not my first choice to listen to. one person's favorite is always going to be another person's most hated. a good beat wins me over every time. it's just personal preference.

ETA- i love the Ghosts album. mellow at it's finest. i've seen many people pan it. i don't get it.

I've learned over time it's best to pick things that you like about something and ignore others who dislike it. Like what YOU like because YOU like it. I have no problem listening to PHM, and I have no problem listening to with teeth. Learn to find what you love about the different albums/eras and stick to your guns.

And also, I never got why people dislike the Ghost album. It's great to just chill to. But hey, to each his own. =]

08/17/08 11:26 PM

I love all of the songs. I'll have to say the one song that took me forever to get into was The Wretched.

08/17/08 11:31 PM

[rant]

why oh why do people hate memorabilia? i would always skip it for the longest time, but never actually listened to it, and once i did, and listened to the original soft cell version, thought its a nifty little cover and trent really turned it from a bad, bad song into something really interesting

[/rant]

08/17/08 11:59 PM

It's the same reason any other fan base has a general distaste for any other given album/song.

Just kind of happens. The fans often feel similarly, I imagine.
