No DVD. He needs to get permission from his old label to put out out a DVD because they own the the rights to the majority of his music.
In case you hadn't read my previous speculatory expose-I'll just elaborate here and use some quotes from Trent's post.
Here's the part about the approaching of the company:
posted:approach a certain record company that owns some of the song rights about producing / funding
They do
own some of the song rights, but the main reason for them being approached was
producing/funding. Also, if they had said yes, it would have made securing the song rights
easier since the company producing the DVD actually owns them.
Here's the next notable part:
posted:We then achieved the impossible by finding alternate production / funding but the timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour.
As I mentioned previously I am guessing that this alternate production/funding would have, or
does cover securing the song rights. The one universal principle in this world seems to be that
money talks. So if Trent managed to scrounge up the funds to purchase the rights to his own friggin' songs so he could make the DVD, then that's GREAT.
He never said the record company refused to give him the song rights, he merely mentioned that the "certain company" incidentally happened to own them. I do suppose he made a poor choice of words because it can be easily misconstrued.
Anyway, I'm sick of people just assuming that the DVD is impossible because they misinterpreted Trent's news post (although it is possible they were saying no to the song rights as well-I'm more inclined to believe Trent was referring to the funding/production of the DVD project specifically).
Anyway, that's hopefully the end of my little rant on that subject.
I have to say that no matter what the gift turns out to be, it'll probably be awesome-unless it's an iphone/ipod touch app or wallpaper package like someone just speculated. I mean, c'mon-a wallpaper package!! Don't we already have LitS wallpaper anyway? If we want to have images from the tour made into wallpaper can't we do that ourselves? Sure, we're making a LitS DVD ourselves, but that's rather tricky to do and has 0 chance of equaling up to the quality of a potential official release (although granted it does have it's own special qualities since it's a fan project-I'm not trying to put it down or anything).
Anyway, it doesn't matter exactly because Trent's already given us so much already, this will be just one last decoration to add to the 2008 NIN X-Mas Tree.
