My first post here.

I first got into Nine Inch Nails when TF came out. My friend bought TF because we had heard it was the new album by the dude that produced ACSS for Manson. I was in grade nine at the time, and we thought TF was such a great record. Now, it sits somewhere in the middle of my favourite nin albums but it was such a mindblowing album for me when I first got it.

nin has since been one of my favourite bands, and liking nin also opened me up to a lot of other new music.

i remember listening to pretty hate machine at a friends house when i was like 13, thus starting my love for NIN

It was probably 2000 when I bought TDS. I can't remember exactly how I heard about that album, but I recognized the name while browsing records and picked it up. Not long after that I got the Fragile and was completely obsessed with NIN for quite a while. I'm maybe not a super-fan anymore. I think it's more respect and admiration for a fellow musician.

1994-1995 was rough years luckily when the system sucked me out of the house there was a Nailhead on the other side of my bedroom named Dustin G... I had th3 pleasure of listening to Nin and Manson and every other underground band back in the day and have never turned cheek/regretted loving NIN

1992- I had a PHM tape playing in the background of a skanky old bunk-hut, loads of guys and girls, loads of booze, someone put a load of hash on our heater and filled the room with smoke, everything went really out there.
The tape was playing over and over, it was the first time I cheated on a girl (nothing I'm proud of), and I can't remember thinking it was wrong at the time. I was 17.
Heady night.
The soon to be ex bought me 'Broken' as a parting gift.

Down IN it

The very first time I heard of NIN was way, WAY back in my childhood, but it was just passively over the TV. I think the song was "Closer", but I'm not sure.

A few years later when I was roughly 15, I heard "The Hand That Feeds", on the radio. At first, I thought "What a fucking terrible band, this music is really shitty, don't know why this is considered good at all". And I kept that same mentality for a good while.

But for some reason, I saw "Only" during an MTV music show, and I actually figured "What the hell, maybe I'll listen to what the guy is saying". So I did, and I was blown away at the music video itself, and the music itself. I kid you not, that song was stuck in my head for an entire year before I eventually got "With Teeth". With Teeth was my first NIN album, and "All The Love In The World" was my first foray into a full record. All The Love In The World is one of the songs in the NIN catalog that still sounds "new" to me when I give it a go.

Fast forward 4 years later. I have all 8 albums, 2 EP's, Beside You In Time DVD, NINJA EP, and attended the 2008 LITS concert in Iowa, which was also my first concert ever. grinning smiley

I heard NIN for the first time in 1994, the song was "Closer". I loved that song and decided to buy the Downward Spiral album. I never regretted it.

well i bought a copy of PHM at a flea market for about 5 bucks in like 2005 and i was young...ill admit i didnt much care for it at first and then a year or so later, i see a music video for "only" and i buy With_Teeth and i get back into NIN and then i go see LITS tour...and now all i listen to is NIN. now PHM is one of my fav NIN albums.

My friends were into NIN before I was, so I had heard them plenty of times before becoming a fan. Until I heard Year Zero in 2007, I didn't really care for them. At the time, I wasn't at a place where I could appreciate what Trent was saying with the music, so I just listened to it the same way you would listen to radio static. After maturing a bit and hearing something like "Another Version Of The Truth" (I know, not the best instrumental example), I began to think "Hmmm. Maybe I'm missing something here." I listened to Year Zero completely and fell in love with it. Soon after falling in love with that album, Ghosts I-IV was released and from then on I was hooked. Since those two albums and The Slip, I've been working my way backwards and focusing on each album and what I like (and occasionally dislike) about them. I've really grown as a fan and learned to appreciate pretty much everything that has been released by NIN.

Back in 1993, some friends of mine that did Rocky Horror with me (who were older) put on Broken for me. It totally rocked my socks.

I became a die hard fan in 1994 when TDS came out. Some other friends and I got it on release day and listened to it all the way through.

Been hooked ever since.

05/01/09 9:49 PM

When I was like 2 and the vid for closer came out...i remember watching it when i was that young = )

05/02/09 1:20 AM

^ really? I don't remember what happened when I was two... I remember when I was three though, probably because I moved and broke my leg that year.

I first heard them when I was nine. The people who used to live in our house left a bunch of shit here and there was a box labeled "90's" with clothes and some random shit. TDS was in there and I listened to it and I got that good feeling, but rejected it because of the content/swearing. I was like WTF? I can't remember when but much later when I started to get into music, I don't know how it happened but I listened to it a couple more times. Then when we got a computer I think the first song i put on was survivalism...

05/03/09 9:49 AM

I was either 2 or 3, but yeah, niether do I, except for certain things...and i guess that includes NIN! Lol.

05/03/09 9:53 AM

I first heard 'Right Where It Belong' in a video in 2006 or 2007... I didn't get hooked on it immediately though. Some time later, I checked out their Myspace and played 'Every Day Is Exactly The Same' (I could relate to it really well) plus some other songs (In This Twilight, Survivalism, Me, I'm Not) from Year Zero, and I got hooked. smiling smiley

05/03/09 9:59 AM

I was 8/9 (in 1994) when I hear Closer and see the end of the video...I was like "eh! He's a flying man!" And then, when I hear the song in my childood I always said "This is the flying man!" And more recently...I was 17, I think, when a friend of mine make me discovered NIN and when I saw the video of closer I just look at it and said "God, the flying man! It's Trent!" And my friend just looked at me like I was insane and just ask my "what? The flying man?"
But at last I don't even remember the first NIN song I hear when I was 17.(now I'm 20)

If you wanna get technical with it... Before I was born. My mom listened to NIN so much from Jan-Oct '90 (and on) that I developed a love for the music at a very young age. At 3 years old, I could sing every song from Pretty Hate Machine! grinning smiley

I used to borrow CDs from my older sister, and I borrowed PHM and WT. I listened to "Head Like a Hole" first, then "Sin." Sin freaking GOT ME. I was like, "whoa! What is this!" Then, on WT, "The Hand That Feeds" and "Love is Not Enough" sealed the freaking deal. I heard "Closer" a while later. I bought "Year Zero" ASAP. Since then, I've been hooked.

05/22/09 7:29 PM

Sometime in the early 90s. Wish came on mtv in the middle of the night and I thought: well, that's different.

05/22/09 11:26 PM

LOL, I heard them on KROQ (Los Angles) back in 1990 I believe, I went to Music + & got the Pretty Hate Cassette & the rest is history...damn I'm getting old!

In 1989, my friend who worked at a Tower Records handed me PHM and swore it would change everything.

From the first note of Head Like A Hole, I was blown away! I was 21 at the time. God, has it really been 20 years already?!

Finally had a chance to see NIN on the 1st Lollapalooza tour- ironically in Irvine. So attending the May 20th show was an excellent way to come full circle.

I'm loving reading all these posts, keep em up!

05/23/09 3:40 AM

The first time I heard NIN was in 2005. "Only" came on TV, and I thought "Cool video... good song." I didn't think much of it. But then "The Slip" came out last year, and I loved it so much that I couldn't help but listen to all the older albums. I can't believe I didn't get into NIN sooner. Well I guess I was young and preferred more "pop" sounding music back then... but still, I wish I got into them sooner sad smiley

Oh and do video games count? Since Trent worked on the music and sound effects for Quake, then I must've first heard them around 10 years ago. I knew that NIN logo I saw in CD stores looked familiar... aww damn I gotta play Quake now tongue sticking out smiley
