Well, time for a break ? I understand Reznor and really think that he has made the right decision. Why ?
First, everything that needed to be done has been done. Just take a look at :
- how many albums have been released, especially in the past years...;
- how many tours and dates have been done since the beginning (and most of these implied really much more thant what you only need to play music).
But audience hungry for more. Even if I understand this, I would like to remind that... that the more you eat, the more you want to eat. Is it hunger, habits, dependence? ;o)
Going further, try to consider all that have been done since Reznor left traditional music industry. We've got here one ( and maybe "the" ) of the most efficient new model in musical diffusion ever created. But all of this requires a lot of time and still more energy. You just can't put more hours in a day than the defining 24 ones. And when the experience comes to reach the point where you can't go further whithout a clear market revolution, all you can do is wait for changes that do not only regard your activities : economic prudence from partners that crashes great projects, customers habits which take a long time to change, ... So for a undetermined period, you just do anything exciting but only... wait.
Anf the comes the internet. That's ok, and this website uses all that's possible to use. For instance, there are so many videos that no one will ever be able to watch them all. And NIN's audience is not the last to permanently search for more or produce stuff. We got videos, hidden websites, remixes, artworks, pictures, papers, buzz facts, community, RSS feeds, facebook, blablabla... and maybe the only man able to compete with Renor in such a communication proven tool is Barack Obama. But... once again, can Trent spend all his days on it, creating waves, labyrinths, in a web 2.0 that seems happy with it's own content today ? Surely not, and new approaches for the web will also take time to appear...
For any compulsive artist, waiting means nothing but stop. Stopping for a while, getting closer to own inspirations, giving a chance to emergency or self-pleasure in creation and less elaborated or more spontaneous performances. That's exactly what he says, and I totally endorse it.
Welcome back to you Mister Reznor ! ;o)
