I'm dragging one of my friends to the 6/06 show in NJ (I can't even put words to how excited I am. I'm burning him a CD so that he won't be completely out of the loop when Trent in the boys come out. What do you think I should put on it?

03/16/09 5:27 PM

Scare him a little and give him some Jonas Brothers or something!

haha!

I think you should just mix it up with some loud songs (Starfuckers Inc, Wish, Mr. Self Destruct, March of the Pigs), some quiet songs (The Fragile, Hurt, Right Where it Belongs, Something I Can Never Have), some instrumentals (any of your favorite Ghosts, A Warm Place, The Frail, La Mer), and some popular ones (Closer, Head Like a Hole, The Hand That Feeds, Survivalism). Just mix it up and show him how diverse NIN is.

FireFerret, i fucking love your avatar.

Put the popular songs with other unpopular great songs such as The Line BEgins To Blur, or even live versions like the Big Come Down.

03/17/09 1:11 PM

Tell him to download The Slip and burn him a copy of The Fragile. I think that would give him a good dose of old and new NIN, some of the older NIN albums (Broken, TDS) sometimes are too rough and aggressive for many new NIN listeners. I know I didn't like TDS when I first heard it, but it grew on me significantly.

03/17/09 1:26 PM

just the Definitive NIN: The Singles playlist.

03/17/09 2:51 PM

With Teeth is pretty much the "NIN Beginner's Album" in my book. Not his best, but a good healthy dose of what TR's like.

Better yet, send him to Chris Cornell's MySpace and make him sit through Scream. thumbs up

My intro to NIN was through AATCHB (although this was before WT had come out), which I thought both gave me a great overview of the different albums and toned down the "dated" feeling that PHM tracks can get. You could also go the Definitive route at this point, as others have said-- whichever has the material you think your friend would enjoy most.

03/19/09 5:13 PM

Make him a copy of closure... so he can watch videos and listen to music... And let me know his reaction to "happiness in slavery" I love showing that video to people LOL

agreed, also with teeth is definately the most mainstream of all his albums, it's the album that got me hooked

Look at the set lists from the last bunch of shows and cherry pick songs from there.

Yeah, that's probably true. I didn't know what to make of NIN's older stuff when I first heard it, but With Teeth I could relate too.

I recommend starting off with The Fragile and With Teeth. Once he hooked on it (and he WILL!) tell him to download The Slip so he can discover it for himself. I would also recommend stuff from Year Zero, but they're a bit "visionary" for a beginner. For slower stuff, I would recommend La Mer, adrift and at peace, The Frail, Something I can never have, somewhere I belong, ligths in the sky, Hurt, not sure about Ghosts though, I guess it's good if he's like instrumental stuff. Maybe some remixes too. My sister got into NIN by hearing me play Everyday is Exactly the Same Sam Fog and Carlos D remix and The Hand that Feeds DFA remix.

I guess it depends on what kind music he's into. If he's retro, then the early stuff would work just fine. Heck, if he likes hip hop, introduce to Saul Williams smiling smiley

Show him Beside You In Time, it's relatively new and reflects alot of what you will see in concert. Minus the backdrops for this tour however.

Closure isn't a good route for this, NIN isn't 10% as ruthless now as they are in Closure.

yep, 100% agree with that

basically he should be strapped into one of those dentist chairs with those things keeping his eyelids opens and be forced to watch the happiness in slavery film clip on repeat until the day of the show... theres so many nin songs he needs to absorb... give him your collection then quiz him on which songs which using electrodes to his testicals zapping him everytime he gets a song wrong... alternatively you could make him watch closure, and all that could have been and beside you in time with the slip thrown in to be up to date.

Ok so I've been a huge fan since about '93-'94. Of course, these were my more angst driven, self loathing teenage years, but I was introduced to a very large catalogue of Trents earlier stuff with Rusty Nails 2. From then I was able to follow what had been released already, and supply my addiction with a fix with future releases as they had come out.

Just what I was going to suggest! smiling smiley Either show him BYIT, or the footage people have put together from the HD videos, such as the Sacramento show- it's on youtube and in great quality with some nice multicam edits.

03/23/09 3:00 PM

I'd suggest Wish, Terrible Lie, Closer, Hand that Feeds, Piggy, March of the Pigs.

03/23/09 3:30 PM

one friend became fan after hearing Memorabilia (more like a electronic music fan- now he only listens to NIN, lol)

one became fan after hearing The Great Below (the intellectual, spiritual kind of person)

and me became fan after hearing I Do Not Want This (the crazy kind of person)

03/23/09 3:44 PM

I say give them a picture of Trent, that will surely do it for any sight seeing person, ha ha kidding, no give them 'With Teeth' to listen to and let them watch him perform and work his magic.
But for real I heard the music 1st before I seen what Trent even looked like and it was the music that captivated me personally.

03/24/09 3:42 PM

id suggest a cd with this
1.1,000,000(gonna be played)
2.happiness in slavery
3.the hand that feeds
4.ruiner
5.something i can never have(gonna be played)
6.terrible lie
7.the good soldier
8.starfuckers inc.
9.just like you imagined
10.the fragile
11.discipline
12.march of the pigs
13.suck
14.head like a hole(always last song before encore)

those songs should give him a good idea of what NIN are like and there are also some live regulars there so he might recognise them when he goes.

I would make a CD like this:

1. 1,000,000 (an obvious opener, and almost instantly likeable)
2. March Of The Pigs
3. The Hand That Feeds
4. Me, I'm Not
5. Terrible Lie
6. Wish
7. The Day The World Went Away
8. 01 Ghosts I
9. All The Love In The World
10. Discipline
11. Closer
12. We're In This Together
13. Head Like A Hole
14. Only
15. Gave Up
16. 31 Ghosts IV
17. In This Twilight
18. Hurt

Covers many singles, some softer sides, some heavier sides, and all of them (besides ATLITW) have been played live.
