Trent Reznor Q&A

At the beginning of your career Nine Inch Nails was looked at as being subversive and “evil” music. People protested your concerts and spoke out against your music publicly. In 2000 John McCain was accused of corrupting America by supposedly proclaiming Nine Inch Nails his favorite band. Now you and Nine Inch Nails seem to be looked at in a respected light and as something to be emulated. Even the President has told you he is a fan of your music.

1) Looking back how do you feel about the way Nine Inch Nails was viewed? Is it something you are still proud of?

2) How do you feel about your current role in music as someone to look to and emulate? Do you see it as a burden? Do you wish it had not changed?

3) What do you think caused this change in the way Nine Inch Nails is perceived? Is it a societal change or do you think it is an inner changing even if your back catalog is the same?

04/09/09 12:36 PM

he said a "true fan" question so my question would be: what is a true NIN fan?

04/09/09 3:20 PM

Trent-Now that NIN will be on hiatis for a while, will you finally consider doing the concerts with just you and a piano like with the "React Now" and "Bridge School" performances? Please? I'd LOVE to see you do this!!!grinning smiley

I remember discovering my aunt's record collection in the early 80s and the countless hours spent fascinated by the covers & liner notes. Over the years, the cover that stood out most vividly in my memory was Elton John's "Captain Fantastic..." - quite the sensory overload for a little girl, if you know what I mean - and to this day (it is now in my possession) I see something new every time I look at it.

My question is: as a fellow member of the LP generation, what is your all-time favourite album cover and what makes it so memorable to you?

04/09/09 3:34 PM

1. Are there any interesting stories about inspirations for any of your songs that you'd be willing to share?

2. What is the probability that Nine Inch Nails will ever release another album?

3. A lot of your albums and even albums you've been involved with seem to involve a storyline or concept. Have you ever given thought to exploring other artistic mediums such as writing?

04/09/09 3:50 PM

What was the most unlikely place you found yourself being referenced?

04/09/09 3:56 PM

1) Have you ever lost an arm-wrestling match?
2) What are the reasons for not playing certain songs at shows?

MOD EDIT: Removed #3. Please don't ask Trent any questions about his personal life.

Ok ugh,

1. Would you be willing to appear for an interview on The Howard Stern Show.

2. When do you plan to retire from your music career and what do you plan to do after that?

3. Do you ever get jealous of the media attention surrounding today's artist and yearn to be back in the spotlight just like your younger days?

that's it, proabably wont get answered any of these because there's gonna be a gazillion more people but I gave it a shot.

04/09/09 4:27 PM

1. Usually when you guys are playing bigger venues like amphitheatres or arenas, setlist tends to gravite around casual-fan favorites, mostly singles. I'm guessing that's because it's those casual fans that really get to sell out the place. However, given that NIN/JA might just be the final tour for NIN, can we expect to see you dust off old tracks and/or debut songs that were never played before ? You know, those deeper cuts hardcore fans would kill themselves over like "And All That Could Have Been", "The Becoming", "The Great Below", "Ruiner", "Just Like You Imagined", etc...

2. There has been a while in between The Fragile and With Teeth, most medias were being really harsh on NIN most likely due the more anger-fueled sides of your music/lyrics which some people tend to overlook. Since putting out Ghosts and The Slip, experimenting with business models, taking out indie bands on tour, it seems there is a generally very favourable buzz around NIN right now even from the snobbiest medias (Pitchfork). What are your feelings on it ?

3. Looking back, which album is your favorite of yours ? How would you rank them, in all honesty ? We've all heard you say that you always made honest records and remember how you felt at the time, but how does the current Trent Reznor feel like when listening to his own stuff years later ?

04/09/09 4:30 PM

Trent,

1)Do you believe that we have something like a soul?

2)Did it take you a while to get the piano in Right Where it Belongs so perfect and chilling or did it just come to you?

3)What colour are you eyes, tongue sticking out smiley I can't tell if they are brown or green.

04/09/09 4:34 PM

1) Do you still remember what it felt like the very first time you were on stage as NIN? How is it different from now? Are you more confident that the audience will like the show no matter what, and do you think your perception/expectation of what is going to happen at a show will change with this tour given that you're taking a break for a while--is there maybe more pressure to feel like you have to make it *really* good?

2) Visual artists hang their own works at home and nobody thinks it's odd but for some reason actors & musicians who do it [i.e., play their own movies or CDs] are viewed as strange/conceited (although they shouldn't be). So do you ever put your own music on to just listen to it? Not for work, not to share tracks on blip.fm, not to analyze something with Alan, but just to hang out and listen to what you created? Have you ever done this with other people around who thought it was strange; or do you just have no interest in hearing your own stuff after it's been released?

And for my silly entry:
3) You said back at the Philly show last August that unlike years ago there were now a lot of "hot chicks" in the front row. But then you said in Melbourne that the front row there was much more beautiful than the front row in the States. So, Trent, just how did we Americans turn ugly for you in those few short months? Please phrase your answer in the form of a compliment. :-D

Oh and thanks very much for doing this. It's appreciated.

1. If you had the chance to collaborate with any musical artist of your choosing, including the deceased, who would you choose?

2. If you had to create a new album with your current musical mindset, how do you think you would create it? Would it be more ambient works or heavier Industrial?

3. Have you ever considered the possibility of creating another album similar to Still and recreating newer songs with a more piano-based structure, and perhaps a tour following the stripped-down piano vibe?

04/09/09 5:25 PM

1. Street Sweeper was added to the upcoming tour. Were you able to hear any of their music before they were added? If not would you still have made the same decision if you did hear their album?

2. NIN has been doing a lot of cool video footage lately. Would you consider taping an entire soundcheck and maybe showing off your gear to the fans? A "behind the scenes" look and feel to the work that goes on? On this same note in your digg interview you said that on this tour their won't be any DVD or official NIN footage of this tour, is that true?

3. In no way am I trying to kill the messenger, but has there been any details on why the June 3rd 2009 show at Darien Lake, NY was canceled and is there any future plans to add another date in New York? Prehaps in the Saratoga Performing Arts Center?

2. I keep telling everyone that this next tour will not be NIN's final tour forever. I'm right, right?

mod edit: questions about Trent's personal life are not permitted, so one question has been removed. Please post something else.

forgive me if someone has posted this or it is available somewhere... i am really wanting to know about trent's favorite foods and other normal crap that helps us put up with the day to day human existence

04/09/09 7:45 PM

I've always wanted to know, and I hope this is something you can talk about, what was the creepiest thing you ever received from a fan?

And I don't mean it as a downer or to poke fun at that person that sent it, it's more curiosity than anything else that's motivating my question.

04/09/09 8:56 PM

While you're on tour, is it a constant struggle to keep your voice in good singing condition? Do you actually "enjoy" singing or could you be just as artistically fulfilled with doing only instrumentals?

Thank you for doing this and please don't ever stop singing, you have a beautiful voice.

1. As someone interested in technology, what is your opinion on the Technological Singularity that may happen later this century? Is that potential worldchanging event something you see in a positive or negative light, and why?

2. What is the next musical instrument you'd like to learn how to play?

3. The trend is for technology to miniaturize and be integrated with the human body, and for people to be actively interconnected much of the time. What are your thoughts about this intimate merger of biology and technology, and its vast extension of our capabilities as individuals and as a collective? How do you think it will affect your life personally (and your methods of artistic expression) in the coming decades?

04/09/09 8:26 PM

Are you inspired by the piano? If so, do you ever compose music solely for the piano?

You said that Year Zero evolved from a day dream you had. Can you elaborate on what actually happened in this dream?

04/09/09 10:03 PM

Dear trent_reznor,

How has the current economical depression effected your on stage production and/or in studio production if at all? And how do you plan to over come this?

04/09/09 10:23 PM

does it sometimes seem like the media has always been approaching you from outer-space? have you been asked the same questions over and over?

04/09/09 11:35 PM

1. Is there a connection between Ghosts 38 and Demon Seed?

2. Where do Ghosts 37 and 38 fit in with Ghosts I-IV and why were they included as multitracks, but not on the CDs?

04/09/09 10:42 PM

Seeing that you're gonna be working with the YZ series, Is there another concept album that you've had in mind to do or want to do in the future?

04/09/09 11:00 PM

My two cents worth:

1. The creative writing process more often than not makes us delve into the dark side. You seem to be in a happy place now (evident in your music/lyrics). From a creative sense, do you now prefer to keep the door to the dark side firmly shut, or are you comfortable (and perhaps even like) continuing to take a peek inside?

2. You are one big evolving machine. Where are you going to be taking us from here?

3. Gotta have a funny one….How many gallons (litres for those on metric) of sweat did you lose at the Hordern show? (Where is the kiddie pool on stage when you need one!)

04/10/09 12:26 AM

is it better to burn out or fade away?

04/10/09 12:50 AM

1.) Where do you go for inspiration when you want to create a song but you have no ideas? Do you retreat to your thoughts even further, go on vacation, or something else?

2.) What are some really (really, really, if possible) obscure things you've always wanted to do, haven't done yet, and would like to in the future?

3.) Have you developed any tricks to overcoming nervousness (especially on the stage) over the years?

1) You surely are aware of the respect you've earned among fellow musicians, critics and fans. For some artists, that can be a little intimidating, in the sense that it can conditionate the creative process ("Will this album live up to the expectations people have for my music?", things like that) Has this respect ever got in the way of your creativity?

2) Would you consider making music even if you weren't willing to tour, for whatever reason?
