1) With regards to your comments during the Digg interview on keeping the website alive when NIN "go away" - have you considered putting a donate button on the website?

Like a lot of people, I got disenchanted with music-buying when an increasing number of records consisted of two singles and eight filler tracks - until it became the norm. Now I steal music, and "pay back" the band with gig tickets (am I right in saying this is where a band gets most of it's money, usually?) regardless of whether I could make the show. Ideally, I would "steal" music and donate money direct to the artist based on how much I liked it. Ok, most people didn't pay for Saul's album, but I'm sure others think it's worth a lot more than $5. I stole Future Perfect, but fell in love with it, so donated £10 to Autolux when they put Audience No.2 and a donate link on their website.

2) Does the environmental impact of touring, especially with a big light show, concern you at all? Have environmental factors influenced the way you organise a tour?

I.
"streaming online concerts" - are a cool idea. if i remember correctly, you said it's quite a bit of work to set up. i'm not a technician: why don't you just stream the soundboard audio of your live shows over nin.com?
some fans certainly would record it and there wouldn't be that much bandwith consumed.

II.
i usually check out most of the bands you seem to like (lcd soundsystem, autolux, saul etc, etc) - and most of them turn out to be fantastic and end up as some of my favorite artists. got any other recommendations?

III.
i've always been a fan of your grooving, beat oriented, hip-hop/trip-hop-ish tracks. (i'd say those are "me, i'm not", "closer", "even deeper", and even "ruiner" and "down in it".)
so... are you black, trent? - do you like that direction too? or du you feel limited by by your fans and rather not go down that path for a whole record?

p.s.: might clear some of my questions up.

04/08/09 2:45 AM

1)(i got 65 odd diggs for this i think) What were the last 5 albums you bought legally and the last 5 you downloaded illegally?

2)You asked on twitter for fans to suggest covers for you to do, did you take any of these and can you give us a hint as to what you chose? (I'm hoping for blue monday)

3)Do you have any unreleased songs that you really like, but couldn't figure out how to place them on an album or release them. For example, do you have any music like 'the ritual' you did with saul? That track is incredible in terms of production but sounds unlike anything you have released before.

1.)In a past interview you were asked about your opinion on rap music. You said that rap was the new "bad", like rock had been throughout a lot of the 80s and 90s. How would you describe the rock genre, as a whole, of today's age?

2.)If someone who had never heard NIN before walked up to you and asked you to describe the band to them, how would you do so?

3.)What will you miss most about NIN and touring?

I like badgers and penguins. Do you have a favourite animal of note?

What are your opinions on Metallica?

What does a typical work out for you entail?

Cheers.

04/08/09 4:10 AM

Thanks for doing this it's pretty awesome of you.

1) Do you ever get choked up on stage from seeing the fan's response to some of the more "hard hitting" songs like The Fragile, Non- Entity, Something I Can Never Have etc Is there any particular response from recent years that really sticks out good or bad?

2) Do you ever wish NIN hadn't gotten so big?

Thanks again =)

04/08/09 4:11 AM

1. When you first started Nine Inch Nails, where were you seeing yourself end up? Did you expect that you would go with this for so many years with fingers in different outlets (i.e. Year Zero ARG)?

2. Surely a lot of eventful things have happened to you in your whole life. What would you say shaped you the most in what you are today?

3. Generally, I am not a big fan of remixes, but listening to "The Frail (Version)," I loved it right away, mainly for it's use of orchestral instruments. Keeping this success in mind, would you consider composing more classical-oriented pieces?

04/08/09 6:08 AM

Thanks much for doing this Trent!
Ok, here's mine (apologies in advance if it's already been asked)

(Besides Rob) Do you have any visual artists that you like/inspire you?

04/08/09 5:09 AM

did you really do that zelda cover that is blasted over the internet?

04/08/09 6:22 AM

1. What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started your career in music?

2. Any plans to release more music under your own name (like "Driver Down" ) instead of Nine Inch Nails?

3. Are you mad at me for making Closure and Broken DVDs for people? I'll stop if you want me to, but I also have some out-of-print videos and laserdiscs that I can burn to DVD for you if you like. grinning smiley

Three questions that come to mind:

Everyone knows about your later career but what we havn't heard much about was the very early days of NIN (before Lolla) besides recording PHM. What were the band's first gigs and how did they go down ? and how did you manage to get to the stage where Perry noticed you and invited you to tour with Lolla thus setting the stage for your breakthrough to the mainstream.

To expand on another posters question, whats the reason for The Perfect Drug having never be played live ? we've heard all sorts of theories from you simply don't like the song to fans saying they spoke to Josh/Ally (can't remember which) and the aforementioned saying it simply didn't work when performed live.

And finally, what was the thinking behind picking 'The Day The World Went Away' as the lead single to The Fragile, when something like No, You Don't, Please, WITT etc would have been much more commercial and would have driven sales. Was it a purely artistic choice, as a way of showing the other side to NIN (especially after the image the band gained during the Self Destruct era) and if so how on earth did you manage to get that past Interscope?

mod edit: done.

04/08/09 6:30 AM

1 - who torrented Broken Video, Closure, and Definitive NIN Seeds?
2 - if The Fragile was fitting on 1 disk, what will be the playlist order?
3 - did Saul Williams want to release something so crazy that you made him not to?

04/08/09 6:03 AM

1. I need to know, do you like Metallica? Favorite member/album if so?

2. And if you don't like that question, how do you feel about anime?

04/08/09 6:11 AM

1. A lot of the people you've hired for NIN over the years have been quite prolific when it comes to their own musical endeavours outside of Nine Inch Nails. In light of the recent releases of Josh Freese's 'Since 1972' and Alessandro Cortini's '1' (under the name of Blindoldfreak), I was wondering if you've been keeping up with any of these projects and if so, what are some of your favourites?

2. Obviously it was a great relief for you to finally be free of a record label and all the bureacratic bullshit, but is there anything you wish you had done differently following your release from the contract with Interscope? For example, you've mentioned that the Lights in the Sky tour virtually bankrupted you, so would you have approached that differently knowing the financial strain it would cause without the backing of a label?

3. Is Nine Inch Nails something you foresee living indefinitely? The band is, essentially, you, yet you've said that you'd like to put it to rest for a while and pursue other things during the hiatus. Do you think the band will always be a viable option for you to release music or do you think you have outgrown/will outgrow the "brand name" and everything that has come to be associated with it?

edit: Ah, whoops--that first question has already been asked. I'll keep it there until I think of something better because it's still something I'd like to know the answer to!

04/08/09 7:12 AM

1) It's already been asked more than once in this thread, but I wanna push it: Are you planning on doing something special for The Fragile's 10-year anniversary later this year?

2) Is there a good chance you'll surface b-sides from any (or all) of your writing eras in some form down the road? This question would include scrapped stuff for Bleedthrough as well.

3) Do you see yourself writing another personable/introspective album under the NIN moniker in the not-so-distant future?

Hi Trent,

- What's your favorite NIN-era, when you look to it as an artist? (do you still have a connection with the old parts?)

- Most real NINfans adore The Fragile. Are you gonna play it more often?
Will The Fragile and its songs appear on festivals? (festivals are great to reach new people and fans, but since this a farewell to all the fans, maybe festivals can be a REAL 'best of'.

- You're THE artist who has also knowledge in "public relations". And i gladly believe it's sincere and spontaneous, almost every gig and interaction.
Are you aware of somekind of NINsanity, and that you made some people addicted to the whole "product"? Some people believe they know you all the way. Did you sometimes think you drove the interaction too far? (maybe even by your honoust texts)
(note: the texts and interaction are the passion and driver of the NINmachine and his image, and the thrills of being with someone so human and fragile in a musical way is the highest state of mind i've been in my life=> this sounds like the ninsanity i said, but it's still with reality. so me too is appreciating the addicting part of it)
(note 2: i think you know what i really want to say - my english is limited)

04/08/09 6:30 AM

1. I'm kind of stealing this question from kourtnielyn, but I'm dying to know, too: There was an interview years back where you mentioned having gone to an *NSync concert. Did anyone recognize you at the show, and if so what happened?

2. Has the concept for the next part of the Year Zero story changed at all given the changes in the political climate since the album came out?

3. Is there anything you wish you were better at or a talent you wish you had?

04/08/09 6:38 AM

1. What songs would comprise the soundtrack of your life?

2. What's on your bucket list (things you'd like to do/see/accomplish before you die)?

3. Would you rather see Big Ass Fucking Titties or Itty Bitty Titties being flashed at you from the audience during a show?

Where do you find your peace of mind, do you escape into nature, when you finally make it home or is time alone to just think? Or does it happen in the moments of writing a kind of meditation?

04/08/09 6:55 AM

1. You have mentioned before that the creation of The Slip, from writing to distribution, was very rapid. Do you think that it is a successful album, not in terms of distribution or sales/downloads, but musically? In hindsight would you have liked to have spent more time on it?

2. What NIN piece of music/song are you most proud of? And on the flip side is there one that you wish had never been released? Reasons?

3. You give your fans a lot of attention and in return they are incredibly dedicated to you. How do you feel about having such a devoted fan base and does it sometimes freak you out a bit?

04/08/09 7:26 AM

why haven't you add Rock Werchter to the tourpage? It looks like you aren't looking forward to this festival

04/08/09 7:27 AM

What is the one moment of your life that you would like to re-live all over again?

04/08/09 7:31 AM

If you were to do a duet with someone (female)...who would it be and why? Or is that not your "cup of tea"?

Since the launch of nin.com, I have seen your interaction with the fans grow...here and on Twitter. With the upcoming hiatus (the end of the NINJA tour) do you plan on continuing with updates here/on Twitter with what you are doing or working on/projects? Will you consider responding to PMs and/or doing a small Q&A on Twitter, actually replying directly to fans? Why or why not?

Would you consider having an "assistant or staff member" for the day during the NINJA tour? (If yes, can it be decided off of nin.com and not the local radio stations as there are many fans who travel out of state to see the shows, and would not be able to participate in local contests) Why or why not?

Have your opinions on marketing or the marketing process changed since you have taken on the role yourself?

What is something you really appreciate now that you didn't when you were 20?(not music-related).

Was there a 'Plan B' if music wouldn't have worked out for you?

Thanks!

04/08/09 7:40 AM

This many APPEAR personal, but it's humanitarian:

1. My favorite class in college was about evolution & since I have a son the IMPACT of
genetics has really hit home. So I think about your accomplishments, survival-ism, constant EVOLUTION, & innovation & I want to know if you have considered adding your genetic gold to the gene pool (even anonymously)?

2. Would you be open to your story of addiction, recovery, & reemergence being used to educate young adults on the dangers of drug abuse (preferably in a workshop type format where your music and lyrics could be explored)?

3. From attending a few of your shows recently, I've noticed your UNIQUE selection of opening acts and wonder if you have extended your support of any of these acts beyond having them open for NIN and then after 3 shows leaving them in the dust? What success have these acts sustained?

And finally, thank you for all you have given of yourself. It's been an honor to know you through this site & through your music.

1. Have you considered performing a different genre of music under a pseudonym? If so, what would be your naming considerations and match it to the music genre? This question is being asked as though it hasn’t been done before.

2. If you could dawn a pseudonym (again), would you consider music and books that incorporate growth based life lessons for children? Or it could be created under your name. You appear to be quite insightful regarding the way of the world and appear to have overcome major hurdles in life.

3. Ever think of crafting a musical? If so, what would be the story and what genre of music would you want to be sure to incorporate? How would you think it would be unique?

I'm interested in the next direction in which growth is being considered and the hiatus.

04/08/09 7:54 AM

1. How much are those tambourines? I mean, you give away a good 3 or so each gig. It's good you're keeping them in business during such hard times and all, but hot damn... Don't go broke on tambourines is all I'm saying.

b) As a hipster, I am very heartened to see such amazing bands on tour, not to mention your penchant for Tiger shoes and AA clothing. Would you bare your nipples for an American Apparel ad? It seems to be all the rage. Even Last Night's Party has a banner ad for their 'back massagers' not being used as 'back massagers', if you know what I mean.

"Trent in the 100% Cotton Zip Fleece Hoody"... It could work. Think about it. White wall, funky haircut, Cut Copy playing in the background...

III - Did you ever smash something on stage and think 'Oooh, that was my $3000 gibson, not my $200 epiphone'?

04/08/09 9:01 AM

This was my digg submission (yielding 87 diggs), but I'm summarizing it to make it more concise (see original message for more detail).

1. There is a large demand for live recordings of Nine Inch Nails' shows. Many fan recordings are made available online, but it doesn't put money in your pocket. Add in ebay sellers who profit off of this demand (> $15 for 2 burned CDs or more for a DVD). I wonder if you've considered a monetized NIN specific live recording torrent site? This site could be ratio based, but offer the option of donations (to you) for users with bad ratios (many existing torrent sites already employ this strategy).

2. I'm not sure of the legal implications in releasing older live recordings (while you were still on a label), but I'd gather things are wide open for those since. Are there any specific legal issues that prevent you from releasing live recordings now?

And finally, an homage...

3. Rob's blogged about his general dislike/hatred for beards. You've had a beard numerous times since then. Has this caused any tension? Has your opinion on beards changed?

What is the most technically difficult piece you can play on piano?

Have you considered creating an independent arcade game that would feature your music, or maybe a level in Little Big Planet?

Are you going to keep in touch with your fan base during the hiatus through nin.com and/or Twitter?

04/08/09 8:08 AM

Are there any plans to re-release any of your albums that were made under Interscope/TVT? This year marks the 20th anniversary of Pretty Hate Machine and the 10th anniversary for The Fragile, are there any plans to acknowledge these anniversaries in any way?

Also, what ever happened to the plans for the Greatest Hits compilation you planned to work with Interscope on? Not enough interest?
