ahh thanks.

I was a 1,000 donor at the Charlotte, NC show and what you've probably read so far holds true for me as well. It was amazing. I'm 39,have been listening to NIN for about 18-19 years and roughly 48 hours after the show I'm still as giddy as a 12 year old boy.

They were all incredibly nice and I was unbelievably impressed, there was a large amount of 1k & $300 donors and they went through all of them graciously. I also was impressed with the NIN.com rep Kaylee who guided us through our day. She was very patient and always had a smile. We were baked by the sun on hot asphalt, got rained on until we were all chilled and I've got a nice sunburn to last into next week and I'd do it 100 times over.

Thanks to Robin, Justin, Ilan and most of all Trent for giving of yourselves for such an amazing cause and an experience I'll never forget!

Charlotte - 1.2k donor... Summary of experience...

I jumped on this thing the very night it was announced... got way too excited after Trent posted "what to expect"... then the first few reports came in, and I was on top of the world... but... then came the reports of tons of folks "backstage", and the rotating of groups on the stage for the show, no time backstage after the show, etc... I won't lie, I became more and more disappointed as the reports kept coming in...

<insert record scratch>... wait a minute...

This was for charity! EVERY DOLLAR going to help Eric... meaning that Trent is footing the bill for catering, staff, his and the band's own time patiently greeting every donor with sincere grattitude... what the hell? I was getting disappointed over not getting what was described? for something that Trent threw together at the last minute... how silly and selfish...

After more thought in this different light, I realised that what Trent originally described was something more like a $5000 experience... but I paid $1200 and got, in the end, what turned out to be a $2000 experience (at the very least). That doesn't even include the warmth of knowing you were part of a fantastic cause and drawing attention to an issue that affects us all...

I can't imagine the logistics and red tape they had to go through to make this as intimate an experience as they did for that many people... If the government had reacted that quickly for hurricane Katrina... with just 1/100th the effort and care that the NIN crew did for this experience.... things would have been a lot different down in New Orleans back in 2005...

Trent offered a "unique opportunity"... and wow... that's exactly what I got... the agony of the heat and sun... stuck in a thunderstorm.... missing part of the show... yeah, those "bad" things will be remembered.... BUT... all that seems so stupid and insignificant after the fact... the meet and greet.. soundcheck... being on stage... and most importantly, the people... both donors and the crew who made it happen.... just incredible... Worth every dollar and the horrible sunburn!

If you have the opportunity to do this for future dates, don't think about it... just do it... walk in with a good attitude and an open mind... Trent will NOT let you down... I promise...

THANK YOU Trent, Robin, Ilan (who is fun as hell to watch playing from back stage), and Justin (perhaps the sweetest guy on earth)!!! AND A VERY VERY VERY EXTRA THANK YOU to the crew that kept the energy going in a positive direction - this experience couldn't have been so awesome with out you!

- "Nerd Boy" (that's what Trent called me - I kinda like it)...

P.S. - To those who do this in the future... The experience is yours to make it even more special... Please take care of each other (example: offer plastic bags to those who forgot that it might rain and ruin whatever they brought to get signed) ... Talk to others in your group, and remember the real reason this is even given to you as an opportunity... and as you walk off the stage, THANK EVERY SINGLE PERSON YOU PASS BY ON THE CREW... I did that... and their smiles, knowing that they just made something really special for at least the person thanking them will live with you forever...

P.P.S. - Trent... you didn't play 'Last'... *sigh*... I'll get over it... ; ) Congrats on your recent sobriety anniversary and your engagement!!! I wish you nothing but happiness and can't wait to see what you create next!!!

UPDATE : 06.15.2009 - STILL flying high from this experience... and still can't say thank you enough to Trent, the band(s), and crew... what a way to wrap up 18 years of being a NIN fan!!!

grneyedgirl: i have been so disappointed reading about the JA vip experiences. i had such a wonderful time at the nin one and really was hoping that the jane's people would have a similar experience. it's a shame that with so few people at each show, jane's couldn't have offered a more personal experience. pictures, at least! that said, that part about your son sleeping with the drumsticks is so cute! he'll treasure those forever, i'm sure.

My friend & I did the $300 thing in Toronto. It was amazing - I now refer to June 2 as Best Day Ever. Chatted with other people in line, then chatted with different other people in the second line. All fun.

I got too excited thinking about it ahead of time, so I didn't really think about what would happen or what to say - and I should have. There were so many of us in T.O. that I thought we would be really rushed through, but we weren't.

Robin - met him first. I asked him to sign the picture frame/matting. He looked up, held out his hand and asked me my name. I didn't expect this - thought we'd be rushed through - so took me a second to understand the question and remember my name. Think I got it right, but I was distracted by how nice he was! He asked what he was signing and I babbled about a picture frame. He said that was a good idea.

Justin - met him next. Again, expected to be rushed and he held out his hand and asked my name. I was prepared this time and said my name right off the bat!eye rolling smiley From what I saw, Justin really tried to connect with everyone - to give them a "moment" to remember. Truly appreciated.

Trent - what i wanted to say was how much joy his music brings me and how I listen to a song and think "it just doesn't get any better then this" because of the lyrics and/or the groove. And then minutes later I hear another of his songs and think, "no, this is the best ever!". What I said was a bunch of words about a picture frame, and a picture and then just smiled a lot. sigh.

Ilan - seemed a bit shy but I was still babbling about the picture. My friend is much calmer than me, and she had a nice chat with him. He ended up next to her in the group photo and she she joked that he could put her arm around her if he wanted - that she was safe. He laughed and did.

Soundcheck:
Worth every penny, the time in line-ups, using a vacation day and more! I was in the centre, one person back from the rail - until I turned to talk to my friend and then I was two back. All good. I've never been that close before and when they kicked into The Wretched it was just amazing. So completely happy I just wanted that moment to last forever.

It didn't, but then we got to hear SSSC. I've heard their NINJA site tunes and thought they'd be fun - so much better then expected! Will be buying their CD tomorrow.

So, an amazing day & experience.

IT was EPIC!

I could never imagine meeting my favorite band this young. (I'm only 22!)
I was being somewhat pessimistic about the passes because I got an email to retrieve them outside of Bonnaroo.
Thankfully, Keely, the one in charge of this, contacted me to meet her somewhere in Bonnaroo.
I got the updated bands for both me and my boyfriend.
We were so thrilled!!! It was great to feel like VIPs.
Anyways, later that night we had to meet up with her at 10:30pm.
We waited and then waited some more once we got backstage.
It wasn't long until we went to the little tent/canopy area that nin was standing under with a table in front of them.
Before we entered & while we were waiting, we got a chance to talk to Leo & Brett.
Rob Sheridan was walking around. I was just saying to myself "wow, he is so quiet".
When we entered the tent/canopy thing Robin was first. They were all ready to meet us as I could tell by their hand gestures and smiles. They all had their hands out.
I shook Robin's hand and said,"nice to meet you, my name is Jackie". He said "nice to meet you" and then smiled. I then did the same with JMJ. Then when I came to Trent his back was turned away. (BTW, my boyfriend was first in line and then I was second.)
Then he turned around with a big grin on his face ready to shake our hands.
He has a strong grip. I think I shook his hand at least 3 times.
I completely forgot to ask Robin and JMJ to sign my album - The Fragile so I said to them "sorry, I forgot to give this to you..please sign it".
Then My Bams (a/k/a boyfriend) asked Trent what was his favorite Star Trek series. He said the original series. Then My Bams asked what he will do or has done at Bonnaroo (something like that) and he responded with "probably take a nap or so because I have nothing to do for the next four hours". I think he also said that the Boss (Bruce Springstein)was boring.
One of the guards said to my Bams that it was enough with Trent...lol...as my bams was going to ask another question about Star Trek (URG, my Bams talks TOO much.)
I then told Trent "thank you so much for everything and for doing this for your crazy fans!". He then replied "not all of you are crazy" with a small smile.
I blushed...lol...
I then asked him if he knew about Meathead (of course, he probably does...) and told him about my shirt, which is a Coke Zero shirt I modified into a girly tank top.
He said "yeah, I'll probably drink about 20 of those before the night has ended."
Then as I shook his hand again.
I then took a step closer to Ilan and told him what an awesome drummer he was.
AND HE SO IS!!!! He said thank you. I can tell he is shy. I'm shy too because I didn't really have much to say to Robin & JMJ & not really even Trent.
Anyways, after the signing and greeting we were directed to outside of the tent/canopy thing and just stood there until everyone had their chance.
Then we were informed of preparing our cameras for pictures.
When it came our turn, I hurried up and put my camera case in my bag...
My Bams and I walked over to nin. Trent put his arm around me, and I did the same to him. As he did this, he asked my Bams "is it okay if I hit on your girl?".
My Bams told me later (cause I didn't hear his response) that he said "sure!".
When Trent asked that, I had a huge smile on my face...it's not everyday you hear your favorite artist say something like that personally.
After the pic was taken, Trent faced me and said he like my accent. I was kind of shocked and said "well, I am from here, Tennessee". He then said,"I think it's very charming". Then we both smiled.
Very Magical...
Before we left, Rob Sheridan was caught up in the storm of 14 fans wanting his autograph! I asked him politely if he would sign both mine and my boyfriend's albums.
He said okay. Then he had a sharpie, which he was confused to why he had it and who to give it back to.
JMJ also came up to us and suggested that on stage would be very bass-sounding then he said not like that's a problem, but if we wanted a full ensemble of instruments heard then be in the crowd. My Bams of course asked him about the Meathead JMJ- Best Bassist Ever picture. He said he knew of it and thought of it as being the truth. lol

Then we were all escorted back to the entrance we came through. We had these stickers on us to show we were allowed backstage. We were told to come back at around 12:45am to watch the show from backstage.
We came back at the time announced. We were directed toward the backstage area behind the lights. The view was not the biggest, but it was certainly the best I've ever seen only because I've never experience the scenery before and it's nin.
The show was jaw-dropping and vivid in every aspect a show could be.

I left with a jolt of energy at 3:30am.

Anyways........
I really appreciate the kindness and niceness of all the nin crew and of course, the nin members! YOU GUYS ARE SO FUCKING NICE!
Trent, lol, you should always remember me as the coke zero girl. If you ever read this, I'll always support you!
I'm grateful to have met you, Robin, JMJ, and Ilan.

^^Hey Skitzy, it was so nice to meet you guys. I had a great time too. I posted a little bit about the VIP thing in the Bonnaroo thread; might still write up something here, but the general idea is it was wonderful. Thanks so much to everyone who helped out with this--NIN crew, Nasty Little Man (Trent's PR, who totally did extra work to accommodate my shooting the band as well as participating in the VIP thing), and of course NIN, the best band ever in more ways than one.

This is one of the three pictures Leo took for me. We were all laughing right before this but apparently everyone but me Got Serious for the actual picture.

06/18/09 5:32 PM

It's been 13 days since the Camden show, and I am still on a high.

I was one of those unlucky bastards that got the money together the night they shut down the option to buy a VIP package, but the night before someone pm'ed me with an open spot.

Stood out on the cold rain for over three hours, catching a wicked cold....
but it was so worth it to meet someone I had admired for the last 16+ years. I thanked all of them for doing such a wonderful and generous thing, chatted for a moemnt about the fail! in the medical system *I work in Durable Medical Equipment*, then got into the group for the group photo. By the way... Robin is TALL! Stood next to him for the pic and he TOWERED over me. *okay, I am 5'3, it's not that hard!*

As we were being shoo'd out so the next group could come in... I was the last in line to go past Trent, and managed to smile shyly at him and ask for a hug. And I got it. And it was a real hug and not a 'shoulder squeeze' and I am still grinning and blushing.

Sound check was shorter than usual, due to the crappy weather holding up the buses, but I was dead center on the rail and I got to hear "The Good Soldier" and "Dead Souls".

It was seriously one of the best days of my life, getting to meet Trent and the guys. The best b-day present to myself ever.

06/18/09 6:30 PM

maryelle..are you 4ft tall?LMAO kiiiiiiding

06/23/09 11:31 PM

Did the band stop doing the VIP thing after the U.S. NINJA tour was over? Havent seen any new postings

06/24/09 10:47 AM

^they can'tt do it for the festival shows but when they play their own shows on the europe tour they are having the VIP thing.

06/24/09 3:09 PM

wow, reading all of these stories makes me really happy and somewhat sad at the same time as there were no meet and greet at the atlanta show due to the fact that this was before eric de la cruz.

:sighs: well, this is it really. I'll never be able to tell the man in person that he DID cross boundries with his music ( he mentioned in an interview that he wanted to reach as many people as possible ). He reached a Deaf person, me. I'd really like for him to know that.

Are there meet and greets overseas? I've been waiting for some more happy stories!

06/24/09 8:16 PM

Here is my rather long winded VIP experience post on my blog from the June 7th show in Wantagh NY. It is truly a night I will remember for the rest of my life. I hope you enjoy reading about my experience as much as I enjoyed living it!

Thank you Trent and NIN for making a dream come true. Thank you to all of the fellow fans I met who were so wonderful and love and paryers to Eric.

For anyone who has dreamed of getting the opportunity to meet, shake hands, chat a little, and get an autograph from not only a rock star, but from one that you are a serious fan of and admire very much, this story is for you.

This story is also for you if you have ever made an embarrassing first impression.

Recently my Fiance, Shane and I had the opportunity to meet Trent Reznor, Robin Fink, Justin Meldal-Johnson and Ilan Rubin otherwise known as Nine Inch Nails.

Shane has since described this day as the best day of his life ever. As a musician himself, Trent has been a huge influence on his own music and meeting him and getting his BC Rich acoustic signed was like a dream come true. He was calm and collected, shook hands, introduced himself, was nice and polite. He made a great first impression.

And me? How did I distinguish myself amongst the hundred or so others in the fan That was really funny, would of loved to had been there, know how you feel couldn't imagine what would come out of my mouth!! HA HAassembly line that day? Well it goes something like this:

As we walked single file towards a table that the band was sitting behind, the first one to greet us was Robin Fink. Now in our house Robin Fink has acquired the nick name "Noise-Guy" stemming from his play on the Nine Inch Nails "All That Could Have Been" live DVD. Despite how this sounds "Noise-Guy" is meant as a compliment. Of course when you call someone a nick-name enough times in private, sometimes you forget that it isn't common knowledge. I mean, the Robin that we cheered on the TV never objected to being called Noise-Guy so it must be ok right? Well you probably know what happened. I called Robin Fink "Noise-Guy" to his face. I'm sure I was smiling when I did it, it was meant as a compliment but something tells me by the look on his face that he didn't get it. He just kind of screwed up his nose, sat back with a confused look and said, "noise guy?" He didn't really look impressed. I have to admit I was a little scared. "Oh-no I've offended Noise-Guy" shouted the voice inside my head. Rest assured Robin, if you ever read this and you remember the incident, it was meant as the best of compliments.

Justin was next along the table. I don't really remember saying much to him. I think I was trying not to put my foot in my mouth again.

I should have tried harder... Next at the table was Trent Reznor.

It started off really well, I shook his hand, he asked me my name and I was able to say it without too much difficulty. I handed him a copy of the Ghosts CD which he signed graciously. I think I said thank-you and I moved on so that Shane could have his turn. This is where it all goes downhill.

You see, Shane has many funny clippings and random objects taped to his guitar. One of these is a hand drawn cartoon of a french fry that is singing "...and all the girlies say I'm pretty fly for a french fry..." Shane drew it himself and so he was delighted beyond words that out of everything stuck on it Trent picked out and laughed at that one thing. Yep, so far so good, except this is when I pipe up and point to the clipping from actual packaging that reads "Shane's World: Anal 101" and I say "Well I like this one the best."

It wasn't until the next night at work that I realized what I had done. I recalled the knowing and giddy grin that creeped across Trent's face and I realized that in the few seconds that I had to make an impression on rock stars not only did I call Robin Fink "Noise-Guy" to his face, I told Trent Reznor I liked it in the ass.

Manchester VIP was superb. Although we didn't get a soundcheck or pictures (we got one big group one) the experience was well worth the money and the band were lovely.

I got my iPod and Fragile lithograph signed.

07/19/09 6:01 AM

The Manchester Meet and greet was shocking. Two hours waiting around,No soundcheck,no photos,a very quick handshake and on your way.We used to get the same type ofmeet and greet as part of the spiral membership presale. The donations where created as a way to get people to donate for a very worthy cause and bring attention to a messed up system, but we where supposed to get a VIP package,we never.Still havent been sent the group photo. What we got in comparison to the U.S was shocking. They could have at least allowed us to have individual photos with the band,it would have taken five or ten minutes and would have rescued what was a complete let down. Now N.I.N have announced special intimate club dates in the U.S,beginning to think they couldnt give a damn about its UK fan base.Im fortunate I can afford to make the $300 donation,to some people its a weeks wages.Either way, what we got was a big dissapointment.Sorry to say it but we got shafted.
