i can't relate to those who count TDS or the fragile as trent's best records. he was high when he made them, and it's rather obvious - in other words, the subtlety of them compared to his newer stuff is no comparison at all. and it's because his mind was not in the best shape. so for those folks, my advice would be - get some q-tips.
and to put PHM as his best, c'mon - his first record, with only ten tracks, is his best ever? that's just childish.
so, then - that leaves WT, YZ, Ghosts, and The Slip. (broken as his best isn't even worth considering)
Ghosts and The Slip are both too sloppy to be his best records. both were made quickly. Ghosts has too much fluff, and The Slip ... well, it's not that great.
...
YZ is NIN's most cohesive and complete record. but WT has the best quality of music. it's just kind of short. if only he could have squeezed in non-entity and home. then it would be perfect.
but if i had to say, i'd still go with WT, but followed VERY closely by YZ.
... as a result, i think the perfect NIN record would be a combination of the cohesiveness of YZ and the music of WT.
