Do NIN fans have a fascination with morbid, grisly, grusome things?

You should try the album Still. Particularly the instrumentals, such as Adrift and at Peace and Leaving Hope.

While you may never end up being a huge NIN fan, it seems like you could appreciate these at least to some extent. Also, his live recordings tend to be stronger and better than his album versions. He usually approaches the live and studio recordings differently.

I've come across quite a few people who had the wrong ideas about NIN. It reminds me of how I've come across a lot of people who say they don't like Rammstein but the only song they know is Du Hast. Like NIN and Closer. These same people, when they hear more than the two singles they heard on the radio, suddenly they have more appreciation for the band. Fancy that. It's also why I find 'singles' really annoying. It creates ignorance.

NIN is very open ended music. If you listen to Ghosts I-IV you can really see how open the music is without vocals. There really is no restrictions with the music. Ghosts 28 and 34 are great examples.

As stated above too, NIN fans are notoriously touchy. It doesn't really matter what you say here or where. You'll have more ignorant asshole ego-maniac responses than constructive ones. It's unfortunate but it's the price you pay with an open ended community with a massive fanbase. It's garbage like this that prevents someone like Trent from posting on things like Twitter or even his own message board a lot of times.

It's cool though, that you took the time to understand. It's also incredibly sad and immature that people such as the above post calling you a douchebag need to waste their time attacking. It's incredibly unnecessary.

I try to do similar things that you're trying to do with a lot of different types of music, so I can respect that.

But this IS a huge rabid fanbase so anonymity means a larger e-penis. That rarely ends well. However, where there's shit, there's gold. There's a lot of educated, brilliant people around here as well. That is also another thing we're notorious for along with being OCD and excessively defensive and touchy.

I don't know why I didn't think of this with my earlier response, but this sums up MY feelings on this topic. We always play music in the morgue, and since I'm in charge I get to say what gets played. I usually go for what the techs want to hear, since they either make my job easy or way fucking difficult and its the only time I hear new music that is outside of my *genre*. Only once did we listen to NIN, and it bothered and distracted me enough that I made them change CDs. I think of NIN music as beautiful and I was uncomfortable with the juxtaposition between what I was hearing and what I was seeing and smelling and touching.

No, no, I like pretty, cute and cuddley things ... but handling a dead body or two once in a while doesn't bother me.

dontunderstandnin actually reminded me of something that happened to me a few years ago.

A gentleman in my small town that had seen me around a few times bumped into me on the street one day and asked me why I liked to dress the way I did. He went on to explain that he had no idea why someone might like to wear the sort of clothes that I had, but was careful to point out that he was curious and was in no way trying to offend me. I couldnt even come up with a good, long, detailed response. All I could think was "It just feels right. Im not really....comfortable any other way." (which is also how I feel about NIN)

I was actually quite flattered that he went out of his way to ask. In real life, Im quite an imposing/scary person to the point that several of my friends have told me they were "Scared to talk to me" before they found out how i really am once you get to know me.

With that, I must say kudos to dontunderstandnin for going out of his way to make an account on a bands' website he doesnt even like, all in an effort to come up with a few answers to something that seems to baffle him (or, its seems not so much anymore perhaps, after these last few pages of posts).

I can only hope he DOES understand that no matter where you go, there are always a few stupid jack@z$3$ out there and that the few who made it onto this thread havent skewed his more detailed view of NIN fans to a bad degree.

...then again, I could also ask you WHY you like Bob Dylan when it really just sounds like all sorts of disgustingness to me.

And that would be fine with me. I would say that I like Bob Dylan because he says things that many people feel but are unable to express. I like Bob Dylan because, to me, he is simply the best songwriter I've ever come across. I also like Bob Dylan because, even though many many other singers have better voices, none of them could take one of his songs and sing it with the same sincerity/earnestness that he does.

I'm sorry if it offends you that some NIN songs "sound like all sorts of disgustingness to me", but they do. I have no problem if you feel the same about Dylan...

See, this is the problem with your post. I do NOT think that Bob Dylan is a good songwriter, or worthy of his success at all, but do I sign up on a Bob Dylan fan forum with the alias "whythefuckisbobdylanpopular" and start asking potentially offensive questions from his fans?

...no.

The reason most of us like NIN? Melody, harmony, the complex layers of his musical abilities. Trent is a genius...like Dylan, a poet speaking for and to his generation. The thing I find interesting about being an avid NIN fan is the complete lack of undestanding people have towards us in general. We are lumped in a group of sad, disgusting, goth kids who are suicidal and most likely cut ourselvs. Not true brotha...at all.

Yuk...goth.

I am 34 and so not goth. Actually if you saw me on the street...would never be able to tell I am secretly a NIN freak! Been in love with the MUSIC since 89. Because that is what it is about....his music that speaks to our souls the way the music you love speaks to yours. We are just a little darker is all. Does help he's not hard to look at.

Trent is a very talented man who took Nothing...literally....and made it into a strange, juxtaposition of rage and beauty. This is why I love nIn.

I think this may have been said already, but one of the many reasons why I love Nine Inch Nails is because the songs are a release. In real life, one can't scream at the world for being angry, sad, lonely, or extremely hyper (at least, not without freaking everyone as well as themselves out). But when I listen to NIN, I get over a bad test grade or a fight I had with my dad or boyfriend. I can even allow my real emotions to surface through enjoyment of a song (if I am sad, mad, lonely).

I also believe that certain music is so great that it seems to be much larger than myself or anything that I could ever be/accomplish, and while not all Nine Inch Nails song give me the feeling of having been in the presence of something ethereal, many of the songs leave me with goosebumps and a heavy heart.

08/21/09 2:01 PM

I love NIN because that man has somehow found a way to make fascinating, layered music that can pluck any emotion or feeling in my heart and can relate to anything going on in my life, be it a high or a low. I love NIN because he's done something all by himself..produce, sing, play, record, perform, etc. all on his own whim (obviously the live performances with the help of others). There's no other band that I can listen to EVERY day without getting tired of. He has such a variety in his music. That's not mentioning how every sound adds to the songs, every breath is an instrument, and every word is poetry.

Hope that clears it up.

NIN is just...special (and I don't mean that in a retard kinda way). It's actually really hard to put into words. I like lots of other types of music as well but NIN will always have a special place for me. Nothing touches it. Comes close even.

Where did I judge anyone? I personally do not like the music. I can tell you without doing any more listening that I will never like the music. I AM interested in why some people DO like the music. I'm also curious whether most fans of NIN are also fans of the music videos and other imagery that depicts morbid and horrific things. I'm not saying it's "bad" to like those things, I'm just wondering if they are tied together or separate.

I don't know if you are just used to being judged, but you're response sounds somewhat insecure. I have no problem with people who like different things than I like. I actually find it interesting, which is obviously why I'm here...

I respect you, you speak without any malice towards the fans. yes some of his lyrics are pure flth. filth that he craved and gave to us. many of his fans are cocks just like with tool, maynard james keenan really doesnt get on with 50% of his fan base. but most of us are good hearted, sensitive souls who like a good scream. theres my answer to you. he has helped me through his sounds and explorations . rock music will never die, and in all honesty led zeppelin were just as filthy. think about it. thats my two quid.

I could spend hours typing a reply to this, but in short, we're all individuals with a wide variety of interests and tastes in music. I'll just simply say this.

Nine Inch Nails is my favourite music, and has been since the early 1990's.
My other favourite band is The Beatles.
I also love Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.
I also love a great many other bands of varying styles.

I have absolutely no interest or fascination with morbid, grisly, gruesome things.

i do. thats life. and those are buzz words.

So well put!
That last sentence pretty much sums up why I am a fan. smiling smiley
I get so sick of some thinking that all NIN fans are mopey little goth freaks, who hate their parents. NOT true.
If you look at the crowd at a NIN show, there are all shapes, races, sizes, ages, male and female. A little of everyone. Some types more than others.
I find it awe-inspiring and a comfort to see how so many relate through the music.
And for the record. Yes, I am fascinated by dark and morbid things.
But I am also fascinated by Sesame Street, Looney Tunes and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and I still love my stuffed animals. Variety keeps things interesting. winking smiley

for me it's a fascinating topic, because:

you would never guess by looking at me, that i love nin-music; never
people, which get to know this, look at me like i made a bad joke
i don't like any more "signs" on my outer face/cloths, which would speak of anything i have inside
just a little introduction.
but.

i really do have a fascination for morbid things. i don't like horror movies, and i wouldn't go for seeing real dead bodies. but i like the rost, the disgusting animals in NIN's videos, and i used to describe (for myself, because i don't believe many people would understand) my inner life with "monsters" and "worms" and so on. i totally dig the aesthetics of the videos like "closer" and lyrics like in "reptile". (the direction would be also the aesthetics of aphex twin.)
i don't love sculls in particular, but accept them in context.
don't love vulgarity but like the obscene
(don't like MM)
i like things like old medical drawings, which look really scary

and the most stupid thing about me, i would get scared if somebody in front of me would really show, how much he/she digs those things. i for myself love those things.
for example, i was so into the video of "pinion" as i saw it for the first time, i was shocked and at the same time totally attracted by it. if somebody would say "hey, how cool is that" i would shrug.

oh i forgot. i love the places trent chose for most videos or promo-shootings. those strange, some of them dark, forgotten, abandoned, lonely places.

so, it's important i think to have artists, who dare to show these things, because we (generally) don't. who can transpose them or transform them in the way so we can "eat" them.
sure, it's a game with the boundaries - how far can you go, how much do you want to see and to know (but that's a very broad discussion). but still it has to be said for being as a mirror for those, who can't tell. there's a distance then through the artistic approach to the things, which could else make (and they do) you crazy.

---

fuck i forgot the sounds.
well, i don't want to convert anybody here, if you don't like something you don't take it/eat it/listen to it. some things are made for other ages, too. you can start to like something later or stop liking it (like no kid would eat bittersweet chocolate and then as a grown up person he/she would love it).
for me it has the right proportions of bitterness, sadness, rage, violence, anarchism, nihilism and then again tenderness and consolation. no compromises.

i'm loosing myself in appreciation : )

i mean, i need these sounds, i don't know if they are distgusting. i don't think they are made to be just disgusting, and that's the point for me in the comparison to many other bands/artists.

I don't in my personal life, but I enjoy seeing it made fascinating through artists' eyes in entertainment; I love it in Clive Barker's work as well. It goes deeper than just glorifying violence, it's playing on what is widely believed to be normal and acceptable. The artist's intent is to take you out of your comfort zone and make you feel something new and not easily digestable. And when it's achieved through such a high level of technical mastery it's hard to find a more stimulating experience. Ofcourse, like others have said, all NIN material doesn't do that and the same goes for Barker.

i love the lyric's of his music...just listen to the words, an the music sound that goes with the lyric's, just blend so well, together...
