What's Next for Trent Reznor?

I apologize if this has been covered already but I've checked the last two pages of this forum and don't see anything on it, though I can't imagine it hasn't already been discussed here.

So Trent is calling NIN, at least as a touring group, quits.

Does this imply he'll still release studio recordings under the "Nine Inch Nails" brand and simply not tour in support of them?

Will he leave the "Nine Inch Nails" name and simply start recording as "Trent Reznor" or some other name?

I would find it hard to believe that an artist could just quit making music altogether cold-turkey.

Perhaps he has ideas for music that just don't fit into the "NIN" brand. NIN music has always been dark and angsty but he finds his life right now very much the opposite. He's not "26 years on my way to hell" anymore. He's 44, sober, happy, soon-to-be-married. His life has changed so I'm sure his feelings and music have as well.

I overheard someone surmising at a show that he wants to be the next "Danny Elfman". Could motion picture scoring be in his future?

I look forward to what TR has to offer in the future.

The whole sound track/sound effects thing with id Software for Doom 3 fell through because of complications with factors outside of Trent's and id Software's control. Now he is free to pursue whatever avenues he wants without record labels getting in the way.

With Doom 4 in the works I would like to see Trent involved in that some how. The leaked Trent Reznor sound pack for Doom 3 makes the game a lot better imo. The Sounds in the original Doom 3 were bland and boring. The work Trent did was great and really adds to the atmosphere.

FEAR and NIN would be pretty cool. If anyone hasn't played that game and enjoys shooting scary ass shit with guns, go ahead and spend a couple nights glued to your monitor. It's an "experience"

Oh and I remember him stating at the Aragon on 8/29 that "the band is not done making music" whatever that means, should be interesting to see what happens in the future.

I assume "FEAR" is a game? I thought you meant the legendary punk band FEAR (who I just saw a few weeks ago) and I thought that's an odd mash-up. Then again after remixing a Puff Daddy song, nothing should surprise me. ;-)

I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with Reznor simply making mood music and sound effects for games. I'm not a gamer.

The comment you mention seems to allude to NIN continuing to make music under the "Nine Inch Nails" monicker (from his mention of "the band" rather than just "I" ), perhaps simply not touring to support the studio efforts.

Yes, possibly because this sub-forum is for discussing nin.com itself.

On that note, there is the question of what purposes the site will end up serving as NIN ends as a touring group. Access seems to have been most oriented towards the environment of live shows-- without them, it's more of a glorified iPhone chatroom. According to the front page popup, the site is still in beta, so I imagine it'll become more extended in time...and then it'll also depend on what comes out of NIN in the future, because this site has been the primary launchpoint for the past two studio releases. We'll see.

(Edit: Oh, okay. Not misplaced anymore.)

Yeah FEAR is a first person shooter. I'm sure he wouldn't just make mood music, thats too simple for him. Of course no one can really say what he would or will do, thats up to the man himself.

I sincerely doubt NIN will ever truly disappear for good, there will always be that surprise appearance at a festival 10 years from now. It would be interesting to see what other sounds he can create that's different enough from NIN to be something else.

I hope they eventually bring back something like the lights in the sky tour (as far as the lighting and set). I've been craving more of those screens ever since.

I would like Trent to have full permanent members for NIN. This tour with Robin, Justin, and Ilan went really well.

I think Trent kind of answered this already in the August 8, 2009 thread:

I've got a number of things lining up to start working on post NIN tour already, including a secret music project outside nine inch nails I'm very excited about. I can't tell you anything about it yet or who's involved but I'll give you a hint: I'm marrying one of the participants.

More soon (maybe).

He hasn't given the specifics yet, but I'm guessing he's going to record and possibly tour in the future with who will then be Mrs. Mariqueen Reznor. I'm wondering if she will sing while he plays guitar and various instruments...maybe a husband and wife band like The Sundays, The Cocteau Twins, Arcade Fire, or Yo La Tengo...it has been successful before. Only time, or Trent, will tell.

1 word--TAPEWORM

I don't understand why everyone's so down on Yoko. She made John happy. I'm sure Q makes Trent happy. Don't we all want him to be happy? I'm assuming that, since Trent thinks Q is pretty special, she probably is.

M&M B....

Mariqueen and MAKIN BABIES! grinning smiley a very happy future riding off on the unicorn...

I think he's takin a break, getin married, startin a family. He'll continue to write the whole time, maybe do some producing...maybe move more into the whole collaborative (I PRAY MAYNARD! HELL YES PLEASE!) thing...I'd like to think he's just gonna chill out and relax for a while, do what he wants for a change and BE happy. Enjoy the fruits of his labors (Like Maynard on the vineyard)

I'm sure it probably isn't the last we'll hear of him/them though...just a hianus, I mean hiatus for now smiling smiley

(GAH I'm so fucking jealous...it's good to be Trent/Maynard right now *sigh* ah hell they've earned it!)

I try to avoid delving into personal life comments and threads, but I agree with this 100%.

Trent + Amanda Palmer
Trent + TV On the Radio
Trent + Mariqueen
Trent + Brian Eno

All mildly possible, all possibly awesome

I thought his plans were to support Mariqueen in her musical career, and most likily collaborating and/or producing other musicians.

He has repeatedly stated that he will not stop making music, but it may be quite a while before we see any more. Perhaps by that time he will be ready to hit the road again. Maybe in 5 years or so.

09/08/09 12:44 PM

Whatever Trent decides on I just hope it makes him happy.

09/08/09 1:38 PM

Mariqueen & The Nine Inch Nails.

He did say the new band are making music collectively...

09/08/09 2:50 PM

I think it's safe to say TR will never fully stop making music. He's just too good at it and it's what his whole life revolves around. As for the time being, I do believe he wants some time to relax after touring for so long, because being on the road can be TOUGH. Although, once he's settled down and possibly gotten married I'm sure he'll be back in the studio working on a couple different projects.

For starters, there is the matter of the upcoming DVD that HAS to be coming out. I mean there was high def recording equipment at a couple concerts amiright?

Next there's Trents collab project with his future wife.

And then the release of NIN's next album! lol The Fall Perhaps?

Hamburgers!

09/08/09 2:58 PM

Trent also stated at the 8/26 show that "they all" and he waved to the band, "were not done making music, so don't kill yourselves yet."

09/08/09 3:04 PM

I think Trent will open up a chain of coffee restaurants called Starfucks.

How would that work though? Would it be under a different name? I know this might sound a bit snobbish, but I don't know how I'd feel if the Nine Inch Nails name wasn't just Trent anymore. It'd feel weird, and I'm not sure if I'd like it...

09/08/09 4:32 PM

I'm hoping for The Horrors with Reznor behind the production
